PAUL CEZANNE: The Bridge from Monet to Picasso
Untitled by FilledArles
January 19 marks the birthday of Paul Cezanne in 1839.
By the time of his death in 1906, he was recognized, especially by younger artists, as the genius who began his career under the tutelage of impressionist Camille Pissarro, and then went on to become the “architect” who reduced the subjects of his paintings to cylinders,

What Is Fan Fiction?
Everyday, we are inspired by movies, television, novels, and other forms of media. They engage our minds with a variety of stories and characters, their plights and triumphs, their everyday minutiae. Fan fiction authors are so enamored with these other worlds and their inhabitants that they must partake in the stories which have brought them so much enjoyment. They expand on the current universe, explain gaps in the narrative and delve into characters' motivations.
A good fan fiction (or fanfic) is more than simple borrowing another writer's characters and universe. The fan fiction author must immerse his or her readers in the story, make them believe it is a natural extension of the source material. Characters have their own mannerisms and quirks; each universe has its own history and rules that need to be followed. The fan fiction author must master the nuances of those characters and the world they inhabit (unless purposely writi
Why Paint Missing Children?A little girl I knew was abducted. Why Paint Missing Children?1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I was very affected emotionally, and when I looked around my home town in the following days, I finally noticed all of the little fliers asking for help finding missing children. ( In America there are 1,500 missing child cases open every day. The fliers are often printed on the backs of coupons and are distributed as junk-mail.)
I just began saving the fliers, and after a year had a drawer full of them: Disposable mailers with tiny monochrome photos of missing children. It didn't seem right that these faces were so small and bland.
One night, out of nowhere, I was inspired to paint a full color portrait from one of the cards. As an artist, the question was this: How does a person paint a portrait of a missing child? I could not just approach it like an illustration. I could not just go about it as if it were a polite painting.
I began by putting away my brushes. They were too smooth. Too pretty. Too controllable. Instead, I began using palette knives

to be beautiful"What happens if you fall in love with a writer?to be beautiful3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Lots of things might happen. That's the thing about writers. They're unpredictable. They might bring you eggs in bed for breakfast, or they might all but ignore you for days. They might bring you eggs in bed at three in the morning. Or they might wake you up for sex at three in the morning. Or make love at four in the afternoon. They might not sleep at all. Or they might sleep right through the alarm and forget to get you up for work. Or call you home from work to kill a spider. Or refuse to speak to you after finding out you've never seen To Kill A Mockingbird. Or spend the last of the rent money on five kinds of soap. Or sell your textbooks for cash halfway through the semester. Or leave you love notes in your pockets. Or wash you pants with Post-It notes in the pockets so your laundry comes out covered in bits of wet paper. They might cry if the Post-It notes are unread all over your pants. It's an unpredictable life.
But what happens

Actor Robin Williams Is Dead at 63 of Suspected Suicide
Aug 11, 2014, 9:36 PM ET
By LESLEY MESSER
The Oscar-winning actor and comedian Robin Williams died this morning in California. He was 63.
"At this time, the Sheriff’s Office Coroner Division suspects the death to be a suicide due to asphyxia, but a comprehensive investigation must be completed before a final determination is made," the Marin County Coroner said in a statement. "A forensic examination is currently scheduled for August 12, 2014 w
BioShock Movie (2013) - TrailerLast month brought the sad news for video game fans that the developing adaptation of Bioshock wasn't making any progress and producers, along with Irrational Games executive Ken Levine weren't clamoring to get the film off the ground unless it was going to be just right. That comes after directors like Gore Verbinski and 28 Weeks Later filmmaker Juan Carlos Fresnadillo were attached to helm the feature. However, those updates were over a year ago, and with no progress on the film, a fan decided to take the project into his own hands and craft and eerie and wholly effective teaser trailer for the video game adaptation. 5 Ruts You'd Better Not Fall Into As A Writer1. Seeking validation on the outside and getting shocked when you get critique. Validation comes from within, folks. Hard life lesson, but there you are. First of all, every artist of any kind has to learn to tell themselves they've done good work even in the face of their detractors. (One just hopes they balance it out with taking valid critique into consideration so they improve.) If you can't, you're not going to accomplish much. Second, I'm not saying that encouragement and fans and book deals aren't very nice things, but to the creative process they can be massive distractions. I read recently that a core of stillness is necessary to the creative process, and the more distracted I get, the more I understand it. I have seen entirely too many writers (and by this I mean full-grown adults who should be emotionally mature and everything) seek validation in a desperate and pathetic way, and get outraged when — gasp — someone tells them their writing could improve. New Badge? - Run Away LlamaThe staff recently mentioned the existence of a "Runaway Llama" badge as the reward for accumulating 100,000 llamas.New Badge? - Run Away Llama1 month ago in Personal More Like This
So far, no one who previously accumulated 100,000 llamas has received the badge
and there is no placeholder "??? Requires ??? Llamas" for the new badge for users who have not acquired it yet.
This badge does not appear to be real, yet. However, there is an official badge in the system because an icon does exist:
So whether this is an early April Fool's Day joke or a hint of something else yet to come is unclear.
Update: Runaway Llamas badge is achieved after collecting 25,000 Llama badges.
Pick Your Poison BrainstormingI've been thinking about a somewhat detailed scenario, Pick Your Poison, where every major ideology rules a great power, while every minor ideology gets some minor powers aligned to one of the great powers. I'm dividing the world into four blocs, with each bloc corresponding with a corner of the Political Compass test because it's a nice, neat way to arrange everything. The other major aspect of this scenario is that every state is a hellish dystopia based on the most unforgiving straw men their opposition has drawn up. Everyone's sacred cow gets thrown on the grill. If you don't have a sense of humor about this sort of thing, I suggest skipping it (or at least the parts about your blessed bovine). I'm thinking of a PoD sometime before the fall of the Soviet Union (China stays somewhat Maoist before going full crazy later) and a current year in 2115, so modernish states are front and center with sPick Your Poison Brainstorming3 months ago in Personal More Like This
