DO YOU KNOW THESE ARTISTS?It's been a while since i've shared some of my favorite deviants. Here's a list of talent that some of you may or may not be aware of that i've been drooling over lately. I love this place!DO YOU KNOW THESE ARTISTS?2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Check 'em out!:
:iconmonk-art: Fabian Schlaga. LEGEND. If you haven't heard of this guy, you're missing out!
:iconsaspy: Saspy's work is amazing. The female mega-talent from Italy shows no sign of slowing down with her bright and fun approaches to character design, expressions and energy.
:iconjoel27: Joel is currently my FAVORITE ARTIST on Deviantart. Just flip through his gallery and you might find yourself there all day.
:icontchokun: French Artist who worked on online games and flash shorts such as WAKFU is not to be missed. serious talent here
:iconrikkitikki: Rikkitikki's light hearted animation influence illustrations are something to fall in love with. He's got a detective concept he's been playing with that shows the main characters quite often and i usually fave when he draws th

DREAMWORKS ANIMATION LOOKING TO TRAIN STORY ARTISTS:
"The Story Initiative Program at DreamWorks Animation is a comprehensive immersion program for recent college graduates who wish to pursue artistic careers as story artists.
The objective of the program is to identify and train entry-level storytellers in the techniques and practices of storyboarding for feature-length animated films. Over the course of an initial three month curriculum, trainees are instructed by a DWA senior story artist in a training environment that replicates the production environment on actual projects. Trainees learn how to: evaluate and plan their storyboard sequences,
I'm not a real artistWARNING: This journal is highly sarcastic and ironic. Do not read it if you don't have a wicked sense of humor. Like me.I'm not a real artist3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I came to that conclusion after I read a certain blog on Tumblr called "Artist Problems". On this blog people submit their thoughts and artistic problems they encounter as artists. When I saw one of those quotes saying: 'Artist Problem #204 - When you're sketching and people start watching over your shoulder', I thought that it's pretty good and it applies to myself. So I clicked 'Follow' button as I wanted to be enlighted by witty quotes and socialize with other artists in pain.
After that the great dissapointment struck my head.
Because out of tons pictures with 'Artistic Problems' written down I browsed on that blog almost NOTHING applied to me.
At first I thought ' What a bunch of lousy losers, how can they call it a problem?' But then I saw a lots of comments under every single picture 'OMG IT'S SO TOTALLY ME', 'YES, THIS BRINGS ME SO MUCH PAIN' and then
THIS is how you use the FLASH/ ANIMATION program.By being an exceptional artist/animator FIRST. Flash is just a very limited vector-based, digital graphics program. It's just a TOOL, just like pencil and paper. It's the artists using them that bring out its quality.THIS is how you use the FLASH/ ANIMATION program.1 year ago in Personal More Like This

5 Ways to Avoid Being DiminishedThere's a discussion brewing in comics about artists being more diminished as of late--that readers, reviewers, and publishers are focusing too much on writers rather than the artists who draw the book. I agree it's happening, but I'm not sure it's worth sounding an alarm over. I never felt diminished, but maybe I'm part of the exception. Maybe it's because I'm an artist and a writer.5 Ways to Avoid Being Diminished8 months ago in Personal More Like This
Either way, I do have a few thoughts on what artists can do to pull themselves out from under the rug.
1. DON'T DRAW LIKE A COG.
If you conform to a "house style", then you're at higher risk of being treated like an interchangeable cog in the comics machine. Yes, you're more likely to get consistent work, but you won't stand out as much. Therefor you'll be sought after less by big name writers, you're less likely to make a lasting impression on reviewers and readers, and you'll have a harder time getting raises (12 others draw like you and for less money).
I also suggests inking yourself if it helps. Penc
Disneys PAPERMAN : 2D and CGI FEELSDirected by John Kahrs, Disney has just posted the complete film online. Pretty much the greatest blending of 2D/CGI compositing i've ever seen. Brings back the feel of how powerful 2D is ( when it isn't being talked down next to CGI). Brilliant stuff!Disneys PAPERMAN : 2D and CGI FEELS2 years ago in Personal More Like This

Acts of Creation Part 4WHY ARE SALES SO LOW WHEN THEY'RE MAKING SO MANY COMIC BOOK MOVIES?Acts of Creation Part 43 years ago in Personal More Like This
By Dave Elliott
Another in a series of mind boggling trips into the inner workings of the industry OR I bet you thought it was going to be more fun than this.
There is often talk of cycles in comics, how readers turn over every 3/4/5/25 years, booms and busts, everyone is leaving for Hollywood, kids don't read comics because of video games
Do you know how many are true?
Probably all of them. Twenty-odd years ago, it was the established fact that the majority of comic book readers came and went in three years. Most of the market wasn't around long enough to even notice that certain characters came back time after time.
The comic book industry has had its own share of recessions. Had its fair share of booms too. Maybe more than its fair share, fighting against nature some might say.
Hollywood has always courted the industry. Gerry Conway and Roy Thomas

Acts of Creation Part 3Editor, Managing Editor, Editor In Chief, Publisher.Acts of Creation Part 33 years ago in Personal More Like This
Different titles for different jobs, but they overlap and it's where they overlap the trouble normally comes.
I know this is a community of artists but it doesn't hurt to understand who the people are that you are approaching for work. What follows is a brief description of what each normally have to deal with on a day-to-day basis. This is by no means a complete list of their duties but are usually at the core.
EDITOR Overall they are responsible for keeping the book on a timely track while balancing the editorial requirements of the company and the abilities and desires of the creative teams.
MANAGING EDITOR These guys watch the editors and are usually responsible for their performance while at the same time having responsibilities of their own.
EDITOR IN CHIEF This is the person who usually deals directly with the publisher. Their responsibilities lie primarily with making sure the above do their jo

According to Adobe, these seemingly free downloads were/are available only for clients who had already purchased CS2 software:
For obtaining illegal copies of graphics software, that is.
What I mean?
Adobe is offering various software downloads for free - Photoshop CS2 among others!
Whoever wasn't able to afford them until now should take advantage.
You only need to register for free at the Adobe website. And probably need to set the programs to run in "Windows XP mode" if you're using a newer Windows.
I'm going to test a few of these right now! I have only Photoshop which I bought years ago, none of the others!

This is NOT directed towards people who have general opinions (go ahead, have em'). This is a response to some of the recent EXTREME attitudes that I've seen around here and Tumblr. If you don't like candid opinions, please click here. You will not be disappointed.
It's probably more in defense of TTGO than BTB, since I've seen more people grumble about that show. Teen Titans and Teen Titans Go are not the same show. Let's get that straight out. It's not a continuation, it is a variation. If you can understand that, then maybe it will be less painful for you.
Teen Titans Go may not be your cup of tea, it might irritate you, it might even make you mad. Boycotting DC Nation because you want to stick it to those CN an

Learning to Paint Digitally, Edition 1Welcome to the new news article series, Learning to Paint Digitally. Since even before I joined the AR Team I have been receiving notes, emails, etc. from fellow deviants asking me how to get started with digital painting and/or mixed media. So, along with my knowledge, and the help of tutorials and resources I hope to bring something truly valuable to those wishing to learn more about painting digitally within Photoshop.Learning to Paint Digitally, Edition 17 years ago in Art Features More Like This
I can't say how many articles will be included in this series, only that each one will be unique and should you wish to participate even more, and take it one step further there will be practice materials suggested at the end of the article, ideally I would love to see the results uploaded so that I can display them and we can see how people are improving and coming along with the help of these "lessons."
The Plan: This series is not only to give beginners a starting point, but also to help even seasoned painters with tri
Teach your clients to commission an IllustrationA great question we get from readers who enjoyed our past post regarding, The Ten Questions you should ask before you Say "Yes" to illustrating someone's children's book is, "What resource can we direct them to if they aren't sure how to answer some of the ten questions?".Teach your clients to commission an Illustration2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Luckily we found an AMAZING free resource that you can direct them to. Randy Gallegos is dropping in to share this great resource that will inform any potential client of the information they need to come up with a price, understand what rights to ask for, and explains many aspects of the publishing and art creation process and how to approach an artist correctly.

I've been getting some requests on dA and from my facebook page https://www.facebook.com/pages/Anthony-Holden-Art/176602949100531 about what sort of brushes I use in Photoshop. I put them online so anyone can easily download them. If you're interested, you can find them here https://sites.google.com/site/aholdenfilessite/home/photoshop-stuff/Anthony_Holden_Brushes.tpl?attredirects=0&d=1
EDIT: the .tpl file is for CS6. Some folks have been having issues with usability. If anyone has an idea for a work around, let me know!
EDIT #2: Here is a link to a .zip file containing the same .tpl, since it has been suggested to me that this may help https://sites.google.com/site/aholdenfilessite/home/photoshop-stuff/Anthony_Holden_Brushes.zip?attredirects=0
The Making of YOSHINARI'S LITTLE WITCH ACADEMIAFor all aspiring artists/ students who whish to work in 2D animation production, and those already in 2D animation who know little to nothing about actual 2D animation production, here is but a glimpse of what it's like. This is also a pretty brilliant program enacted by Japanese grants to nurture the talent pool for the new generation. Watch director Yoh Yoshinari (gurren Lagaan, Evangelion, FLCL) train 5 young animators at his newly founded animation company STUDIO TRIGGER (KIll LA KILL), as he guides them through the process of helping him create the first episode of the wildly popular Little Witch Academia OVA. Inspiring stuff and a true peek behind the curtain of what it's like for young artists/creatives/animators who work under a giant like Yoshinari. The Making of YOSHINARI'S LITTLE WITCH ACADEMIA7 months ago in Personal More Like This
TAD: Making It RightHere's an update about the royalties situation:TAD: Making It Right2 years ago in Personal More Like This
John English over at TAD stepped up and did the right thing by sending me a check for my royalties, which I have already received and banked.
He also gave me his word that he would be taking care of the other artists royalties who were wronged as well.
Whether that happens or not remains to be seen, but he called me not long after I made my post wanting to know what he could do.
John said he didn't think people should get credit for doing the right thing and I agreed. But I still want to take the time to flesh this out a little because I want to keep my side of the street clean and because there's a lot of confused, angry, hurt, people.
Justified or not; dropping this nuke hurt TAD and TAD isn't only populated by the people who wronged me; it's comprised of people *just like me* trying to make a living in art.
I was wronged, but TAD isn't some cartoon villain plotting to suck the life-force from hapless artists; no one goes into business
