This is my entry to the so I herd u liek progress? contest for fan-artists. Where the goal simply is to pick an old fan-art (the more shameful, the better) and remake it with present-day skills to show the improvement. A thumbnail to the original one made about 5 years ago is at the bottom, Try not to focus too much on how awful that is, just how much of an improvement this version is
So basically the concept had to be the same, so I just drew Cloud resting after what has probably been a long day of keeping Sephiroth at bay I think my use of lighting and shadow is stronger now, anatomy a bit too. And I at least tried to use an interesting perspective too that seems more "heroic". No reference was used for the pose or angle either so I had to go out on limb for that I was almost going to draw Sephiroth but none of my old Sephy pics seemed worth re-doing.
Update: Changed the angle of his chin to match the rest of the face more due to several comments on that. It was easier to edit that than re-do the whole face.

About this (WIP) image: Pulling the camera back from the cover art: A ground-based beam weapon fired into a hillside reveals a secret cave and an entrance to the Locusts' 'subseranean' Hollow.
Before I started, I showed the new Gears 3 cover art to some friends and family and asked for their impressions. Those who were unfamiliar with Gears thought the game was about conventional warfare (between humans, on Earth). That makes sense, as the only Locust on the cover art is small and lost in the background haze. So I set out to take the cover art just a bit further, with the aim of clearing up any misconceptions the casual observer might have about the game.
Marcus is the undisputed face, icon, and leading star of Gears of War, so more than anything I wanted a tricked out, detailed version of him (still working on it), with an equally tricked out (and gold) Lancer rifle. The rest of the scene was painted to show that Gears of War is much more than just "a war game". It has everything. Beauty, full immersiion, and with more than a little of the fantastic throughout.
Any feedback, especially suggestions and critiques, are much appreciated!
