this is my final say in the argument against natural born talent vs skill. we all start out by drawing scribbles that slightly resemble things. i was about 3 yrs old here., and had probably already been drawing for some time since i was brought up in a family of artists. drawing only gives back with the time we give to it, and it takes a lot of patience, more needed in the beginning, and a lot of determination to keep at it even though we are continually frustrated.
hope this inspires some of you to keep going, or some of you to start, it will be even better if more of you, my dA friends, stop making excuses saying you werent born with the ability to make your dreams come true. the only thing holding you back is yourself. drawing is but a skill which we learn through lots of practice, determination, observation and patience. if you also have the undenied passion for it, you may see yourself getting further than others.
it also helps if you're able to be ho
How I Got Started...A journal entry from a friend prompted me to think about my beginnings as a mask maker. When I started making masks about 25 years ago (wow!) it was totally on a whim. I was born drawing. My fantasy art, when I was a kid, was pretty standard stuff (dragons, unicorns, things with wings) but I always had a good sense of design and color. I'd been dabbing in leather art...doing tooling on archery bracers and things of that nature. Nothing particularly spectacular or uncommon really but it ~was~ a good thing that I concentrated on tooling and carving first because I perfected my technique in that respect long before the masks happened. How I Got Started...2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Back then, NO ONE made masks out of heavy leather with detailed tooling. It just wasn't done. Masks of leather were either thick and plain or thin and swirly/curly in the Venetian style. People used molds for the thick masks, and molds press and mar carving. People used their hands shaping the thin leather, but obviously the thin leather wasn't suitabl

I have a job now: Working as an aftercare aid for the YMCA 3hrs a day. Kids...yeesh
I have a personal blog now: dCTb.tumblr.com I blog things that inspire what I draw (among other things that I wouldn't put up on my art blog like work by others and things I'm a fan of)
I have been active mostly on twitter: So go ahead and follow me dCTb_
I have been in and out of doctor appointments: And they've been going smoothly thanks to the sketch commissions so thank you for those! I still have a bunch to get done.
Made it to the semi-finals! Thanks for the words of support and I'm glad a lot of you liked the piece!

Tip of the Day: Dealing with StressStress is the root for many health problems. It's not necessary. Just do what you need to do. Stop stressing.Tip of the Day: Dealing with Stress3 years ago in Personal More Like This
In high pressure situations if I start stressing I will think what is the worst that could happen and how could I bounce back from that. Once I see that I would still be ok and be able to come back from that difficulty... then the stress disappears. Then I start imagining what would it feel like to be successful and that gets me excited to continue towards my goals.
Stress is something that everyone deals with in their own ways but if you don't have an effective way to deal with it, feel free to try my method.
Repetition is RepetitiousRepetition is great for practice.Repetition is Repetitious2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Repetition is great for learning.
Repetition teaches patience.
Repetition teaches devotion.
Repetition is comfortable.
But repetition is repetitious.
Don't people get tired of doing roughly the same things over and over again?
Don't people get tired of seeing roughly the same things over and over again?
Tired of repeating the same techniques.
Tired of repeating the same concepts.
Need to improve.
Need to innovate.
Art is not my job.
Art is my mental exercise.
And I am mentally underfit.
So it's time to get back into shape.
Upcoming ContestI finally decided to host my first contest. Self Portrait Challenge!Ok, so this is kinda linking back with something I thought about doing aages ago. But the main idea came from talking with some of you lovely people and the comments from this journal here: http://fav.me/d61xe9iSelf Portrait Challenge!2 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
The power of self-perception, and the confidence (or lack thereof) you gain from it, does affect how you act and the choices you make in your life. And no I'm not talking about the whole "you are beautiful" thing so much as, how you see and percieve yourself. How we see ourselves is completely different to how other people see us.
I do notice this a lot, being a stock artist and having lots of artists draw me. One was worried that I'd be offended that he drew my legs a little large or something like that. Hell, doesn't bother me. Draw me as you see me, as how you percieve me, as how you want your art to turn out. The rest is superfluous really, since I play a character in my stock sets and none of them are really set as a piece to show me as well, me.
So that's my idea. Kinda l

:bulletbkac: Forwards and Thank You's! [Bullet; Black]
Alright so we know that everyone usually just skims right past this part to see the winning entries, but I still want to start off with this because some thank you's are in order! Going through the entries this year was incredibly difficult (It usually always is!) because there were so many unique concepts and beautiful art pieces. After a certain point I had to enlist the help of my mom and sister, who managed to help me narrow down things a bit more. That having been said, there were a lot of last minute decisions that I had to make alone and I really focused on the execution of the concept and all of the little details.

My holidays are coming up in 2 weeks and I will have 2 weeks to draw (Horray for holidays! :icononioncheer1plz before I die in school again. :iconcryforeverplz:
I'm only writing this now because I won't have time to write this in those 2 weeks before those holidays because I have exams during that time. I want to get everything sorted before the last week of school (have the most exams that week) so I have an idea how many drawings I need to do.
Anyways, I have decided to open up 5 slots for requests. You can request anything (see my commission page for information on what I do and don't do http://fav.me/d5ajdcr).
I know I have a lot of drawings to do but seriously 2 weeks of nothing (only because I don't want to study) should give me enough time. These requests will be done after I finish my point commissions as well as the free commission prizes from my giveaway and of course, after I draw my dear friend :iconTheLostWonder: her drawing I
