My rendition of WW2 captain america.

I see him more as "Joe the plumber" superhero right now, more unknown and just a regular lookin' guy other then the fact that hes a super soldier.

Let me know what everyone thinks.

Hetalia © by Hidekaz Himaruya

So this is probably one of the first Hetalia-Fanarts, I ever made.

Russia/Ivan has to go to war with Germany and Austria in 1914, so he and his two sisters bid farewell to each other. It should be historically accurate, since Belarus and Ukraine were parts of the Russian Empire in that time.

I had to think of an alternate clothing for Ukraine, because her farming suit would have been very anachronistic, so I decided for the white Dress^^

I know, that the tsarist flag in the background is not fully accurate, as well as Russia's white uniform, which doesn't really have a typical russian cut, but I hope you can forgive me that.

There is a famous russian march, called "Proshchaniye Slavyanki" (Farewell of Slavianka), written by Wassily Agapkin at the beginning of the 20th century. Since then, it became one of the most famous russian marches and marching songs worldwide.

There are numerous, some times totally different, lyrics from different years. Some are about fighting for the Motherland, some about the glorious russian army and some about parting and remembering.

My friends always scold me that I don't know any classic movies, so over the holidays we sat through five hours of Lawrence of Arabia. Director's cut, yay.... ^^

Here, Germany/Ludwig is shown as a german soldier from the First World War (I hope, his uniform is more or less accurate, they changed multiple times during the war, though).

In short, just what happened:

In summer 1914, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia due to the assassination of archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to it's throne, by a Serb in Bosnia (parts of the Balkan region were occupied by Austria-Hungary). However, Austria-Hungary most likely would not have done this without Germany backing it up, because Russia, in alliance with France, would obviously intervene.

Germany then declared war on Russia and France, too. When Germany invaded neutral Belgium to attack France, Britain, part of the Triple Entente together with France and Russia, declared war on Germany and Austria-Hungary, the central powers.

This fatal chain of alliances and declarations of war lead to the war now known as the Great War or the First World War, which would last until 1918 and cost millions of lifes...

(later on, also the Ottoman Empire, Italy, Bulgaria, Romenia, the countries of the Commonwealth and the british and french colonies, Japan, the US and many other countries and it's people would be involved in the war)

The First World War is often seen as the true end of the 19th century, since a lot changed in the world due to the consequences of the war. The first german republic was declared, the US broke their isolation towards europe, the Soviet Union was founded, etc.

Then, the loss of the Great War would also strengthen radical nationalist fractions in Germany...

WW1 is also perceived as the first modern, industrial war with technologies like heavy artillery, aeroplanes, machine guns, poison gas, tanks, etc., in which the one with with better technology and larger resources of both, material and humans, would win.

There's much, much more about WW1 and it's consequences, but too much to explain all of it here (I'm not a historian, though).

For this pic, I had Germany/Ludwig wear gaiters made of cloth instead of leathern boots and a so called Krätzchen (the round, not peaked cap, he's wearing) instead of a Pickelhaube (spicked helmet) or a steel helmet, like the soldiers in the background.

I tried to have most of the iconic symbols of the First World War in it: gasmasks, infantry charges with bayonet and handgrenade, the first planes used for combat and reconaissance , the effect of heavy artillery, machine guns and, of course, barbed wire, sandbags and the trenches.

Please do not forget about the Western and Eastern Front and all other battlefields throughout Europe, Africa and Asia and all the victims of the First World War. Too much content to have it in one pic, at least, for me.
