A credible alternative to Cintiq !A credible alternative to Cintiq !2 years ago in Personal More Like This
It's the second in depth review I read about the new Yiynova MSP19U drawing tablet and the reactions to it appears to have been overwhelmingly positive in the illustration world so far
I have a Wacom Cintiq tablet myself. It's a truly wonderful tool but you have to cut yourself an arm to get it. They are very easily past the 2000$ range and they are monsters, totally impossible to move around comfortably.
So if you are an artist and considering to get more serious about it, you might want to look into the Yiynova.
At more or less 600$ It's basically 4 times cheaper than a Cintiq and much lighter, for performances that are more than satisfying according to many critics and roughly in the same league than Cintiqs. I didn't checked it myself but it certainly looks interesting !
All in all it's a good thing that Wacom is getting concurrents on the market. They had a 10 years complete monopoly and while their products are very dura
Year of the Indie ComicIndie Comics have always been on that bleeding edge of where comics are going. The type of stories, the level of creative energy is what keeps the industry going and thriving as an art form. For those of you that are tired of corporate comics and looking for something different here are some creators that are pushing the boundaries of Comics by telling different types of stories with different styles. This is the year of the Indie Comic!Year of the Indie Comic4 years ago in Personal More Like This

DeviantART is once again heading to Comic-Con International: San Diego! This year, we’re offering six scholarships to emerging comic artists to attend San Diego Comic-Con 2012 as guests of deviantART.
Who should apply?
We're looking for artists who have always dreamt of going to Comic-Con and who want to make the most of the experience. Applicants must be serious about attending Comic-Con and must be willing and able to come to San Diego, California between July 12 through 15.
The chosen artists will spend one day at Comic-Con, where they will be able to show their portfolio in Artists' Alley. When not showcasing their work, scholarship recipients will be able to cruise the convention floor, attend panels, and introduce themselves to prominent artists in the industry, with a chance to pick their brains and gain artistic inspiration right from the source.
The six recipients will each receive:

What about Comics? Now that Avengers has landed and Batman and Spider-Man are close behind in the summer movie schedule the question always gets asked: What does this mean for comics? Does it raise sales on the books? Is the success of these power house comic movies going to cause a flood of new fans to attack the comics stores in mass like a zombie invasion? What about Comics?3 years ago in Personal More Like This
As I mentioned in my previous post about Free Comic Book Day many kids asked for Captain America and Iron Man sketches. The awareness created by the films is obvious and widespread. These films and the advertising around them generates interest but what happens when these new fans want more? Where do they get new product and how do they know which books to pick up?
In the past I've blogged about how important I think it is for the Big Two to push the comics business through the other product. You can read my thoughts about it here: http://karlaltstaetter.blogspot.com/2011/10/what-should-marvel-do.html

Moebius MeadToday I was fortunate to see the work of one my artistic heroes Syd Mead at his Progressions show at the Forest Lawn Museum. It was fantastic to see his work up close. As I've mentioned in past blogs experiencing art in person is different than looking at a series of jpegs. I found an even deeper respect for Mead by seeing the amount of detail that goes into every single aspect of his paintings while still maintaining fantastic compositions and of course innovative designs. It's fantastic when you think how great his work is on so many levels. The kicker for me was seeing some of Mead's earliest work. Not yet the master he would become but still clearly an amazing talent. The exhibit is free so if you are in the LA area make some time to get up there and have a look. I also recommend watching the documentary on Syd Mead. I ran into it a few years back and I find myself watching it at least once a year for inspiration and to get back to why I do art.Moebius Mead3 years ago in Personal More Like This

Always biting off more than I can chew.
If there are any aspiring colorists out there that would love some experience and BOOK CREDIT, I would love some assistance in flatting my book MEATSPACE. Really it's black and white, so really its just greys you'll be working with.
I can't offer money but its great for your portfolio and you'll have a book under your belt... I will mention, while there are no deals stuck as of right now, we have had publisher interest and THIS IS NOT A PITCH, it will be self-published to start and will have a home somewhere. Where are still discussing all of our options.
Please let me know if you are interested (photoshop only please) by responding or noting me.
You will be my savior and hopefully it would be a good experience for you too.

It is NOT a belief system I'm trying to preach, or some fundamental universal truth that I hold dear to my heart. I'm just musing here. Listening Kevin Smith's Smodcast. In Episode 52, they have a hilarious discussion about the apocalype and the type of end-of-the-world disaster movie they'd like to see.
One I really hope they make this movie someday, even though Smith claims he's retiring from film making.
Two Smith posed a philosophical question about the Second Coming to co-host Scott Mosier, which revolved around the fact that he's an agnostic. Mosier's first response was " Well, obviously, if there's a 50ft tall Jesus walking around shooting laser beams from his eyes, I'm not an agnost

For many of us, the first “art gallery” to command our attention (and constant, even daily, monitoring) in our
lives existed within the pages of the local newspaper. It was called “the movie section” and its ever-changing movie
advertisements were like little frames that rarely contained less than pure magic for young imaginations.
The Film Poster has existed since the earliest days of silent movies and the pulse-elevating excitement of the
first sight of an upcoming adventure, action, or sweeping love story that we might have only “heard good things about”
still packs a psychic punch throughout movie lovers today.

Issue No. 2|Archives
If the severely acne-scarred face and coarse exterior brought on by his alcoholic and depressed life was the book cover of his being, then Charles was the ultimate book that could not be judged by its cover.
The exquisite collection that was this everyman artist’s art consisted of thousands of poems, hundreds of short stories and six novels—mostly all wrenchingly autobiographical, mostly all about moments of epiphany and grace in an otherwise miserable and unhappy existence. The perfect explication of the common man's deepest truth; it's not easy to be here.
Unvarnished and brutal blunt force trauma underlined with hope, beauty, longing, and love.
Therein lies the power of his poet
