I've made it pretty clear how I feel about the rights of creators and how those rights are abused by big companies. Protect what you create and most of all understand it's value.

Permanent Project Policy Statement Hi All---Permanent Project Policy Statement5 months ago in Personal More Like This
I'm writing this with absolutely no intention of being unkind, rude, or angry----I'm not trying to stomp on anyone's creative dreams, or pick on anyone in particular. Truth is, I've been really busy lately, and I haven't had time to reply to each inquiry note I get.
So here's my blanket policy statement, and a request---Please read it before you contact me about a potential project:
Please stop writing me to ask if I'll draw your creator-owned project that you've written that you'd like me to draw for free. I appreciate that you believe in your work, and that you believe that this will benefit us both, but the cold truth is this: I do not work for free. Illustration is a job for me. I am a professional illustrator, and I have a family to support. Free work is something that I just can't do, and it's inappropriate to ask me to do so.
I'm going to leave this journal posted here for a wh

DEPARTMENT Ohttp://www.monkeypipestudios.com/DEPARTMENT O1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Comic creator Jamie Gambell has been kind enough to let me read an advance copy of his latest comic creation, Department O. Written by Gamble, Illustrated by Andrew Ross Maclean, and colored by Heather Breckel, the first issue dives head-long into a rocking supernatural-steampunk adventure.
Andrew Ross Maclean's artwork fits this world beautifully. It rides the sweet spot between Mike Mignola & Guy Davis's Hellboy/BPRD work, while bringing it's own madcap cartoony tone that pushes the visuals into the absurd, in the best possible way.
The preview I read was in black and white, however a color version of the cover is on Jamie Gambell's deviant art page: http://jamiegambell.deviantart.com/#/d4wn1e7
And if Breckel's work on The Hero Code is any indicicator, the colors on this book will be gorgeous.
As the story opens, you get the sense that you are playing catch-up, in a complex machine that began chugging into motion long before

Love and MarriageListened to two comic creator interviews a while back. An episode of John Siuntres' Word Balloon, featuring Greg Rucka ( http://wordballoon.blogspot.com/2011/11/rob-liefeld-speaks-out-and-rucka.html ) and the C.C. Beck Shop Talk interview bonus feature on the Will Eisner DVD: Portrait of a Sequential Artist, ( http://montillapictures.com/ )Love and Marriage2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I found it interesting that the writer, Rucka, wished to god he had the ability to draw, reminding listeners that comic books are and have always been a visual medium.
In the C.C. Beck interview, he's of the opinion that artwork is secondary and should always take a back seat to the story itself. When people think back on the great comic stories they love, it's "The Story" that they remember, not the drawings.
I find it interesting that both creators would have such opposing views, but a positive view of their creative counterparts. I'm a writer/artist, so I look at it like, "Can't have one, without the other."
What about Comics? Now that Avengers has landed and Batman and Spider-Man are close behind in the summer movie schedule the question always gets asked: What does this mean for comics? Does it raise sales on the books? Is the success of these power house comic movies going to cause a flood of new fans to attack the comics stores in mass like a zombie invasion? What about Comics?2 years ago in Personal More Like This
As I mentioned in my previous post about Free Comic Book Day many kids asked for Captain America and Iron Man sketches. The awareness created by the films is obvious and widespread. These films and the advertising around them generates interest but what happens when these new fans want more? Where do they get new product and how do they know which books to pick up?
In the past I've blogged about how important I think it is for the Big Two to push the comics business through the other product. You can read my thoughts about it here: http://karlaltstaetter.blogspot.com/2011/10/what-should-marvel-do.html

Moebius MeadToday I was fortunate to see the work of one my artistic heroes Syd Mead at his Progressions show at the Forest Lawn Museum. It was fantastic to see his work up close. As I've mentioned in past blogs experiencing art in person is different than looking at a series of jpegs. I found an even deeper respect for Mead by seeing the amount of detail that goes into every single aspect of his paintings while still maintaining fantastic compositions and of course innovative designs. It's fantastic when you think how great his work is on so many levels. The kicker for me was seeing some of Mead's earliest work. Not yet the master he would become but still clearly an amazing talent. The exhibit is free so if you are in the LA area make some time to get up there and have a look. I also recommend watching the documentary on Syd Mead. I ran into it a few years back and I find myself watching it at least once a year for inspiration and to get back to why I do art.Moebius Mead2 years ago in Personal More Like This

jdmakescomics.comAfter way too long and way too many false starts, my website is finally up. It's in a bit of a rough state at the moment, but I intend to polish up that sucker once I get the breathing room to apply the elbow grease.jdmakescomics.com2 years ago in Personal More Like This
My plan is for it to be a one-stop-site for all of my future projects -- 5-6 issue minis of varying genres is the idea as of right this second -- and to give me a spot on the web of my own to get behind and advertise. First up is a comic :icondan-sch: and I have been working on for way too long and that has gone through as many revisions, if not more, as my attempts to get this site off the ground: San Hannibal.
I co-wrote this one with Dan and did all of the art and lettering. I've been wanting to get it out in the world for months now, so I hope everyone enjoys our efforts. Bookmark us, leave a comment if you can. And hell, enjoy the comics.
Anyone want to do some flatting?I'm drowning.Anyone want to do some flatting?2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Always biting off more than I can chew.
If there are any aspiring colorists out there that would love some experience and BOOK CREDIT, I would love some assistance in flatting my book MEATSPACE. Really it's black and white, so really its just greys you'll be working with.
I can't offer money but its great for your portfolio and you'll have a book under your belt... I will mention, while there are no deals stuck as of right now, we have had publisher interest and THIS IS NOT A PITCH, it will be self-published to start and will have a home somewhere. Where are still discussing all of our options.
Please let me know if you are interested (photoshop only please) by responding or noting me.
You will be my savior and hopefully it would be a good experience for you too.
