When you buy from..."When you buy from an independent artist you are buying more than just a painting or a novel or a song. You are buying hundreds of hours of experimentation and thousands of failures. You are buying days, weeks, months, years of frustration and moments of pure joy. You are buying nights of worry about paying the rent, having enough money to eat, having enough money to feed the children, the birds, …the dog. You aren't just buying a thing - you are buying a piece of heart, part of a soul, a private moment in someone's life. Most importantly, you are buying that artist more time to do something they are truly passionate about; something that makes all of the above worth the fear and doubt; something that puts the life into living." - Rebekah Joy PlettWhen you buy from...2 years ago in Personal More Like This
ABUNAICONIt's come around SO fast, and I feel totally unprepared!!ABUNAICON3 years ago in Personal More Like This
So, Abunaicon is THIS FRIDAY, and I've finally got around to deciding exactly which costumes I'm bringing... though no clue what ones I'm wearing on which days!
- Portal, Experiment 13B
- Avengers, Tony Stark
- L4D2, Ellis
- X-Men, Rogue
I haven't worn Rogue for aaages, but having tried it on again last night, I'm really excited to be wearing this costume again. She is, after all, one of my absolute favourite Marvel characters~
There is a preliminary EuroCosplay round being held at Abunaicon too, so we're expecting to see some awesome costumes at this! As Jenn and I are primarily non-Japanese/Asian origin cosplayers and choose our costumes from outside of this spectrum, we're looking forward to seeing not only some great costumes from animes and manga, but also some fantastic Western-origin costumes too!
Keep an eye on your convention schedules, and come see our panels!

The brilliance of Derpy HoovesAs many of you know in the first season of "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" there was an animation mistake resulting in a background character having googly eyes. Internet fans of the show (bronies) latched on to the character and nick-named her Derpy Hooves. The brilliance of Derpy Hooves3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Since the show has become such a huge internet phenomenon, Hasbro has responded to the appreciation by acknowledging the strange character and inserting her into strange places throughout the second season.
In "Feeling Pinky" she appears as the reason for a number of huge objects dropped from the sky.
In "Luna Eclipse" she appears dressed in a Halloween costume of made of paper bags.
In the Rainbowdash and Fluttershy duet song in "May the Best Pet Win" she creepily peeks her head out of the chicken coop.
In "Sweet and Elite" she appears inconspicuously dressed in her paper bag outfit hidden among fancy ponies during Rarity's musical number.
Hasbro's decision to accept the show's unique internet fame and fanbase is a really am

How to determine what you should charge for your work
In light of the absolutely horrendous commission page DA started up which encourages artists to sell their work for literally pennies, let me talk about pricing artwork. Or more specifically, how I price my work.
This...guide? Advice? Thing? Highlights what I've learned about pricing throughout the last few years. I do not touch on the subject of beginner pricing, simply because there are no set guidelines for that and beginner pricing usually ends up being extremely subjective. This guide assumes that the reader is somewhat experienced in their craft and is looking for pointers on pricing. However I still highly encourage beginners to read! This is what pricing should be like, not mere pennies for hours upon hours of work. This also focuses on crafts and sewing but a lot of it is s

Guide on how to create vector-style rasters (OLD)EDIT - Dec 08, 2013 - This is OLD, like really, really OOOOOOLLLLD and outdated, and there are better methods out there. I don't even do vectors this way anymore. That said, it's still useful as a guide on how to use the pen tool to make shapes specifically for pony vectors in a manner where they're layered efficiently easily modifiable. Just felt the need to point this out as I am still getting messages from people who don't understand that this is old and that I know there are alternative methods. I thank you all for your input.Guide on how to create vector-style rasters (OLD)4 years ago in Personal More Like This
Before I say anything, if you're familiar with proper vectoring at all then once you've heard what I do you'll realize I'm not making "true" vectors with the process I use. This might seem a bit odd because what I do means that if I wanted to make a larger version of the image I would basically have to scale the paths I've made and re-"paint" the whole image, but I'm just doing these for fun so I make them large to begin with; the end re
How To Photograph Your CraftsThe absolute number one cause of rejection of DD suggestions for most Artisan Craft CVs is poor photography. There is nothing worse than seeing an otherwise brilliant piece ruined by a dodgy photo. But even beyond DD acceptance, if you want to people on dA to be able to appreciate your skill you need to be able to show your work off to advantage. How To Photograph Your Crafts2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Sometimes I'll tell a self-suggester that I can't feature their work because of the quality of the photography and they'll inevitably reply, "Oh, I'll have to get a better camera."
Repeat after me: the tools never make the artist.
You don't need a $9000 sewing machine to stitch a dress, you don't need a $1000 stand mixer to bake a cake, and you similarly don't need a top of the range SLR to take a brilliant photograph. It's all in how you take the photo.
To help us understand photography concepts a little more, Fella is going to help us out. Say hi Fella!

Demode Couture (There are so many links I could post that are already compiled and organized beautifully on Kendra VanCleave's site. Absolutely worth your time.) http://demodecouture.com/links/

Wikipedia (surprisingly useful! Great for when you're trying to initially pin down a period.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Western_fashion
For some unadulterated extant dress porn, Tumblr is a fantastic point of reference:

A story about the Scene herd AND a bit about its enemy The Bloody Damned c:
I'm not fully sure about the whole story line yet. On the old breedsheet was a history of the Scenequines
(read it there)
However I kept thinking about the idea of two different girls, stepsisters, dreaming about their perfect horse.
One night, these horses came to life, and took them to a world full of them. Something, like, that. Yeah.
-------------- - - - Storyline - - - ---------------
So, in the comic you'll have the sequel with the breed history. The Scenequines life in a rather normal looking world with rather normal looking animals (except for the Scenequines themselves of course). Its possible that there are humans, but they won't appear.
You'll follow the life of the Scene Herd. Summer Breeze and her problems with leadership, Sex Pistol and his addiction *cough*, Aubree and her hyperactive moments, Rave and his loneliness, Evan making
You want to make plushies? Tips and resources listEdit: added a part about fabric selection before 'where do I start'!You want to make plushies? Tips and resources list2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Ever since I posted Wolf Link and Midna I've been getting an influx of messages asking me to teach, reveal my secrets, take people under my wing, and so on. The sad thing is I can't spend all that much time one on one with everybody asking me to teach them. So I've decided to put together this massive block of text, relating some of my personal experience in plush making and listing off all my resources at the bottom. This will cover the very basics of plush and pattern making so if you are completely new to plush making this is for you, if you're not and you're just looking for resources skip to the bottom. I hope this will be helpful to someone!
First off, the reality. The big secret. The key to becoming a good plush artist is...
I can already feel the glares and exasperation but hear me out first.
One thing I've noticed with a lot of the messages I got were that a lot of people were scared of screwing up.
