Editorial | Khader Adnan: His dignity. Our shame.
This week, Khader Adnan entered his third month of a hunger strike
against his unlawful detention and mistreatment at the hands of the Israeli military.
The deafening silence by world leaders and media at his plight shames us all.

Palestinians protest in solidarity with Khader Adnan
Somewhere in the Middle East, a 33-year old man is today entering the 60th day of a hunger strike.
He is currently lying as he has done for weeks with one hand, and one leg,
shackled to his hospital bed. By the time you read this, he could be dead.
Of course, had he been an Iranian opposition journalist,

Thanks for all the notes, comments, confection icons, incredibly awesome art , and general well-wishery. :]
Especially considering I, as usual, have been all but completely dead around these parts. Haha, it kills me every time I swing around with a few buckets of art to toss up here on dA, and every time I get a slew of comments of people that seem so happy to see that I am back, and actively submitting work. And I don't mean 'kills me' in the hilarious sense, I mean more, well, I honestly feel bad that I can't BE more active around here. As active as I used to be, anyway. When free time was much more in abundance.
I always gave off the impression I was really busy with day-to-day things, but I think it helps to know what's ACTUALLY up. SO! I think it's time to spill a bit about life! HUNKER DOWN. If any of you have been her

PE - The Beef with BasesWelcome to the Beef with Bases article. This may get a little controversial, so put on your heavy duty hats!PE - The Beef with Bases2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
By now, we should all know what a base is. But just for a refresher - A base is a bald, naked figure for people to 'doll' clothes onto. Lately, more people have been making animal bases as well. Some argue that since they can't be dressed up, they aren't proper bases. But a base is a vague term to begin with.
Why do so many people make bases? What's the allure? Many people just start doodling and end up with a body they don't plan on finishing. So why let it go to waste? They fix it up a bit and let other people use it, so maybe others will find inspiration where theirs left off. Other times people are inspired by a pose, and want to practice their anatomy and draw the body. Sometimes people even have an idea in mind - say... a big set of mermaid poses! And more frequently, people see a piece of art t
A little opinion...About the frontage thing... I think more than change the "popular" system, a new options set for the frontage are needed. This is not because I could be somewhat affected by the change, my pics keep appearing in FrontPage and the watchers are still following my work (and I thank you so much for that ) but because I saw a lot of people misplacing art and taking advantage of the new system, helping even more to create the odd idea of a popularity "goal/prize". I like the idea of the popular frontage because it works pretty much like a musical ranking and it was a tool to know public´s preferences: wich kind of concepts/ideas/colors/styles works better and like a test to know the effect of a specific work. Somewhat of democratic voice, that helps to know to the public a bit more.A little opinion...3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Before you ask, NO, I don't think that the goal of an artist is to be popular and I don't think that "popular=better" I saw both as different parameters that sometimes goes hand by hand and sometimes runs

Chinese New Year Art Contest! In just a few short weeks The Lunar New Year a.k.a Chinese New Year, will be upon us! It's the Year of the Dragon!
To celebrate, 4th Dimension Entertainment will be holding its 1st ever Chinese New Year Art Contest!
The theme of this contest is: The Year of the Dragon!
It is a pretty broad theme because dragons are awesome, and we want contestants to have a lot of choices in how they work with the concept!
The rules are simple: Create an original piece of art.
You must incorporate art, characters, symbols, and/or imagery from one or more of the following 4th Dimension Entertainment series:

Leonardo da Vinci's Anatomical DrawingsIf getting your gear together and heading out for an evening of life drawing sounds like more trouble than it's worth, consider what Leonardo da Vinci endured for the sake of educating his own singular vision.Leonardo da Vinci's Anatomical Drawings2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Rumors of da Vinci resorting to grave robbery persist to this day, but the truth is that he was allowed to dissect and study corpses at the Hospital of Santa Maria Nuova in Florence.
Leonardo da Vinci's studies of the human skull in 1489 borrowed three-dimensional drawing techniques from architecture that had never been seen applied to anatomical studies before. A new technical vocabulary for anatomical drawings was created and da Vinci's sketches in plan, section, elevation, and perspective marked a massive progression in how the body was documented.
Criticized for his undertaking, Leonardo passionately defended the purpos

1) Despite masquerading behind a veil of this 'innocent' self-described "quirkiness" it's actually pretty haughty and pretentious when looked at from another angle.
2) It reeks of blatant and unabashed special snowflakism (almost in the same vein as those other posts with, "i would rather prefer to stay online and being a fanboy/fangirl than doin drugs or havin sex and party liek most kidz my age reblargh if u agree").
Actually, the entire mentality reeks of this really distorted idea that one can't be a partier or drinker/smoker and simultaneously be a frequent internet user or enjoy "nerdy" or "geeky" pursuits as well. Do you honestly think, given this day and age and how widespread and necessary computers have become, that you're the only one "addic

Sins of an ArtistI've been under fire recently for having the audacity to admit publicly that improving my art has never been, and never was, an ultimate goal of mine. Apparently that's like committing some sort of mortal sin in the art community. I've had trouble expressing myself about it too, because brushing off improvement for improvement sake makes me look like I'm uncaring, egocentric, and stubborn. But after a recent post I was given much more clarity in understanding the issue and I wanted to share my thoughts with you.Sins of an Artist2 years ago in Personal More Like This
In the recent exchange I was basically told this: "If doing what you love isn't about dedicating your life to improving your art, you aren't an artist."
Maybe I'm old fashioned, but making art has never been solely about the technical expertise. Even in college, outside the handful of foundation courses you take in freshman year, perfection of the craft is often secondary to concepts and ideas and your ability to evoke feelings and emotions in your audience.

Whilst sipping a cup of tea and pondering what to write for my next journal, I remembered something that happened to me a few weeks ago. I was at a local nature reserve, photographing the beautiful bushland and exploring the landscape - when I noticed some people bush-walking a few meters away. Without thinking, I snapped away and thought they added a very interesting element to my photos, enjoying the peacefulness just like me.
A few minutes later, a man noticed what I was doing and came over to me in a gruff, and asked me why I was taking his photo! At first I was stunned into silence, but then I smiled warmly and told him that I thought the landscape looked so amazing, and capturing people enjoying it was just purely incidental. I felt like I was almost bracing myself for his angry response, but his face softened and he asked me if he could see the photos. Of course I flicked through my camera to show him, and quite obviously you couldn't see any of th
Easy bokeh tutorial! After writing a surprisingly successful journal entry a few days ago, I've decided I'll be trying to update this as much as possible - thanks for all the support everyone! You're amazing!Easy bokeh tutorial!2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
There are so many more topics in photography I think people would find very useful. Years ago, when I first started dabbling in photography, I was always so fascinated by the 'bokeh' effect in backgrounds, and often attempted to get the same effect but to no avail. What was I doing wrong? I had a good Canon slr and a kit lens of 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 - shouldn't that be enough? WRONG! I started again from scratch, researched every possible tutorial existed on the web... I realized I was doing all the wrong things!
How to create beautiful Bokeh
1. Large aperture works best, so use a low f-stop number like f1.4, f1.8 or f2.8.
2. The best lens I ever bought was the Canon 50mm f/1.8, creating soft beautiful bokeh light in the background. I remember I only paid around $100 for it, so it reall
bullyingEdit09-11-2011: since you brought so much attention to this journal let me add something from myself:bullying3 years ago in Personal More Like This
If you have ever been bullied, please don't keep the hurt, the rage, the bad feeling inside of you. TALK TO SOMEBODY! Tell them what happened. Share how you feel, it will help you find a way, it will help you realize you're not alone. No matter how ashamed you are, no matter what you think that people may say about it.
I know from expirience that victims always feel like they are the guilty ones and they shut up about it. But just share it with somebody, even if it's a friend over the internet, even if its on your facebook wall. The more you keep it inside, the more it grows, so set it free. And keep going with life, no matter how hard it is. One step at a time.
"A teacher in New York was teaching her class about bullying and gave them the following exercise to perform. She had the children take out a piece of paper and told them to crumple it up, stomp on it and really mess it up, not

So Ive been back home from University for a couple of weeks now, and its going alright. There are some things that are a bit stressful, but overall its not too bad, and Ive had fun just doing loads of art work. Im going to be forking out about £200 for buying some materials this week, so if anyone want to buy anything, that would be SUPER great. I am so poor right now its unreal XD
Now theres a couple of things I would love a bit of advice on, if anyone can help me. Firstly, can anyone recommend a good paint varnish? At the moment, Im using Humbrol Matt and Gloss cote varnish, and it works great, but sometime it just wont dry properly, and stays sticky. Can anyone advise on a better one to use? Its really bugging me :L

In the news this week there has been a spotlight on Karren Brady, a photographer who has won a copyright ruling. The news article itself is interesting but the cautions that it turfs up for the future and current generations of photographers are slightly more concerning. The general feeling that has started to develop is that if you have assistance with setting up a shot, making a scene, posing a model and making up a person for example, those people may well have rights to your work. This is also being debated with regards to post-production and if you get somebody else to edit your work. What are your thoughts on this? And when attributing this to the deviantART community, what
