Free adviceSomeone recently asked me for some advice about going to art college and becoming an illustrator. Here's what I said. Maybe someone here will find this interesting too...Free advice3 years ago in Personal More Like This
1) It's a tough life as an artist. You need more than just good drawing abilities to get by. I know a lot of people who are WAY better than me but can't make it as artists. You need to be personable and likable. Work on your people skills and be sincere. People can tell when it's fake.
2) Learn a broad range of skills. Don't just focus on illustration, but also learn the fundamentals of design, sculpture, painting, storyboarding, etc... those skill will help you more than you can possibly imagine.
3) Be yourself. Find your own style and really refine it.
4) Don't waste your education. Don't go out and party and drink when you should be studying and doing homework. They give you that homework for a reason!
5) Always try to be the best. Challenge yourself to make your assignments the best in your class. Always try to be

Home sucks right now, let's put that out there. My dad is on his last legs, and family is practically begging him to go to the hospital, as we aren't too keen to having someone die inside the house. And I found out that when my dad does indeed pass away, I, along with my family, are being thrown out by our grandparents. They said that they cannot support us as well as themselves, and the only way we are supporting ourselves is by my dad. My mom won't be able to get disability until January or February, and housing wouldn't be applicable until sometime in the spring I guess. She had found an agency to help out, but after I bombarded her with questions, she admitted that they cannot help me and my brother because my mom is disabled, and we are healthy, young. However, if we cannot live here, nor go with my mom, we are then homeless.
As I have told people before, (I think) we cannot get jobs bec

"Lynx" is known as "Axe" in some regions. Not quite sure why.
Say the word "Lynx" and it conjures imagery of lithe, feline predators.
What springs to mind when you say "Axe"?

Sketchbook Pro 6So most of you know that I'm a Sketchbook Pro user.Sketchbook Pro 63 years ago in Personal More Like This
A few days back, Autodesk released Sketchbook Pro 6, and I think this is the version that's going to make a lot of people who have YET to experience Sketchbook Pro in full, or haven't really given the past versions a chance, switch over to making it their digital drawing software of choice; heck, even their PAINTING software of choice.
We still have the cleverly-designed user interface, that makes it easy on the eyes and mind when we're brainstorming and sketching. With the handful of new tools introduced, we still have a clutter-free drawing environment, and man, there's some awesome tools this time around. I'll go down the list:
The Brush Library
The main brush toolbar itself has a click-and-drag function, allowing you to store all your often-used brushes in each of the "lanes". You then can click the button on the upper-right and then a fu
R.I.P. PockyIt's really hard for me to tell you this but Pocky passed away about 12 hours ago, at 1 pm Friday Oct 25th. I lost my balance in the colony cage and accidentally step on him who was behind me. He didn't die instantly. I thought he wouldn't. He could still fly and when I put him on my hand he had started panting. When I brought him inside my house, he had a fit then died.R.I.P. Pocky1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I can't stop crying now. I feel so horrible and hate myself. I miss him so much I can't stop crying and calling his name. It's so hard to accept his death. I can still feel him everywhere. Everything in my house reminds me of him. I can't sleep on my bed because I usually snuggled with him there before we went to sleep. I can't believe he had to go away like this. I feel so guilty no matter what I try to think of, no matter what my husband said. I can't even cry as harder as I want because he will be mad.
I don't know if Pocky knew his time would be up soon. But this month he wanted to cuddle more with me. He usually a
Writers contest!! With $ prizesHello all, and welcome to FFS's first writing contest.Writers contest!! With $ prizes2 months ago in Personal More Like This
Here are the rules:
The story must be about our OCs! You have 19 to choose from. There’s no minimum or maximum of OCs you can include in the story (except for an obvious upper limit of 19, because that's all we have!). Them must be the main characters, but do not need to be the only ones.
The help you know them better, here they are:
The minimum length of story we'll accept is 10 Microsoft Word pages at font size 12 (or equivalent), with no upper limit.
And now, what would we like you write about?
Well, the contest will be about fetishes, naturally. Which ones? All the ones you can see in our gallery can be used, but here we'll give you a tentative list.
Blueberry, or other less common fruit girls like pear, raspberry, watermelon,

Lucy paled as Erza went and got some rope; before she could protest she squealed as Erza gave her a slap on the butt. "Arms over your head," the redhead ordered sternly.
Lucy was quick to obey, not wanting another spank.

Sins of an ArtistI've been under fire recently for having the audacity to admit publicly that improving my art has never been, and never was, an ultimate goal of mine. Apparently that's like committing some sort of mortal sin in the art community. I've had trouble expressing myself about it too, because brushing off improvement for improvement sake makes me look like I'm uncaring, egocentric, and stubborn. But after a recent post I was given much more clarity in understanding the issue and I wanted to share my thoughts with you.Sins of an Artist3 years ago in Personal More Like This
In the recent exchange I was basically told this: "If doing what you love isn't about dedicating your life to improving your art, you aren't an artist."
Maybe I'm old fashioned, but making art has never been solely about the technical expertise. Even in college, outside the handful of foundation courses you take in freshman year, perfection of the craft is often secondary to concepts and ideas and your ability to evoke feelings and emotions in your audience.
How to Make 2D Tile sets for games Part 1 + MoreHey everyone! How to Make 2D Tile sets for games Part 1 + More2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I just uploaded a new tutorial, the first in the series, all about making 2D tiles and tile sets for games!
Things covered in this episode:
- The anatomy of a basic tileset
- Setting up and using Photoshop's grid system for making tiles
- Using Photoshop's Offset filter to make tiles seamless
- Adapting a tiling texture into a tileset
- Some results of a finished basic tileset
- Thoughts and some opinions!
- I forgot to master the audio. Sorry if I sound just a tad muffly!
Also recently uploaded by Tyler Edlin, this video about perspective drawing where I also have a segment about how to make perspective grids in Photoshop!
By the way, have you been paying attention to my tumblr? I post stuff like this more often there, as I only see my DA journal as a means to communicate about mo

It looks like...Okay, so I've been on Deviantart for well over 7 years now, and please let me just put something out there when it comes to seeing comments on works. It looks like...3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I'm sure we all get comments such as: "Wow amazing! Reminds me of X or Y or potato!"
That awkward moment when you have no idea what that was, so you bust out google and search it up, only to find out that it looks NOTHING like what people said.
Now, please don't get me wrong. I have no problem with comments or feedback such as ones above. I truly appreciate how viewers are trying to relate your piece in their own ways.
What I CANNOT STAND (and I know there are many of you out there who feel the same), are comments like these:
When you make an image of something such as a practical robot or a futuristic (but not too futuristic) car that still uses wheels.
"Um, your image looks too much like Z, X, Y,...."
That moment when what they described, was the most generic design for a robot or any ordinary car done by another present day

Happy 100th!!I would like to give :iconjordanventurian: a warm round of applause for persevering, and making A Skyrim Tale for 100 episodes!!!Happy 100th!!1 year ago in Personal More Like This
The series has made us laugh, cry, feel the pain, and enjoy the victories of a glorious battle!!!
And I think I speak for all of us when I say: THANK YOU VENTURIAN!!!!!!! We hope you make 100 more!!!
To me, the Skyrim crew has become more than characters in a game.
They have become real flesh and blood Dark Elves, Nords, Avengers, and Animals. They have become family.
I'm sure we all remember when Vahl first climbed out of that boat dressed like a complete nerd and when our little crew of Vahl, Lydia, and Lil'Vent (R.I.P.) started growing into a family.
We have gained a lot of members to our group, but at a cost.
We have won a lot of battles, but at a cost.
We have grown, and we have shrunk.
We have laughed, we have cried, we have laughed until we cried!!
We have gained, we have lost.
We have quicksaved and run away a lot!
But one thing will always be the
A tragic dayToday is a very sad day in France. A terrorist squad assaulted the office of Charlie Hebdo, a satirical newspaper. They opened fire and murdered in cold blood 12 people, including redactors of the newspaper and 4 prominent cartoonists. Some policemen are among the victims as well, as they stood no chances against what appears to be a group with military grade training and weapons.A tragic day2 months ago in Personal More Like This
I am incredibly shocked by this… As a drawer myself I feel even more affected. It's like there is ice in my spine. One of the victim, Cabu, was a comic author, who drew many comics albums and countless little drawings in magazines I read when I was a kid. To hear now he was assassinated with his friends, standing near their drawing boards leave me…. speechless
Literally. I don't know what to say right now...
I suppose I could speak a bit about them. They were all famous for their caustic and satiric humor, poking fun at virtually anything. They were a loud bunch, often tasteless
