'Why was my colored pencil drawing rejected?'Hey peeps,'Why was my colored pencil drawing rejected?'3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Hope you're having an awesome holiday season so far.
I'm going to take a minute or two to address something that gets a lot of otherwise fine pictures rejected from the group. I'm not even exaggerating when I say that I've rejected more drawings for this reason then for all other possible reasons combined and I really do feel bad for having to reject so many for this reason.
Now, when you submit art to this group, it doesn't have to be perfect... I can't speak for the other mod, but I can let a lot slide. However, one thing that I look for of the cleanliness of the picture. Does the coloring look neat and tidy or does it just look like a rushed job?
Unfortunately when it comes to submissions colored with colored pencils, we get a good number of them that do not fall into the "clean and neat" category and just looks like quick, choppy strokes (with a lot of white spots) rather then a smooth buildup of color.
I know that colored pencil is a medium that a lot of new artis
John Bauer and his trollsJohn Bauer's life was very short and very sad. Despite this, he left behind many illustrations that later became inspiration for loads of later artists, like Arthur Rackham, Sulamith Wülfing or Kay Nielsen. 36 gloomy years
Born in 1882 in Jönköping, Sweden, he grew up with two brothers and a sister, Anna, who died very early, at the age of 13, which badly effected John and his brothers and left visible marks in their minds for the rest of their lives. Their father used to own a charcuterie and the apartment they lived in was located above the shop.
He started sketching very early in his childhood, although there is no formal date known. In 1898, when young Bauer was 16, he moved to Stockholm to study art and two years
The Faving spam counter-measuresThe weekend before Memorial Day was an interesting one.The Faving spam counter-measures3 years ago in Personal More Like This
The TL;DR version:A user was banned permanently for running an automated script against the site, faving the universe & more. That kind of mass-faving just to draw attention to themselves provides zero value to the community and causes issues on the site.To curb that behaviour, faving was put under the guard of the same anti-spam filter used throughout the site. For a more detailed rundown of what happened, including information about the filtering that was implemented, you’ll have to read through the post.
At around 6am PST on Sunday, the dT team discovered an increasing amount of database issues affecting one of our servers which stores deviant data (deviations, favourites). On deviantART, all of the user-generated data is spread evenly across a number of servers, so seeing only one of them affected by unusually high load to the point of causing issues raised some eyebrows, especially considering 6am on
Dreamy Theodor KittelsenAs I've previously promised, after the articles about Sulamith Wülfing and about John Bauer, the time comes for an article about Theodor Kittelsen.Dreamy Theodor Kittelsen2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
...Theodor Severin Kittelsen, being a great representant of the Golden Age of Illustration, is one of the countless artists who received more attention and appreciation a long time after their death. I don't say "proper attention", it's still far from it.
His depictions of Scandinavian folklore creatures are said to be equally cannon to the trolls portrayed by the definitely more famous John Bauer. But, unlike Bauer, Kittelsen didn't focus just around trolls (which are, you must admit that, most of Bauer's creations - although his sudden death at young age is
ImprovementOver the years, many people have asked me for how long I've been drawing. While it's true that I started drawing as soon as I was able to hold a pencil, I was never that serious about it. In a sense, you can ask yourself if I was any serious on art altogether. Because, in the end, all kids draw. I think most people can remember making drawings in grade school. Because it's something kids do naturally. Depicting the world around them with images. The beautiful thing is that kids have no fear. They just draw whatever they like, and are usually happy with it. It isn't until the age of 10 or 12, that the outside world suddenly expects you to be either good at something, or stop doing it. It's at that age that we become self cautious about drawing. And therefore it's around that age many kids eventually stop drawing.Improvement7 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
I came to that age as well. I have to admit... it kicked in a little late on me.
For those that wonder what I'm talking about; those are the 2 years I stopped

In loving memory of our dear GiorgioDear members,In loving memory of our dear Giorgio2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Some of you may already know it, our dear Giorgio, known on deviantart as
left us on February 26th and went hiking heaven's mountains.
Giorgio was one of the kindest person I've had the honour of meeting on this site, and I'm sure everyone else who knew him on here would say the same. He was a member of Mountainshots for many many years, and a devoted admin of this group for a very long time too.
In loving memory of him, I'd like to share some of his beautiful mountains pictures. Be happy and have an endless peaceful time up there, my friend
