My renditions of some popular Filipino folk lore characters. From top to bottom and left to right: Kapre, Manananggal, Tikbalang, Aswang, White Lady, Duwende,
Kapre - A giant, dark & hairy man-like creature said to live in big old trees (preferably the Balete tree), often depicted smoking a big cigar. Kapres are said to show themselves to people who wander close to their home trees and territories. Sometimes even striking conversations with unknowing people.
Manananggal - A cursed woman said to have sold her self to evil powers and transforms herself at night time when she pours mystic oil on herself. She is said to grow wings and grotesquely separates her torso from her lower half and flies into the night hunting for wandering people. Is also said to frequent secluded places which have women, children and new born babies which are her main prey.
Tikbalang - A being said to be half horse, half man meaning having the size and head and some limbs of a horse but with the torso of a strong man. They are very tall and often troublesome. They are said to abduct women and children and often fall in love with beautiful, young maidens and are said to even court them to win their hearts. They can also change their appearance to increase their chances of snagging their beloved female prey. And abduct them when they have gained their trust.
Aswang - Probably the most famous of Filipino mythical creatures and also the most feared. They are cursed creatures said to live among humans as humans. Often living secluded lives but also interact with humans when given the chance. They are described as animorphing beings. Able to change into unassuming animals such as dogs, birds and wild pigs. But at night they change into their most fearful forms. Ugly, grotesque and monster-like appearances. They possess superhuman strength and agility. They are stealthy and often hunt for pregnant women and babies. The scariest rumors about them is that they go on to the roofs of homes where pregnant people live and the stick their syringe-like tongues into small crevices on the roofs and stick it into the pregnant prey's stomach and suck the unborn baby into it. Like a mosquito sucking blood from our skin.
White Lady - These beings are a common supernatural being in many parts of the world. Other cultures just have different names for them. In the Philippines they're called just as how they're seen. As white ladies. Often described as woman-like beings with long black hair and wearing white, flowing night gowns. Many say they are spirits of women who suffered agonizing deaths forever looking for justice and often appearing near where they died. Others say they are just evil earth spirits roaming around and causing accidents. They often show up on dark roads and streets to unsuspecting motorist causing tragic accidents.
Duwende - English translation would be "Dwarf" or "Dwarves". They are earth spirits that are small in stature and live in densely vegetated places like forest and old vacant lots. They are said to be harmless beings unless they are disturbed or their territories disrespected. They are said to put magical curses on people who disturb them. Everything from warts to unexplainable illness. But they are also said to bring good luck and fortune to people who befriend them.
Barang or Mambabarang - Also known as Mangkukulam or witch in english. These beings are said to be cursed, evil people. Often female. They put curses on people they are angry at or even just for fun. Their curses are often torture-like and deadly.
I've been seeing lots of crickets around lately. They are one of the few insects that don't give me the creeps and I thought, "Why are there no cricket superheroes?" Probably because the cricket can't do anything much on the cool side. Doesn't climb walls, shoot webs etc. But MAN can those little things JUMP! This guy, The Cricketeer, can jump like a mile when he really has to. He has slightly tougher skin than most humans. About as tough as plywood maybe. Seemed like the right toughness to be in proportion to a carapace. He can also tell what the weather is going to do before it happens...hm, there's his alter ego right there. TV weatherman! I don't know if thats a real ability of the insect but there are rumors about it. And he can produce a loud chirping noise that can stun bad guys. Or annoy coworkers. Whichever is needed. Although, if he did it around his coworkers it would defeat the whole secret identity thing so scratch that. Oh yeah, he can communicate with real crickets.
Maybe some of you remember the body types picture I did some time ago: [link] I decided to redo them as the latter weren't very "varied". So I added some effort to make them more distinguished and this came as a result! Again, the character of my dear "stood as a model"
After unleashing the plagues, Raptor Moses led the Hebrew raptors out of Egypt. When the raptor Pharaoh came for them, Raptor Moses parted the Red sea and led his raptors to the promise land of scrumptious carcasses and rotting entails. Little did they know that it would take four decades before they would complete their journey...
