Before starting to make a UST/VSQ, it's best to have the following music knowledge:
-The ability to identify the notes of the piano
-The ability to identify the pitch of the singing (which follows the point mentioned above)
-The ability to identify the tempo (speed) and time signature (beats per measure) of the song(s)
If you have a keyboard or a piano, you can play the notes, look at where the keys are, and memorize them or just label them until you memorize which key plays which note.
