deviantART and Offsite Proper EtiquetteKnowing Your Laws!deviantART and Offsite Proper Etiquette3 years ago in Personal More Like This
As some of the taxidermy/pelt collectors know, there’s been a recent influx in people becoming interested in collecting wildlife parts. It’s great to see people becoming interested in taxidermy and such as it’s not an art that is well known. But lately some of the taxidermy community on here has notice way too many people are selling items here and off site that are illegal in general or illegal in their state. Collecting animal parts is not like collecting baseball cards or coins, there are LAWS to them. A lot of members on deviantART don’t seem to get how serious it is if you are caught illegally selling animal parts. We’re talking about $1,000+ fines and even jail time. The federal officers don’t care if you didn’t know the laws or if you’re a kid, your still breaking the law and they will punish you. I always tell new people
The Basics of Taxidermy and Mounting.Below I will be stating my levels of knowledge for taxidermy and mounting to help out new beginners [I'm still a beginner myself, but ya'know, fresh meat.] Now I still have lots to learn! But for now, I will share what I know to help the rest of you new comers out.The Basics of Taxidermy and Mounting.3 years ago in Personal More Like This

I wanted to offer some quick resources for those who may be interested in the spiritual work I do with animal parts, since I've been talking about it again lately, and also because it's part of why I created :iconPaganRitualTools: (since the main reason I started making ritual tools and other art with animal parts in the '90's was due to spiritual, sacred reasons). There's really not that much info available on the subject; most of the people I know who have worked with animal parts in neopagan spirituality did so based on the work I've done, though some of the innovations they've made have been pretty fascinating. And other than a chapter in Patricia Telesco's and Rowan Hall's "Animal Spirit", and a few scattered articles online (like Juniper's "Dead Things on the Altar: http://nature.pagannewswirecollective.com/2011/07/24/dead-things-on-the-altar/ ), I've found very little published information on non-indigenous uses of animal

My Minecraft Testificate InfestationIn Minecraft there are these squidward like villagers called Testificates. In a recent update they were given new abilities such as having babies to repopulating a town based on the number of houses there are. Since the requirement for a "house" is simply a room with a roof and a door, I decided to spend my time building a massive city for the Testificates to populate, using a generated village as a starting point. My Minecraft Testificate Infestation3 years ago in Personal More Like This
After building a number of houses, I began noticing the little children running wild and there becoming quite a LOT of villagers. I undertook a huge task of building a BIG open area underground with a couple doors and lights. Because the area was so big, the Testificates began to... um... OVER populate.
These little buggers reproduced the village so fast that I couldn't keep up and soon they were overflowing out of buildings. Mob attacks couldn't keep up with the rate they were repopulating, and the iron golems that kept spawning (for every 15 villager a new one spawns) made

Introduction about making handmade booksINTRODUCTION ABOUT BASIC TOOLS TO MAKE HANDMADE BOOKSIntroduction about making handmade books2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Today I'd like to share with you some basic tips if you're interested in making handmade books. I've learned how to do that a few terms ago, at the university. As an art restoring adept I've been through the old, traditional ways of making books and added some modern touches to simplify that. I'm going non-professional so far, without expensive equipment, so if you'd like to give books a try you don't have to invest that much
The first and obvious thing that's needed for our book is paper. At that stage you have to decide what kind of book you'd like to make - you need lined or squared paper for notebooks, journals, cookbooks and basically everything that's meant to write in. Sketchbooks and scrapbooks require nice smooth plain paper and photo albums work best with thick and durable paper. Of course those are basics, you can use decorated paper or one suitable for

Internet Copyrights 101Since there was an app recently on Facebook which resulted in numerous copyright infringements and legal issues, I figured now would be a good time to refresh everyone on basic internet copyright rules. The other day I was sitting in class rather frustrated with everything and the people around me. I'm in a split class with grade 10's, 11's and us... the 12's, so there was about 15 minutes left in class and i had noticed this grade 11 boy glance over at me every so often.. thinking it was strange i finally exchanged a long look with him, it caught me off guard when all he did was smile at me then turned to leave. Now i've never talked to him, and i know he didn't mean anything with the smile. But the look he gave me almost said: "you look upset today but thats ok, smile with me?" So i smiled back.
That actually changed my outlook on my entire day. Something as small as some kid sharing a smile with me, It kinda made me think about how simple the whole thing was.
Sorry i'm just blabbering my feels towards the world.
Then today a little girl in my other art program was just talking about how excited she is to grow up and graduate and move out an

How to be a better artist -- My opinions.Decided to make this journal out of boredom. Please be aware these are just my opinions. How to be a better artist -- My opinions.3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I've done several of these things before and I'm not afraid to admit this either.
1.) Don't say you can't draw or you're not good enough.
Practice, practice, practice. No one becomes an artist overnight. If so, that would be silly. If your first few drawings come out looking bad, don't give up. Just keep drawing. In time, it'll get easier and you'll get better at it. NEVER expect your first drawings to come out looking like a Van Gogh -- that's too high of an expectation. They WILL be bad, trust me. But in time, they will get better and better and improve the more you practice.
Drawing classes, tutorials, and references help a ton! Seriously, they do!
My art a few years ago was SO BAD. Seriously. I'm like, ashamed of it now. Going back and looking at it, I can definitely see the improvement.
Take a look for yourself! XD
Macabre OC ContestAfter some debating, I have results!Macabre OC Contest3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
First Place: $30 USD or the equivalent in dA points
Awarded because it is incredibly, incredibly creepy to look at... I actually can't look at the picture for more than a couple of seconds before I always want to navigate away.
Second Place: $20 USD or the equivalent in dA points
The design of this creature is so cool, while also being really appealing to look at! I like that he lacks legs.
Third Place: $10 USD or the equivalent in dA points
This is super eerie and interesting to look at at the same time, one of the few that lacked a definitive human form. Worm-like creatures are always very interesting.
Some special mentions, other entries I debated against these that I also adored (they will be given a $5 or 400 DA Point honorary prize):
There were a lot of very good entries, and a wide range of macabre subjects!

RespectI'd like to take the time to talk to you all about respectRespect2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I recently read a journal where the writer asked a question "What ever happened to artists respecting other artists" and I'd like to say, I do! I respect all artists who have a respect for art and other artists, if that makes sense.
People who trace, steal, and don't credit those who deserve credit for their own hard work makes them ignorant, it makes them disrespectful to the artist and the art themselves. If you have so much pride that you can't even link back to the base you TRACED over, then I don't have respect for you. I respect people who respect others and are able to show some humility.
Not everyone is perfect, not everyone is a great artist and if your new to the art field OF COURSE you are going to reference, and there is absolutely no shame in that, we all do it, it is how you learn and grow. I believe that if you reference from a picture completely free handed, then you should be able to post the work without cr
