I've been wanting to paint a Gears of War battle scene.

My entry for the Gears of War 3 art contest being held here on dA. The locust appear on the left in the form of a Brumak and Reaver. They are a bit darker, both to fit in with the dark feel of the original game and also to be more subtle as they are, for the majority of Gears 3, sort of "in the background". There's a new threat. That's where the focus is. So Marcus is looking their direction. You'll see the stalks, a drudge, and a drone busting out of the ground which I liked a lot on Gears 3. It's like the Grub Hole Express.

As for Marcus himself I put him in cover, which is obviously a huge part of the series. His right boot has bloodstains thanks to the almightly "curb-stomp". And lastly, to contrast from all other promotional material for the game, I chose not to feature the Lancer or Retro Lancer as the star weapon. The Longshot has always been a fan favorite and I think it needs some love.

Technical: 100% done in GIMP. Default Round Brush. During the final polish I took some photos of metal, gravel and bricks around here on some "Overlay" layers for a bit more texture.

Driven by the crazy visuals and gameplay the series has established, I decided to spend whatever time I had outside of work to indulge myself in this Gears piece. Lost a couple of nights of sleep but hey when push comes to shove any gearhead knows ya just gotta go all out.

DISCLAIMER: Assets generated for use in the composition of this image were taken from the GOW3 Asset Pack provided for this challenge including the Savage Locust, Brumak, and Berserker all of which are property of Epic Games. All credits and thanks to the visual art team that created the original pieces for all of us to work with.

...because there needs to be more blood-flinging chainsaw-weapons involved.

For the Gears of War 3 contest. Wish I had more time...
10 Hours. If somehow I was able to do more work on it, I totally would.

Here's my entry for the GOW art contest and first attempt at drawing anything Gears related. I couldn't pass up the opportunity on a contest involving one of my favorite video game franchises. Plus there's 100 prizes that are all pretty damn cool so here's hoping I win something. :fingerscrossed:

I listened to the Gears 3 soundtrack the entire time I whipped this out and it helped inspire a ton, especially "Finally a Tomorrow". It's going to be sad seeing this series end but hopefully I'm wrong and there's more planned for the C.o.G. in the future.

I wont get too wordy about my process with this here, so if you curious about that check out my blog post about it here ---> [link]

Hope you all dig it. :)

Had a lot of fun doing this, especially since the anatomy of gears characters is so different than actual human proportion.

In this drawing I tried to have the viewer decide what he or she thinks the outcome will be. Will they survive? Why does Marcus have a smirk on his face?

I also tried to follow the rules closely by adding an area on the lower left corner for logos and some space on the left side of the image for other icons.

All artwork painted in PSCS2 & Intuos 3

I wanted to create a follow-on image from the original poster. A 'later-in-the-day' version, when things have turned sour and that Fan has seen some heavy action.

Also wanted to focus more on the grittiness and bleakness of the War & the World. Was thinking of epic last stands and fights-against-the-odds.

The 4 main figures stayed pretty much the sme from the original sketch but the two ladies went through a number of pose edits. I did a version with one of them getting shot/wouned with some blood spatter but decided to edit it for the contest. The flag bearer was originally looking backwards towards the nuclear explosion but as this was thier last stand I wanted her more involved. In the end they are all focused on thier Nemesis who lurks just off camera.

My most complex piece to date and I feel that I did achieve what I was aiming for. Will probably do some minor tweaking and balancing once I have a few days break from it.

Great experience and very happy to have been a part of the contest. Thanks to all the folks involved in hosting the event!

Everything is painted in PS with the exception of some clouds from the provided material. I wanted to paint my own characters but also make sure that they were instantly identified.
