RIP JOE KUBERTToday is a very sad day for me, and many other "Kubies."RIP JOE KUBERT1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I had just sat down for dinner when I received a phone call from my good friend John Trumbull, who let me know that he'd just read that comic book legend, Joe Kubert has passed away. At this time, I don't have any details, but as a former student of the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art, I can't say just how this news stunned me.
Joe was a mega-talent in the comic book industry. He did everything there was to do and wore every hat there was to wear in the business--editor, writer, penciller, inker--he did it all. He won Eisner and Harvey Awards, National Cartoonist Society Awards, and even the Alley Award for his work. He is best known for his work on characters like HAWKMAN, TARZAN, and my favorite, SGT. ROCK.
He started up the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art (now just called The Kubert School) with his wife Muriel in 1976. Many great artists honed their skills in the little town of Dover, NJ under Joe an

As a community, we seem to be having more and more notes and birthdays to cover! We're very happy about this! We love all the new members we receive! What this means, however, is we are once again looking to expand the team! The method has change slightly so be sure to read through carefully!

How active are you on dA? Are you on the site nearly every day? We need someone that is around quite often. To begin with at least, you will only be responsible for one day of the week; however, you may be needed to cover other team members if they cannot do their day due to feeling unwell, going away, and so on.
Also, how involved are you within the dA community? We're ideally looking for someone that has a passion for the community and likes to get involved.
Personality matters. You will need to have a good attitude towards deviants you interact with. A friendly and helpful nature is a must. You also need

I'm looking for 100 new "likes" on Heads Up Studios Facebook page. I thought this contest might be a fun way to get them.
Here are the rules. PLEASE READ THE RULES. PLEASE FOLLOW THE RULES.
*The first ten people from deviantArt who "like" Heads Up Studios on Facebook that have NOT already done so AND leave me a message there, get to request a character from me! Please post your request HERE on this journal and NOT on Facebook.
*I've picked a number between 1 and 100. The person "liking" Heads Up Studios that corresponds to that number gets a free copy of my second book, "Pizza, Porn and Santa Claus". So just because you're not in the top 10 or you've already "liked" Heads Up Studios, you still have a chance to win!

We Love Artists' Alley
We're back at Comic-Con!
Last year, our sponsorship of Artists' Alley was a huge success. We were able to provide a more comfortable environment for the artists, display their art on huge screens over the Alley, and let people attending the convention draw with deviantART muro on fantastic digital screens. We plan to do this and more in 2012 as we take on the great pleasure of sponsoring Artists' Alley at San Diego Comic-C

Before we get into the thick of things, we didn’t have a photo of our huge plasma screens hanging from the convention ceiling to share in our Day 1 recap, so we vowed to get that to you today! The 11 foot wide screens stream amazing works of art from Artists' Alley participants to the whole convention floor!
In Comic-Cons past, the foot traffic In Artists’ Alley got busier and busier as the week progressed, and this year is no exception. There’s something magical about speaking one-on-one with a deviant, learning their experiences, hearing how they started as an artist, and how far they’ve come. It’s an emotional connection to make with someone who was practically a stranger a few moments ago -- and then you realize you’re not really strangers when you

Alternate RealityHello Fellow Deviants!Alternate Reality1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Every couple of years I manage to crawl out of my dungeon and rejoin the public world for a few hours. This time around the outing was very special as I visited one of my favorite local Las Vegas comic shops. Alternate Reality Comics hosted a lovely reception for me as the feature artist of their October 2012 Artist Spotlight.

If Comic Oasis is my home away from home, then Alternate Reality is my home away from my home away from home.
Neither of which I visit often enough.
Why The Hate?Just received an email tonight through my Heads Up Studios website which reads, "Wow, my kid can draw better than this! Is this the limit of your ability? As a real artist, I would be humiliated to have anyone look at my art if this was my art." The person left no name and no email. I'm not going to run to my room crying about it, but it's left me a bit steamed as to why the hate? I didn't force my website on this person. If it wasn't their cup of tea, then move on. To take the time to fill out a false name (What a joke artwork) and false email (firstname.lastname@example.org) and then to leave such a comment is irritating and confusing. I walk through artist alleys and see art I don't care for, but I'd never make it a point to go over and tell them personally. I respect the individual doing the art, even though I may not care for it.Why The Hate?1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Anonymity on the internet breeds this sort of action, and speaks to the true nature of the individual.
An Important UpdateSome of you may be wondering why the newest strip is titled "JL8 #67."An Important Update1 year ago in Personal More Like This
The title "Little League" actually infringes on existing trademark, and I've been asked to re-title the strip, which I'm doing. It is now going to be titled "JL8." That being said, I have until Aug. 31st to also change the name of the Facebook and Tumblr pages. Fortunately, Tumblr allows a pretty easy switch, but I'll also have to change the URL. This is important because I know a lot of my readers have the current page bookmarked. On Sept. 1, that bookmark will no longer work, as the original page won't exist. If you'd all be so kind as to bookmark the URL:
That will be where the site is hosted beginning Sept. 1. I plan on reminding everyone with each update leading up to that date, but I recommend just bookmarking it now. There's nothing there yet, but next Thursday this page will pop up there.
As for the Facebook page, I've begun transitioning fans away from the current "Little League"
Reflections on Comic ConNow that I am a week back from Comic Con, it is time for some not so poignant reflections. This year marked my 26th straight Comic Con. It all started for me back in 1987 as a fan when the show was just a really big Comic Book Show. Now as well all know, it is a multi-media extravaganza with a 120,000 attendees. Is it too big? Yes. A friend of mine waited 7 hours to get into the Game of Thrones panel and did not get in!Reflections on Comic Con1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Back in the day (ahem) if I wanted to go to the costume contest, I would just go get in line on Saturday night and walk on in. Not anymore. On Friday night a very long train rolled on by the convention center just as we were getting out of the show and we waited 20 minutes to get across the street to go to our hotel. The train stopped the thousands or people who were already bottle-necked to begin with!
As with the past in recent years, I had to go in ear

"Cut it to time"In some Green Lantern: The Animated Series forums (okay, namely at the one over at Toonzone.net) some astute viewers have noticed missing scenes when comparing the episode that aired on 11-11-11 versus the version screened at NY comic con."Cut it to time"2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Here's my side of the story:
The version we screened at NY comic con was meant to be the final version of the show. What we didn't realize was that in order to fit the DC nation format, we'd have to cut additional time from both episodes. So, back to the editing room we went to make some tough calls.
Yes, M'ten's hand used to writhe in pain before cutting away to his "death scene". And yes, Hal used to foreshadow his ring running out of energy by admitting to Carol he always forgets to charge his cell phone. I was bummed to lose these shots, but as I said before, something had to go. In fact, a lot of people didn't notice that we sped up some of the action scenes to make them mo

Yes, YOUNG JUSTICE fans, the sad news is now official. This very popular show will -- Reach-- its abrupt and premature end with the conclusion of Season Two. It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the reports. Of course, none of us was able to say anything about it since last year. It was a very fun ride. As for the reasons behind the cancellation, I can only say that it was beyond the control of WB Animation, and that the decision was made by the powers at Cartoon Network (bless 'em). On behalf of the producers, and the rest of our dedicated crew at YOUNG JUSTICE, I would like to express our deepest gratitude to all the loyal fans who supported us, who shared the dream with us, and who will continue to love the YOUNG JUSTICE universe

At least 12 people were murdered, and many more were wounded; some of them are in critical condition.
If you are a spiritual person, please say a prayer for the dead, the dying, and those living touched by this tragedy.
If you are not a spiritual person, any happy thoughts or kind gestures would surely be appreciated.
Please refrain from any speculation, politicization, rumor-mongering, conclusion-jumping, finger-pointing, and other similarly inappropriate behavior for just a little while, if possible. It hasn't even been 12 hours since the tragedy took place, and that sort of unproductive demagoguery is already being handled nicely by the 24-hour news venues.
Real tragedies like this happen, all over the world, and our responsibility to our fellow man is to render aid & support, be it large or small, in times of crisis.
