Something all Paint Tool SAI users need to knowPLEASE NOTE: This will only work for people who have tablets. This SAI tip will not work with mouses or touch pads.Something all Paint Tool SAI users need to know3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Ok so I just feel like I really need to point this out since a ton of people have no clue that you can do this in SAI. xD and it's really important when it comes to lineart.
Ever heard of the stabilizer/smoothing option? For those who haven't, it's an option in SAI where you can set it to a certain number (the scale is from 0 through S-7, 0 being the fastest and most unstable cursor speed). Here's a picture of it for people who can't find where it is in the program: http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg23/scaled.php?server=23&filename=fullscreencapture442009.jpg&res=medium
The farther down the scale you go, the slower the cursor will move, making your lines MUCH smoother. I usually have mine set to S-5 during lineart, and at about 10 - 15 when doing sketching.
Anyway, just pointing that out. :3 Hope it helps some people.

When good comics go bad
Though the comic's general storyline has been worked out well in advance, the plan is a rough one and things can and do change quite a lot when we get down to writing individual pages.
Here's an example:
Shortly after starting work on Book 4 I had a sudden nasty realization that the events we had planned weren't going to work out in the order we'd intended them. In fact, it seemed very much like an entire story arc and a new character were not going to fit with what we needed to do, and it was an arc and character we'd both been looking forward to.
We discussed it and found out we both felt the same way: the arc would have to be scrapped.

There was a crisp chill in the air as fine powdery snow drifted down, casting a white canvas along the ground as it settled. The sky was billowing with gray winter clouds, the ivory moon slipping through from behind the aerosols and casting a glow unto the night. The members of all three fractions made their way to the warm confines of the Lune. The women were clothed in an array of dazzling colors and shimmering gowns while the men were attired in sleek tuxedos. As they pushed open the heavy double doors of the banquet hall, they were welcomed into a winter wonderland that rivaled the beauty of the natural world outside. Along the walls, strings of clear lights glimmered like stars in a galaxy. Their illumination bounced off the floor-to-ceiling glass panes that lined the walls. Along one side of the room were several dozen tables veiled in ebony colored coverings. A reflecting black dance floor highlighted the gaudy crystal chandeliers above. The orchestra broke the silence w

PE: Literature Basics SettingsLiterature Basics WeekPE: Literature Basics Settings1 year ago in Literature Features More Like This
Along with characters and plot, setting is one of the most important choices we make when we write. In the most basic terms, setting is where your literary work takes place. It's up to you, as the author, to use it and mold it to fit the needs of your writing, make it more than just a backdrop to your prose or poetry.
A good setting becomes like a character itself. It can be express moods, offer comfort or hindrance. The setting can even be the main antagonist - consider the Overlook Hotel in Stephen King's The Shining, or the island in the 2000 Tom Hanks' film, Cast Away. In both of these examples, the protagonist(s) have to survive their surroundings, one mundane, the other ... less so.
Make Your Setting Work For You
Everything in your written work must be chosen for maximum effect. When deciding on your setting, decide what you want to accomplish with it. Here are some possibilities.

I made a tutorial based on the process from the gator dragon I posted yesterday. It covers a technique to make it easier than ever to paint complex scales and patterns without screwing up your values and lighting. Not only do you get a 1 hour and 40 minute fully narrated 1080p video, but it comes with other goodies like brushes and a psd of the image. All of that for only $3. If you guys like it let me know and maybe I'll make more tutorials on other subjects. Go check it out here and here for paypal customers.

Do I need a special program?
No! Something as simple as Microsoft Paint, Paint Shop Pro or the Gimp, all of which are free, are all you need to start with pixel art. Well, that and a mouse/touchpad (and a computer ). Photoshop can be used to pixel as well, but it is costly, so unless you plan to use Photoshop for a multitude of digital media, it isn't the best investment for pixel art.
Free downloads of MS Paint and Paint Shop Pro can be found here: http://www.bunnystick.com/tdlc.html
What are some useful Pixel techniques?

Commission - Approach and Pricing GuideDo you do commission work? Do you have trouble to get customers in order to buy commissions from you? Or Are you in a dilemma to set your own "competitive" commission price?Commission - Approach and Pricing Guide2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
If your answer is "yes" to any of the above questions then you are at the right place! Today, I'll tell you (or at least give you a better idea) how to start up with your commission work and setting up the right price.
A little introduction about myself: I am a hobby-driven artist who mainly deals with CSS coding and graphics designing (now) in deviantART. As a profession I am currently employed as an online marketing professional who looks after two leading online gaming brands. I like to help people customize their pages and support them to be a better artist in deviantART.
Having given my short introduction let us first understand that why most of us face a lot of trouble to get commission work or worst, to set up the "right" price for their service.

Financial Resources Available to ArtistsFrom time to time around dA you may see your fellow deviants faced with unplanned or unforeseen financial crises write journals asking for donations. One of the great things about dA is that the majority of the collective community here is comprised of like-minded individuals and we are all greatly aware of the financial burdens that we as creatives may face from time to time.Financial Resources Available to Artists1 year ago in Deviant Events More Like This
When the need is urgent or if your profession is being threatened because of a catastrophe, you may need more funding than what can be raised through dA. In such a circumstance, it would be in your best interest to seek out emergency funding through a grant. Please note that some of these grants cannot be funded to hobbyists, students, or self taught artists.

How To Generate Random Terrain Using Photoshop
With the success of The Authors Guide To Drawing Maps a few people asked for a more detailed article on techniques for drawing the map. So I've taken the map style from "Elfcarron" and built the tutorial around drawing that style of map.
This article is Part 1 on how to draw maps using nothing but Photoshop. The other parts will be published over the coming weeks.
I hope you enjoy.

How To Improve Your ArtI was going to call this 'how to become a better artist', but then I realized, there is no such thing as a 'better artist'. If you are an artist, you are the best artist you can be - your art can always ALWAYS improve, but you are already and always will be the best artist you can be. Remembering those two facts is the most important thing you can do.How To Improve Your Art4 years ago in Art Features More Like This
But other than that, find someone to be excited about art with! They don't have to be an artist themselves, they just have to be able to get excited about art. Having someone who'll always be around to listen to your ideas, even if they don't contribute anything, is HUGELY helpful to keep you motivated. I've found that having someone for me to bounce ideas off of, or even just someone to explain my stories to, is my favourite thing in the world and almost always leads to me discovering new things about my stories and characters.
And now for the list of links you all were waiting for!
