I am commanded to my duty, whatever the stakes.
That gesture can execute the task at hand.
I see the fear in your eyes, and I understand.
Its a surprise to me, looking down at you.
Im sorry dear friend, but it's something I must do.
Ive told you once, a thousand times more!
My companions will catch you, its this job they adore!
You took not my warnings, nor heeded my pleas.
As I told you that day, youre down on your knees.
Ohh Light how I wish, I could take it all back.
But with a snap of my fingers, I hear just a crack.
I hide my stains behind my low brim.
I wallow in shame, as I listen to him.
Congratulations, praise is given to me.
You have done well, youve done your duty.
As the lines file out, and the flickering lights fade.
I see only your face, and the lines your smile made.
I should have protected you, prevented that day.
But its not all my fault, it was the only way!

Chapter 1 The days after..
The evening was setting on Ba Sing Se... in the midst of the celebrations and parties that followed the avatars victory over the fire lord weeks before. People from all corners of the Earth kingdom and water tribes and even the fire nation were in attendance, celebrating in the streets and tearing down the once shadowing monuments the previous fire lord had put up in their city.
The entire gang was taking some much needed rest in their new home in the upper ring of the city. It was a modest home nestled near the Jasmine Dragon that Iroh had reconquered for himself, making it the official Pai-sho tea shop in the the upper ring.
Sokka suddenly poked his crutch up in the air to get everyone's attention
"Guys....I just realized something".
Toph leaned back in her chair and smirked looking at the ceiling, "Your ponytail makes you look a little girlie?"
"IT is a warriors WOLF TAIL!" Sokka said matter of factly pointing to his hair

Zuko knew that, but somehow it didnt happen. He wasnt running, he was kneeling on a bridge, staring over the edge at the freezing water below. Water that, minutes ago, had come alive and plucked Admiral Zhao from the bridge. Fool. He deserved it. Yet Zuko had still tried to help him, although he couldnt have said why. He watched Zhao sink from his sight, down into the canal.
The full moon shone in the night sky above him, as though nothing had ever happened. As though nothing had threatened to upset the careful balance the spirits held over the entire world. Zuko had never considered himself an especially spiritual person, but one did not spend years in Uncles company and not pick up on a few things.

He was doing all in his power to keep the image of Ed, standing in the woods alone, sick and injured, out of his mind.
It wasn’t as far away as he had thought; the forest must have distorted the noise, for it wasn’t ten minutes before he tore into the clearing, right back at the river.
The place looked like ground zero for the apocalypse, as if giant hands had reached down from the heavens and tore the earth asunder. Nothing was as it should be, with trees and rocks shattered, plates of earth slicing through the water’s surface, and river stones transformed into sharp spikes.
He quickly located Alphonse, caught in dangerous close combat with Scar. The boy’s armor was a mass of dents, and part of his breastplate was simply missing, but as Ed had often bragged, Alphonse was a skilled martial artist and was holding off the older man

“It’s still way too cold out there!” May complained in her squeaky, yet cute voice as they entered the house.
“Yeah, it’s never been this cold around this time of year.” Alphonse replied as he held the door open for her.
They both shuffled their way into the kitchen, and began putting the food away when May stopped her movement.
“What is it?” Al asked.
She pivoted herself around and face Al, craning her neck upwards, “It’s quiet.”
Al stopped for a second and realized that she was right. No one had come to meet them yet. “Huh, that’s odd." He carried on putting the food away, "Whenever I come here, the

He had spent most of the night propped against the cavern walls in a light doze. One reason was the constant threat of Scar showing up at any moment. He honestly hoped the man was remotely human and needed sleep like everyone else. With any luck, he had bedded down somewhere for the night, but as Roy was starting to realize, luck was in short supply. He wasn't about to take any chances by letting the man catch them completely dead to the world.
The other reason his slumber had been so light was that Ed had fallen asleep on his shoulder, and eventually on his lap, the fever making him restless and sometimes downright violent. Roy had received an automail fist in his jaw for his trouble. Thankfully there wasn't much force in it, so there wouldn't be much more than a bruise, but it did nothing to improve Roy's sleep.
It was a long night, and Roy vaguely wondered if the sun would ever come up.
Eventually, morning came, and with it, the desperate need to keep

He was not a morning person to begin with, and with the hopes of breakfast lying in a puddle on the ground, he was positively livid.
"Brother . . ." Al said warningly, sensing the turn in his mood.
Ed ignored him. With the fire of his anger as fuel, he stalked over to the tent to seek retribution for his empty stomach, splashing through puddles as the sky rumbled with thunder and echoed his temper. He flung open the tent flaps to regard Hughes and Mustang, still sleeping soundly in the predawn stillness.
Completely oblivious to his starvation.
"WHO WAS THE IDIOT THAT TIED UP THE FOOD?!"
Mustang and Hughes jumped a mile high, Hughes' hand scrambling for his throwing knives, and Mustang groping for his gloves.

But Ed had proven time and time again that he wasn’t normal.
His eyes were open by the time Hughes and Roy were able to reach his side, blank gold circles that stared at something neither man could see. Roy could make out a plate of metal in the boys hands, pressed to his chest tight enough to turn his knuckles white, but gently enough to not damage the precious blood seal there.
And of blood . . . there was so much of it, and no way to tell who it belonged to. Scar was a mutilated mess lying in the dirt, covered in swollen bruises, deep gashes and red fluid. Roy transmuted the man’s unconscious form to a tree, unwilling and unable to deal with him at the time. He turned away from him in complete and utter contempt. Perhaps it was wrong, but they had enough on their plate without worry

As they were walking back to the hotel, he looked at Winry’s exposed arm; a blue and purple bruise had formed where the needle was harshly shoved into her.
Winry noticed Ed’s stare and sighed, “It’s alright Ed, and it hardly even hurts, so don’t worry about it ok?” She flashed him a reassuring smile and looked back in front of her, wanting to see all the changes to Rush Valley.

"In here," Al answered from the kitchen.
Ditching his shoes and keys, Roy unbuttoned his military jacket and made his way to the kitchen. His nose suddenly caught the scent of tomatoes and garlic, making his stomach rumble hopefully as he stepped into the warm kitchen.
Alphonse was bent over the counter, slicing up onions while Ed was perched on the cabinet by the stove, his only arm absently stirring a pot of something over the burner beside him. Roy Mustang was not stupid, by any means. He was brilliant, cunning, calculating, and very much the military mastermind others claimed him to be.
This is not to say he did not have the occasional lapse in judgment.
“You broke my brother!” Alphonse said accusingly, small voice frantic as his red eyes darted from Roy to his brother.
Said brother was currently standing in the middle of Roy’s office, golden eyes glaring with full intensity at his commanding officer and face red with anger.

Golden eyes tore away from a book and looked up at the source of the high pitched voice, and his gaze met with a pair of wide blue orbs, on a face of a small girl with short light blonde hair.
"Yes," replied the boy in a rather nonchalant manner, then quickly shifted his eyes back to his book as if he wasn't interrupted, all in an attempt to hint to the curious blonde girl that he was not interested in holding a conversation with her.
But it became apparent that the girl wouldn't catch his drift as she sat down beside him on the park's bench that he was sitting on for a good four hours, reading his book of ancient runes and scientific theories.
"Don't you get...lonely?" asked the girl, raising her tone at the last word to highlight it for the boy. And once again, the boy brought his head up, pushed his golden locks out of his face and looked sternly at the girl; a look which would usually scare off other children.

But now, his side felt like it was on fire, with every inhalation, every step sheer agony. Fullmetal's weight added onto that of his weakened body only accentuated it, and Roy was having difficulty drawing breath, much less walking.

It had been like this for hours, ever since Roy had made the call to Hawkeye and Silas' office. Ed hadn't said a word, only holding onto Roy like his life depended on it.
