About StrawmenAlright a couple of things...About Strawmen3 years ago in Personal More Like This
First off, I'm getting really tired of people assuming that every character I create has to be a 1:1 representation of something. Be it a strawman, a mary sue, or whatever. I didn't have this problem before I started working on SYAC, but I have a feeling it's because I earned a bad reputation early on.
In some of the earliest SYAC comics (done almost a year ago I might add) I had my character arguing against broad representations of "fans." They were the closest thing I've ever done to a strawman comic and I realized right away how negative and petty it was. I stopped doing them, but by that point I fear the damage was already done. I had made a bad first impression, and first impressions are the most important.
Ever since then whenever a new character pops up in SYAC, people assume they must be a representation of something. Curmudgeonly Carl? He must represent hatred of fine artists. Persistent Pam? She must represent haters. Tenko? He must represent hat
Back to School and Accepting CriticismI am sick to death of people bitching to me that I can't accept criticism.Back to School and Accepting Criticism3 years ago in Personal More Like This
And I'm tired of people thinking that I don't WANT constructive feedback or that I block anyone who "offers" it.
But because I'm tired of writing long defense journals trying to open people's eyes to what I think is noticeable improvement on my part.... we're gonna try something a little different.
I think the best way to tell if I am accepting criticism is to SEE it in action. So this is what I'm gonna do. Each week I am going to post something I'm working on, be it a page from a comic, an illustration, or whatever. I'm gonna start with the pencil sketches and I'm going to allow everyone everywhere to critique it.
But hang on... I don't just want people writing longwinded essays pointing out what's wrong with it and how to improve...
I'm a visual learner and I need to see what I am doing wrong in order to get better. You'll be able to download it and draw on it, resubmit it as a link in a comment, redraw it ent

Opinion of a friendWell, like the journal says, I will be posting what my friend :deveasatea: asked me to post while we were talking about our views on 'sane' Hetalia fans. I liked it a lot, so here it is:Opinion of a friend3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Okay, this is kind of about those 'sane' Hetalia fans. I know there's actually real sane fans, but on DA and Tumblr, I don't see sanity, I see a bunch of assholes. To me, all they seem to do is complain about the flaws of the fandom. That's why I left that group for sane fans. No sanity there, just whining. Okay, you guys can stop making stamps, we get it. I know you don't like stupid Hetalia fans, I know you don't like fans who are all like "PASTAAAA", we know you don't like the yaoi or the fact that people think Hetalia is educational or that it promotes world peace. After the 15th stamp I've seen on shit like this, I just thought I'd say something. If you don't like it, go to another fandom, because this one doesn't need your crap. And on Tumblr, I saw a group that was showing really crazy fa

Improving your artOne of the most important thing to do in order to improve your art is..Improving your art3 years ago in Personal More Like This
This is one thing I realized a lot of artists will not listen to. There is a reason why there are class critiques in school and professionals who dedicate their life to this. It is not to criticize you as a person or what you do, it is to help you improve and point out things that you may not see. When you work on something for a long time, you tend to miss out on things because you stare at a picture for so long.
Honestly it really bothers me when I see people so against receiving critiques and start bashing the critic for their help. The person commenting just wants to help you. Something people should really worry about instead is not receiving any critiques, cause that means people who look at your art doesn't care about it enough to say anything. If you REALLY don't accept what they are saying, you should thank them anyways.
If a person take the time out of their day
If you don't accept criticism, you won't improveThis statement is, to be blunt, incredibly stupid. I see it repeated around DevianART and, as bad as it is hearing it from the general public, I have to laugh uproarously when I see it coming from an artist. I usually try to be more diplomatic, but sometimes my inner Snape just can't be contained. If you don't accept criticism, you won't improve3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Here is the reality of the situation. A person who is building a set of skills can improve without feedback of any kind. Through trial and error, a human being can identify their own mistakes and, with honest work, rectify those mistakes. To say that this is not possible is so counter to reality as to be absurd. I could give thousands of examples but I'll just say this: if it were not for an individual's ability to invent skills from within themselves we would have absolutely no skills to pass on to other people.
Is this a good reason to reject any kind of negative criticism or criticism in general? Does this mean that criticism is useless? Absolutely not. This
Totally Made A Little Girl's Day [EDITED FOR NEWS][EDIT]Totally Made A Little Girl's Day [EDITED FOR NEWS]3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I just ran into my little friend and her mother again, here at the library!
She recognized me and came right up to me while I was logging in, just now! X3 She gave me a hug and showed me some of the new drawings she's been working on!
HAPPY DAY, GUYS! 8D MY DAY IS NOW OFFICIALLY A HAPPY DAY!
No, the title doesn't lie.
I made a little girl's day, today. (And apparently her mother's as well.)
I had gone into work and been asked to clock on early because the training manager was running behind in what all she needed to get done so the store could be ready when we opened, and therefore, there would be no one to watch the dining room register in the event customers came in.
And I'm so glad I did this.
Right about 11:00 exactly, I was watching the dining room while one of my coworkers was restocking parfait ingredients behind me, when all of a sudden I hear a little voice squeak "Excuse me" from the other side of the counter. I walked to the

This Thursday, April 5, Bento Box will be hosting a silent art auction at the Animation Guild in Burbank CA to benefit storyboard artist Joey Adams and his family. I do not yet have the pleasure of knowing Joey, but the Los Angeles animation community is really rallying around him and his family's current crisis trying to save the life of one of their little boys--- only a couple years after tragically losing their 16-month-old daughter to a similar condition. (You can read about Joey's story

The Derpy Issue Part 4 (final)Alright, so now we get to the crux of the matter. Hasbro has finally made a statement:The Derpy Issue Part 4 (final)3 years ago in Personal More Like This
"The 'My Little Pony Friendship is Magic' series has always been about acceptance and inclusion, and the series strives to convey that through the playful antics of a diverse cast of characters. Some viewers felt that aspects of the episode 'The Last Roundup' did not stay true to the core message of friendship which is the heart and soul of the series. Hasbro Studios decided to make slight audio alterations to this single episode."
NOW would be the appropriate time to start getting all freaked out over this issue. Personally, I am not going to worry too much. I am disheartened that they've chosen to respond this way, but I am not surprised. Hasbro is a corporation, they have to think of their image. "Derpy" is a debatable term that can either mean "goofy and silly" or "insulting towards disabled people" and frankly I agree that this is not an appropriate word to be used for a kids TV show

Sure, we all rally and bitch about PIPA CIPA and all the other bills. And we scare enough political people to get them to back off. Great. But like I said, its not over.
But wait, there have not been new bills have they? Not really. But they gave up on the law. They had a back up. In case they could not get it legally they go illegally.
From what I have read starting (maybe) July 12th (assuming they are ready and do it) ISPs, yes your internet provider, will begin monitoring you online.
From what I can understand all major high speed internet service providers will begin to watch to see if you use TORRENT sites (such as Pirate Bay) and torrent clients such as U Torrent and they will keep a database of all who do. They will warn you a few times then after say 5 warnings to stop they can begin to punish you.
Controversial Musicals!Hello everyone,Controversial Musicals!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I know it seems that every time I post a journal here, I'm asking you a favour. You may be thinking of me as some kind of loser-user boyfriend, but I can assure you this is not the case! I just love you, and I know you're the right people to ask when I need genuinely helpful people to speak to about musicals! Please don't break up with me... I know we can still make this work.
ANYWAY, what I'm here to start discussions about today is the subject of "controversial musicals". That is, any musical that has shocked/offended/outraged any particular group of people - or perhaps even everyone. I'm an English student, and my plan for my dissertation is to look at media coverage surrounding such musicals, and analyse how language has been used to narrate, analyse and even cause this controversy. I'm also possibly going to look at how this was received in different cultures/parts of the world, so if you leave a comment it would be great if you could let me know where you
SOPAA few months back I wrote a journal about an internet censorship bill that was looking to be passed in the congress. The bill was poorly written, but the broadness of the wording freaked a lot of internet dwellers out. People were scared their favorite websites would be censored or removed completely. Thankfully the bill didn't pass. Unthankfully a new version is going up for vote now and this time it's getting far more support.SOPA3 years ago in Personal More Like This
SOPA = Stop Online Piracy Act
Once again it's very broadly written and could have very serious implications if it gets passed. The bill is written with the expressed purpose of being able to take legal action against online piracy in foreign markets. It seems likely that the bill is meant to snub out piracy sites like ThePirateBay.org, but the wording is so broad that it's very possible that it could have serious repercussions elsewhere.
Yesterday the bill was supposed to be voted on, but it was delayed due to a filibuster. It's currently set to be voted
A Fantastic Tool for Combating Art ThievesLooking back at that art thief incident, I was reminded of the times in which I came across a familiar work in a thief's gallery but had NO idea where the original was. I was lucky that someone was able to recognize my work and inform me of the theft, but there are so much unreported theft on deviantART and on the Internet as a whole, and its harder to report the theft without links to an original source. Now, I know I'm not the first to discover this tool (in fact, I'm probably the last and will most likely receive a chorus of "Oh, I already knew that!" responses, but this is too important to ignore), but Google has extra features to its image search engine: reverse image search.A Fantastic Tool for Combating Art Thieves3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Basically, you can find most websites featuring the image in question by clicking on camera icon in the query box (images.google.com), copy/paste image URL into the box OR upload the image, and then hit search! Within the first couple hits should be the original
So I'm finally doing itWith enough encouragement and support I am finally, finally writing a letter to my grandmother about...everything. The pain she causes from religion, how she turned me away from it, the harm I do to myself when she pushes me to the edge...So I'm finally doing it3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I wrote it all and all five pages are in my hand with my entire confession.
I couldn't take the nightmares anymore, and I couldn't take the fights. I could no longer tolerate fearing God and his word. Did you know I actually froze in terror when I was asked to say Grace on Christmas? "Bless Us Oh Lord"? I actually froze and pretended I forgot. I nearly took a panic attack when my boyfriend invited me to Christmas Eve mass.
Yes, it is all that bad. The way I see it, this will either end the moment she reads it or...or I lose my loving Nana. I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being the latter.
I'm going to slip it into something of hers she always uses. Maybe her glasses case, and I'm going to attach a note that says "read when you're alone."
