New York City-based artist Alex Myung (~alexmyung) has started a Kickstarter project to raise $20,000 to create Arrival, an animated short film with a focus on the theme of coming out. Equalitopia sits down with Alex to discuss the project.
Currently, the project has raised almost $4,000 from 74 different backers, averaging out to about $52 per backer. Keep in mind that Kickstarter projects are “all or nothing,” meaning that if the project doesn’t reach its funding goal by Wednesday, February 20th, no funds will be transferred to the project.
Equalitopia: Could you tell us briefly about the storyline of Arrival?
Alex: Arrival is about a young boy growing up

Each time I visit someone's DA page to write a thank-you for faving, I browse through their gallery. These are some photographs I've collected.

Keeping busy...Thank you for all the kind and helpful responses on my last journal entry regarding copyright infringement woes. A bunch of issues have been put to rest, so that's good news. Thank you, also, for helping me by reporting some of the worst offenders...Alibaba has removed about 80% of the listings (that I know of) that had lifted my images illegally. They were using them to "bait and switch" which is so disgusting, I can't even... :/Keeping busy...1 month ago in Personal More Like This
Aside from all that, I'm keeping myself busy and trying not to get too upset anymore (because it is really monumentally bad for my physical and emotional health). To be proactive, I've started putting big fat obnoxious watermarks on everything. It cuts down drastically on the number of views/shares I used to get. But then, it also probably cuts down on the amount of image and design theft that seems rampant here on DA so...you take the good with the bad I guess. Even if I get less views, I still prefer th

I don't know WHY.
Sooo, I think my mom's gonna let me get ear piercings.
But she said no facial piercings. :/
And I was gonna ask her for a nose piercing.... *sigh*
I think I'm going to ask for an industrial (the bar the goes across your ear...in a way... c: ) and we were talking about a cartiledge and second lobe piercings.
BUT SHE THINKS PIERCING GUNS ARE SAFER.
But she said she won't let me get one with a needle! Wtf is that?!
But it's alright.
I've been playing Persona 3 FES non-stop. Seriously. It's so addictive.
And I think I do have a problem. I keep sniffing out hot guys in video games.
Like the main character. His name is Minato Arisato. Look him up.
If you're a guy, he'll turn you gay.
So anyway, I think I'm gonna try to take better pictures, and I have a few I thought I was going to upload last night (Friday), but I forgot....
So I hope you guys have a bitchin' weekend, and

On pricing your artwork and creating a career...I am going to be speaking at an "Entrepreneurship In The Arts" program later today, and I've been organizing my thoughts. One subject that is certain to come up; "how do you arrive at a fair price for your original artwork?" I have some definite ideas regarding that question. On pricing your artwork and creating a career...1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I was always told that the accepted model for artists and artisans, when it comes to pricing, was double your costs for materials, figure out an hourly price (double that for your retail price if you plan to have wholesale/retail differentials), add it up and there's your item price. I think this model is pure bullshit.
I was also told "charge what the market will bear!" Again, vague bullshit. What if you live in a depressed area? What if you live in a third world country? What if you're at some artist's ally at a little convention and there is a kid sitting next to you selling her character sketches for $5 each?
Here is what I think. There are so many variables when it comes to pricing original art. Yo
NEW FEATURE FOR AUGUST AND SEPTEMBERNEW FEATURE FOR AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER7 months ago in Personal More Like This
This group focuses on encouraging artists.
The monthly feature is late due to my very ancient computer crashing and having to purchase a new one. The artworks appear even more impressive on my new 27" high resolution monitor
I have opened two new folders, one for matte painting and another for announcements.
Our membership is now over 3,000 and our galleries as I always write, contain even more amazing and inspirational art, which is well worth viewing.
The primary focus of this group continues to be digital painting and digital drawing, which should be submitted to the 'Featured 5' folder. This group also accepts and has folders for animation, designs and interfaces, deviantWEAR, pixel art and pixel animation, vector and vexel artworks, comic strips, pages and panels, matte painting, mature content, mixed media, mixed media - 3D, 3D art, commission information, tutorials and resources, announcements and also wallpaper submissions.

Right brain warriors in the new age will be the coveted candidates ordained to lead and guide us; lifting the torch to light the way forward into a brave new beautiful world.
Artists have always feared that they are unappreciated and that the march of progress comes only from business, science and their machines. 1984 was imagined by an artist projecting these exact fears. Our guest essayist suggests the computer will never be our master, but only the super high speed counting machine it was meant to be leaving humans with only one pure task— being creative.

Tortall Comics Project: VOLUME 2!!!Hey everyone!Tortall Comics Project: VOLUME 2!!!4 months ago in Personal More Like This
It's been a loooong time Anyway we have a huge announcement to make... after messaging Tamora Pierce some weeks ago for her permission to make a SECOND Tortall Comics Project anthology book, we finally have her answer, and it's a thrilling "YES"!! This is extremely exciting, as when we made the first fan anthology, we had no idea that it would become so beloved by fans on deviantART as well as Tumblr, and elsewhere! Now that we have a bigger fanbase and reach, we'd like to ask for your help... we'd like more artists who are fans of Tammy's signing up on deviantART and contributing to the second volume! So please spread the word!
This journal entry is also to announce the change in administrator positions! I'm stepping down from the role of Director of the TCP in order to make way for the fabulous Queen-Obsessed! >v

There is no cosmic law that states artists must suffer many long years and demeaning day-jobs before a window of opportunity cracks open just enough to hop on through.
Fellow deviant Brian Kesinger is a case in point.
His first “day-job” in 1996—he was hired straight out of his senior year of high school—was drawing Tarzan for Disney.
Brian stayed at Disney and he considers every day there a part of his ongoing education as an artist. He most recently worked on “Wreck It Ralph,” and has become active in the story department, where he dreams up fresh narratives and new characters with fellow Story Artists and Disney directors.
But more and more, he is being recognized for his own style and own creations

Las Vegas deviantMEET Wrap-Up!Las Vegas deviantMEET Wrap-Up!3 months ago in DeviantART Announcements More Like This
Our first-ever deviantMEET in Las Vegas hit the jackpot!
On Sunday, December 1st, deviants were already lined up outside the doors at 5:00 PM, even though the event wasn't scheduled to start until 5:30! (A handful of amazingly dedicated super deviants arrived as early as 3:30 PM!) Far be it for us to wait to get the party started, so we opened the doors a little early, allowing the crowd to rush in. After signing our guestbook – we know, physical guestbooks are so Web 1.0, but they're great mementos! – our devious artists dispersed to play at the deviantART booth.
Stocked with six Intuos 5 Wacom tablets to play with, a 24-inch Cintiq, SketchBook Pro for sketching and painting, enough table seating for traditional drawing and portfolio review, and bags upon bags of free swag (including stress balls, deviantART Sharpies, and tons of free stickers), everyone found an awesome and creative way to spend their time.
