On character designYo!On character design2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I've had a few people ask me to make tutorials on character design, but I'll be honest:
For me character design isn't entirely an artistic thing. It combines some of my stronger ideals with artistic taste.
This makes it sort of odd to just make "a tutorial" on how to do it, as there's a lot more to it than just the art.
I'll summarise the artistic part in short: Almost any good quality character design tutorial will most likely go into things
like silhouettes, body shape, how to stylize, unique faces/facial features. If you really desperately want information on that
it's out there, google and/or the search tool are your friend.
For me I'll talk exclusively about how I try to design my own characters (mostly in my comics)
from a more philosophic standpoint, rather than just "this is how you do the arts".
I'll divide it by general areas,
This journal's subject shall be:
My characters aren't me.
This isn't as obvious as it sounds, I'm not just talking about the "

Friday Feature : WoW RefreshSo, World of Warcraft is updating its characters, and whether you play WoW or not, it's kind of a big deal.Friday Feature : WoW Refresh10 months ago in Art Features More Like This
As games age, technology moves forward. Developers can do better work faster and with a lot more wiggle room in terms of Tech requirements, and during the lifespan of a successful MMO, adjustments need to be made. Most companies in the MMO market have not lasted long enough to truly require these changes, but Blizzard has. Like them or not, they are a company that cares about consistent and coherent art. As new updates get pushed out the door, the old work starts to look worse and worse, and the overall look of the game begins to suffer. Thankfully, Blizzard has injected a bit of life into its tired old starting races.
While this update might not bring back the people who left WoW, it will certainly make the existing players a lot happier, and provide us with some inspiration for our own work.

I don’t know a huge amount about the “New 52” take on the DC universe (I stopped paying attention to DC’s output when they changed their logo to look like a half-unwrapped Acme magnet) but if the Justice League: War animation is any kind of summary, I’m glad I’ve not wasted my time.
Batman now seems to think it’s impolite if he doesn’t tell everyone who he is, Wonder Woman has taken to talking like a really, really bad Shakespearean actor and Superman is a dick.
Ignoring the animation’s terrible narrative, what struck me like a rancid kipper in the face was how god-awful the character designs were. In this instance; particularly Darkseid’s. Yeah, he wore a bucket on his head in the past, but it worked! It added to his menace as a laser-firing brick of doom. You took one look at him and you knew who he was.
Watch Superman/Batman: Apocalypse. THAT version of Darkseid is an ic

First of all I want to thank those of you who have purchased my tutorial through legitimate means. Your support has been incredible, myself and my family can't thank you enough, the notes and letters I have received from many of you in regards to the tutorial have honestly been touching and inspirational - it's been an experience unlike anything I expected to find in this business.
It is that very experience which has prompted me to come forward and lay my cards on the table and finally expose what has been transpiring behind the facade that is being presented to you by these institutions, because you deserve to know the truth for your own financial and intellectual protection.
I've waited to come forward about it because I've wanted my mo

This is it! Without further fanfare I'd like to introduce you to a project that I've been brewing with greenestreet and jeffreylai since October of last year. It's an animated micro-series focused on delivering quality action animation.
A Kickstarter for the series called "1000."
That's me speaking on the voice-over.
(Also, I'm the thinnest guy in the video. Shows how much I've been working lately...)
I'm playing the role of animation director and can definitely say that I'm nervous and excited about where this thing could go!

I believe that Minecraft is the future of massive multiplayer games, and I'm surprised that none of the big developers/publishers have cottoned onto it yet.
They look at Minecraft and think its success is down to its business model, or to its blocky, retro charm.
It's down to the fact that you get out of it what you put into it.
With a MMORPG, there are pre-scripted quests. With Minecraft, you set the quests yourself or others.
User created content is the key. All you have to do is provide the players with the tools to build.
There are two types of gamer: wall builders and wall breakers.
Wall builders are the ones that spend an age in an RTS game getting their base just right. They play SimCity and act as Dungeon Master during an RPG.
Wall breakers are the type to follow the mission brief. They get set a quest and they follow it. They're the Call of Duty crowd and they're never more happy than when

5 Tips On Fantasy ReligionsI'm not looking for a religious discussion. If someone starts one, I will rip your face off and block your comments.5 Tips On Fantasy Religions2 years ago in Personal More Like This
1. How involved a deity is affects religion. At least in fantasy, anyway. Now of course there are plenty of fantasy religions that don't bother to clear up whether a god actually exists, and the driving elements of the story or more about religion and power rather than spirituality. So considering whether god or gods actually really do exist at all in your story is a perfectly cromulent question. However, if a god does exist, and is constantly involved in the lives and well-being of its worshipers, enemies or non-believers might think twice before some serious smiting ensues. For that matter, followers of an attentive god might watch their mouths. (Look at the Greek Gods and what they did for slights!) A god may be protective, but that doesn't necessarily mean benevolent. In fact, a god or gods may have the att

Under the Stock and Resources Category is the following description.

"Computer generated stock images"
In terms of the Stock and Resources gallery, directly refers to the "rendering" of 3d digital work with the use of a render engine. Below is a little more info!
From the prepared 3D scene, rendering is the final process of creating the actual 2D image. A great example of this process can be taking a photo or filming the scene after the setup is finished in real life. Several different, and often specialized, rendering methods have been developed. These range from the distinctly non-realistic wireframe rendering through polygon-based rendering, to more advanced techniques such as: scanline rendering, ray tracing, or radiosity. Rendering may take from fractions of a sec
Fandom and OwnershipI recently saw an article where Mike Tyson is supposed to appear as a convict who was a victim of sexual abuse as a child. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/tv-column/post/nbc-moves-mike-tyson-law-and-order-svu-episode-up-a-week/2013/01/30/0dc276fe-6b34-11e2-af53-7b2b2a7510a8_blog.html . A prominent Rape activist, in talking about how sickened that she was by convicted rapist Tyson being on the show, talked about how fans like herself felt betrayed. She further when on to say that because the focus of SVU is on the victim that they feel like they OWN the show. Now, while I understand, appreciate and respect the touchiness of this subject, this woman couldn't just leave her objections to these grounds where her moral high ground does exhibit latitude. She had to approach it from a standpoint of OWNERSHIP.

Bah, I thought I was done with this... but yet here we go again.
Ubisoft apologized for a lack of diversity in their games. They then vowed to try and diversify for future games. http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/135500-Ubisoft-CEO-Says-Company-Will-Work-to-Extend-Diversity
See guys? THIS is when all that “social justice warrioring” bullshit pays off. Yes it’s kinda annoying that everyone was bitching about Ubisoft (myself included) for the past week or so... but guess what? All that bitching actually ACHIEVED something! Companies take their reputations very seriously, and noticing that they were getting a lot of shitty press means they’ll work very hard towards turning that around because no company likes to be known as the worse of anything (with the possible exception of EA).
This is also the sort of thing that I think raising a hissy fit on the internet actually works. A lot of people like to say “let the m

1. You have to say just one transformation and be clear about it, if you say more than one i will ignore it.
2. Can't be anithing too drastic. (just one transformation or several subtle ones, for example you can't ask for a full change of clothes, but you can make them more girly,
or just ask for one item to change, pants to a skirt for example... neither you cant turn him sudently into a big breasted bimbo,
but you can give him breast or make his whole body a little more femenine, you got the idea)
3. Must be something that fits my style. (meaning he wont sudently become more cartoonish or mangalike)

Stop it! Stop it! Stop it!Years and years ago, at the beginning of my illustration career, a veteran illustrator got mad at me, and at a number of my colleagues, for charging too little. We all protested loudly. "But, dude," we said, "we are not veterans like you, with years of experience and stunning portfolios to back us up. We are newbies, and we need to eat, too, so we'll take what we can get. We're not in direct competition with you, so why do you care?" Then, we added, with great smugness, "Oh, and our rates are the current industry standard, so pthbbbbbt!"Stop it! Stop it! Stop it!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Except more than a decade's gone by, and I see that my colleagues and I are now veterans, with our own pretty portfolios and lengthy CVs. We have become the indignant illustrator's direct competitors, and we're not earning that much more than we were at the start of our careers. We're certainly not getting what he did, at the height of his. And we did this to ourselves. Oh, sure, we're not solely re

Someone linked me this video after seeing my Fashion Savvy Samus comic, and it quickly became apparent that a LOT of people defending Samus’s god-awful rocket boots were using THIS as their basis for argument. So, since this is the internet, I’m gonna respond to this video interjecting whenever I hear something I agree or disagree with.
1. I agree that we should separate Other M Samus from the rest of cannon based on the fact that it was conceived over a retcon of the character.
2. I agree that a lot of the hatred for Other M Samus came from her BADLY localized English translation and voice acting. I’ve stated many times that if the game had been left in Japanese with English subtitles, I sincerely doubt as many people would’ve had a problem with her “monologuing” than they do with the English version.
3. I do not agree that you should be “offended” that mal

Sooo my experiences on DeviantART began like 7 years ago, I didn't really have an account cus I knew I was terrible at art and I knew I'd get alot of laughs for drawing chibis with french fry limbs, so I just didn't bother using Deviantart for anything other than looking for fanart of my favorite animus and vidyagames.
Then in 2010, my bro made his DeviantART account and we started using that for scopin for art cus, heh, at that point we were able to look at *ahem* questionable content. But for me, questionable content gave me the sorts of references that normal artists would have a tougher time giving you, and really honestly, I watch most of the people I watch today because of the art. I don't really care what you draw, well I do but not in the way most of your fans probably do, if you made good art, you're amazing to me and can inspire me in many ways.
So anyway, let's fast forward two years, when I only
