Seven years ago when I was struggling to learn portraiture, I remember saying to my mom, "When I "get" this, I'm going to teach everyone how to do it!" So here we are, seven years later and I'm ready to share the knowledge I've discovered.
After years of studying with professional portrait artists, lots of reading about how to draw the face, and by studying the works of master artists like Sargent, Bouguereau, Vanderpoel, and Loomis I'm ready to share the most helpful information I

'DRAW-A-LONG' (With Me) - Part 1 - Equipment'DRAW-A-LONG' (With Me) - Part 1 - Equipment2 years ago in Personal More Like This
OK so here with go with our 'Draw-A-Long' feature, today we will look at what materials I will use create the drawing. I have to underline that these are the tools that I will use. You may be able to get better results with different more or less pencils or a different grade paper – but these are what I will be using
Some of the materials are standard tools that should be in everyone's pencil case – others are not so – in particular the finer pencil eraser. I cannot recommend these enough, I tend to erase as much as I draw, not because of mistakes, but as a way of obtaining textures and blends – so please if you want to follow this series please try and hunt down one of these. The only other piece that may be unusual to you is the Tortillion – these are tightly rolled sticks of paper and are again an essential item to me – mine do not usually look this clean and having one side which is blackened with graphite is e

Helpful Hints On Reading and Discussing Poetry
Contest Information Below!
Hi! Welcome to projecteducate’s week on poetry forms. I’m here to talk about poetry in more general terms, which might help you with the rest of the week. As a great lover of poetry, it makes me incredibly sad when I see a comment on dA that says
I just don’t get poetry
I like this poem, but I don’t know why
I can’t possibly say anything about this poem, it’s just so much better than I could do
If you can see yourself in any of those comments, this article is for you! By the end of it, you’ll have some idea of what to think about when reading and later commenting on a poem, as well as the opportunity to win some points in a contest. Obviously no article is going to teach you “eve
dA Life #06: Dealing With AbuseWelcome to the sixth dA Life blog, a series created to help you enjoy your time on dA and use it's many tools for sharing your art, appreciating other people's art and taking part in the wonderful community that we have here.dA Life #06: Dealing With Abuse3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Sometimes at fella we get notes from deviants about things that are beyond our control, things that we as a group simply can't intervene in or fix on your behalf. One of those issues is claims of harassment and abuse. Luckily, this is something that you can often deal with yourself with the account tools that everyone on the site has at their disposal.
The purpose of this journal is to share useful information with you about how to handle issues you have with other deviants, their behaviour and their work and to make suggestions as to how you may choose to deal with these issues. Remember, you can always find lots of information about all aspects of the site and interacting with other users in the

Because deviantART is home to people aged 13-18 as well as adults, we have a Mature Content filter. dA Life #09: Browsing with Mature Content filter explains a little bit about this and shows, with screengrabs, what it's like to browse deviantART with your Mature Content filter activated. It also explains how to activate your Mature Content filter to alter your browsing experience to suit your personal preferences. dxd, one of the CEA Team, wrote an amazing journal, CEA Blog: Mature Content, which covers misconceptions about Mature Content on dA in detail. Both those journals are well wort

Getting the Most out of dA: CommentingUsually, when you read something involving 'Commenting', you think of deviations and the commenting platform that allows other members of the community to voice their thoughts and opinions on the art shown. However, what is pretty evident, and something that most of us may forget, is that deviantART runs on the ability to give and get comments, be it on pieces of artwork, our profile pages, forums, and everywhere else in between.Getting the Most out of dA: Commenting3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
In a sense, without the ability to give and get comments, deviantART wouldn't be much of a website, much less #1 of online art communities around. Comments are not solely the cause of what makes deviantART what it is, but it has a huge impact on a lot of things. By giving and getting comments, not only do we interact with other members to really make this a community, we also have the ability to get our voices heard.
It's quite an odd concept with us all facing screens, typing out our thoughts and opinions, but one thing we shouldn't forget is that commen
Deconstructing Mary Sue TestWell, two parts of my comic book are completed, and I kinda took a short break from drawing part three - mostly to think on how to construct it. So I might as well write another 'article' in my journal.Deconstructing Mary Sue Test3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Tonight, I am going to write about that one thing which turned into every modern young creator's fear, and is best described by a quote, supposedly said by Oscar Wilde:
'Every first novel is the author either as Jesus or as Faust'
Yup, that's right - It's Mary Sues and Gary Stus. If you read my older journal entries, you probably know I have certain opinion on topic, But I am not going to defend Mary Sues at all. But the problem is - With all Mary Sue tests and Mary Sue hunters there are Way too many points to declare a character a Mary Sue/Gary Stu, and half of them sound like the Hunters are deliberately mocking the creator, while believing themselves 'Perfect' in their judgment.
So in this entry, I am going to look at some of these 'Mary Sue making' points and tell you why do I belie

Username changing and you!I recently posted a forum thread here about people's thoughts on username change. I find that a lot of them would like it, but know that deviantART has openly stated that they will not transfer anyone's content over.Username changing and you!4 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Relatively recently, Xehara, a deviant who wants to change her username posted a deviantART Suggestion here which got a Daily Deviation. I was a suggester, which shows that I am in full support of this idea.
On this Suggestion, I commented the following:
"I like this suggestion, but I know that dA's thing is that they don't want to confuse people by having people's profile links broken. So, I was thinking that instead of putting your old username back open for anyone to get, you pay the fee to have it disabled and whenever someone goes to that link, it redirects to your new page (like with Skittleboi redirecting to Josh)!"

A Copyright Briefing (New Updates 3/5/13)I am not a lawyer. I do not know everything there is to know about copyright law and cannot assist you with legal matters. I have studied copyright extensively and written many DMCA Takedown Requests for myself to successfully get the illegal use of my work stopped. This article is in no way comprehensive. It does not include 100% detail on copyright laws. Copyright and "Theft"
Why sharing can be illegal.
There is quite a bit of confusion about copyright law, the DMCA, fair use, de minimus, etc. And rightly so. I always try to give people the benefit of the doubt when I come across what appears to be a "theft" issue. Even people in the United States, the home of the DMCA and one of the strongest supporters of
How to make a viking dressI used to be a part of one history reenactment group some time ago. Such groups basically reconstruct elements of daily life of people from a selected time period; my group was interested in early Middle Ages, from the 8th to the 11th century, from the Eastern and Northern Europe. Personally, I used to reconstruct a viking woman from today's Sweden areas. Most of you will be shocked, but vikings were not half-naked barbarians with horned helmets. They had no horned helmets. Really. How to make a viking dress3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Anyway, my favourite part of reenactment has always been all the suit making. Buing materials, planning, cutting, sewing (hand sewing!), embroidering. Then, wearing. Generally, viking clothes are very easy to make, though I admit that the materials aren't the cheapest, if you want to make it as much accurate historically as you can.
Our goal: a simple dress, no emboirdery. This is actually my first viking dress I've ever made.
I've prepared a simple tut
Stock and Resources Nov/Dec RoundupStock updates, HOLIDAYS!Stock and Resources Nov/Dec Roundup3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
So, the holiday season is upon us, and I am writing this from a computer that has been attacked by tinsel and other shiny things that keep distracting me!!
PirateLotus-Stock and I wish our entire stock and resources community a safe, magical and warm festive season no matter when or how you celebrate! After the recent devastating news of the killings in Connecticut its a hard reminder that family and friends can be swept away from us in the blink of an eye, so cherish them and smother them in love every chance you get. We all know that there are many out there who won't be able to, and we send you our love.
The stock community has been ticking along quite nicely the last month or so which is lovely to see, we really dislike drama affecting the stock & resources galleries and try to head it off where we can! This is a reminder to everyone that we are here to help you, n
