Transrealism THE NEW SCIENCE FICTION?
Transrealism was coined by writer, critic and mathematician Rudy Packer in his 1983 essay, “A Transrealist Manifesto,” as a description of a specific sort of science fiction that was emerging at that time.
This was the introduction of sci-fi elements into fic
Portrait drawing and learning materialsSome time ago I got question about how I approach portrait and face drawing. I posted about it on Tumblr, but I thought why now share my thoughts here on DA alsoPortrait drawing and learning materials7 months ago in Personal More Like This
The first thing if You want to do portraits is to know anatomy. Start with learning what is under the skin and understand how it affects the face. When You got that covered You must know how face is structured. That will give You the knowledge how to light head. Head is a cube-like object. (yea! NOT sphere!) On face we have other little cube-like object (nose).
A great exercise is to find photos of a face and draw structure lines over it.
You see clearly now? The structure of a nose, where cheeks are, forehead etc.
After doing this You will be able to create the face from a memory using these helping lines.
Like here. This is Michael Hampton exercise:
You see how everything fits thanks to the structure lines?
Drawing a face requires TONS of practice. Find thousand photo references and practice.

You must have your own, original world. The existence of this world must be clearly mentioned in the deviation description, with some sort of indication that it isn't a one-off or throwaway setting.
There are many groups for general fantasy art and OC art, but this is not one of them. We are strictly for the works of your original worlds and the characters inhabiting them. This means please do not submit art with zero connections to a world and is just on i

Dear Urban FantasyScience is not a force. It is a process by which we test and decipher the laws of the universe. If magic existed, the process of science would have uncovered and named it by now. Magic and science cannot be opposed any more than you can "oppose" the idea of the assembly line with a rock. I buy that magic might futz with technology the same way you can use that rock to smash a factory, but if that were the case, that if there were some universal force that fucked with everything that had more than three moving parts in it on a regular basis, we'd damn well know where the problems were coming from by now (this is conveniently ignoring the fact that we would have already been calling it something else entirely by now and have incorporated it into systems and, since any system or tool designed to solve problems is "technology," we'd be calling it "technology." Not "manatech" or "magitech" or anything like that. Just "technology." A spell is a type of technology just the same as a hammer orDear Urban Fantasy3 years ago in Personal More Like This

Brother Against Brother - House of Cards meets Game of Thrones meets Jericho meets The Walking Dead (without the zombies). An increasingly tyrannical United States government, under a power-hungry, Machiavellian president (a Frank Underwood expy) goes too far and does something intolerable (Canceling elections? Arresting opposition? I dunno). A popular movement, from the left, right and center, calls for the President's impeachment. Things escalate, and a protest in Washington turns into a bloodbath. The United States is plunged into a new civil war, with many military and police defecting to the rebels' side. And of course, while the rebels are united against the government, they have very different views on what should emerge from the rubble.
The show would be very gray vs. gray morally, with sympathetic and utter bastard PoV characters on both sides. PoV characters can be leaders, foo

TUTORIAL - Tips for All ArtistsHello everyone!TUTORIAL - Tips for All Artists2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I have written a tutorial like this before here. But recently I have had more thoughts about it that I decided to share. As you may have noticed, I am not a professional artist, I am a hobbyist and self-taught, and what I will expose here is what I've learnt from my own experience. Even so, I hope this tutorial will be helpful to you!
Another note: English is not my first language, so I apologize if I commit any mistakes.
Feel free to correct my grammar any time, as well as make suggestions or asking questions!
This tutorial is for every kind of artist, but sometimes I will focus more on visual artists (since it's my speciality).
I believe that everyone can be an artist, and this tutorial has not only the purpose of providing advices and tips, but also motivation for all.

2. Your Image as an Artist outside dA
3. Your Popularity
4. Your Art Process

The Hunger Games: An Accidental Statement of Protest?

That’s right, the Katniss who’s the fictional heroine of the popular dystopian sci–fi “Hunger Games” movie series. The world has changed over the last few decades in a very big way, but some are apparently unaware of it or undisturbed by the stunning ramifications.

Conquer your artblockI think every artist out here has experienced it at least one time in their career: the so called artblock. A moment of total lack of inspiration that suddenly hits you, and leaves you unable to create. Most often the solution is to just wait. Most artblocks will solve automatically with time. But there are circumstances in which an artblock doesn't automatically disappear, or when you have deadlines to catch. In that case, you might be helped by some basic tips to conquer your artblock.Conquer your artblock10 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Over the years, I've experienced an artblock (or writersblock, as they call it for fiction writers) many, many times. Most of them were short, but the longest lasted over 2 years. Most of them solved on their own. But sometimes I just needed that little bit of extra help. Therefore, I made a list with a few tips and tricks to make your artblock go away. Hopefully it'll help you as well as it did me.
Beat your fear
Most artblocks come from fear. The fear of not being able to

Miyazaki vs OtakuIn case you haven’t heard this, renowned Japanese animation icon Hayao Miyazaki was quoted as saying that the reason the anime industry is suffering is because it’s overrun with “otaku.”Miyazaki vs Otaku1 year ago in Personal More Like This
You can read the full article here: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2014-01-30/miyazaki/the-problem-with-the-anime-industry-is-it-full-of-otaku
Naturally, such a high profile artist such as Miyazaki coming down hard on Otaku has offended a lot of people and a bit of backlash has sprung up because of it. I’d like to try and reassure some of you that it’s not as bad as it might sound, and here’s why (please keep in mind this is from an American perspective).
“Otaku” in Japan is (or was) an offensive word, usually embodying the worse traits of obsessive basement dwelling collection completing socially inept geeks. It gained widespread negative connotations after the 1989 “Otaku Murders” carried out by Tsutomu Miyazaki (which are to

5 Ruts You'd Better Not Fall Into As A Writer1. Seeking validation on the outside and getting shocked when you get critique. Validation comes from within, folks. Hard life lesson, but there you are. First of all, every artist of any kind has to learn to tell themselves they've done good work even in the face of their detractors. (One just hopes they balance it out with taking valid critique into consideration so they improve.) If you can't, you're not going to accomplish much. Second, I'm not saying that encouragement and fans and book deals aren't very nice things, but to the creative process they can be massive distractions. I read recently that a core of stillness is necessary to the creative process, and the more distracted I get, the more I understand it. I have seen entirely too many writers (and by this I mean full-grown adults who should be emotionally mature and everything) seek validation in a desperate and pathetic way, and get outraged when — gasp — someone tells them their writing could improve. PAUL CEZANNE: The Bridge from Monet to Picasso
Untitled by FilledArles
January 19 marks the birthday of Paul Cezanne in 1839.
By the time of his death in 1906, he was recognized, especially by younger artists, as the genius who began his career under the tutelage of impressionist Camille Pissarro, and then went on to become the “architect” who reduced the subjects of his paintings to cylinders,

Why Paint Missing Children?A little girl I knew was abducted. Why Paint Missing Children?1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I was very affected emotionally, and when I looked around my home town in the following days, I finally noticed all of the little fliers asking for help finding missing children. ( In America there are 1,500 missing child cases open every day. The fliers are often printed on the backs of coupons and are distributed as junk-mail.)
I just began saving the fliers, and after a year had a drawer full of them: Disposable mailers with tiny monochrome photos of missing children. It didn't seem right that these faces were so small and bland.
One night, out of nowhere, I was inspired to paint a full color portrait from one of the cards. As an artist, the question was this: How does a person paint a portrait of a missing child? I could not just approach it like an illustration. I could not just go about it as if it were a polite painting.
I began by putting away my brushes. They were too smooth. Too pretty. Too controllable. Instead, I began using palette knives
A simple guide on: Commissioning an Artist. It's often not as simple as one wants it to be when both artist and client want it to be: Cost efficient, time efficient and quality efficient.A simple guide on: Commissioning an Artist.1 month ago in Personal More Like This
I've often spend my time discussing the best way to handle commissions with clients and artist friends that I came to the conclusion that clarity and understanding is key.
I will divide the guidelines I work with based on 3 commission types.
Book covers ( or illustrations)
Reading all 3 parts will give you the full scope as a lot of it applies to one another as well.
1. Reference board.
If you as a client have very specific characteristic features all set and done for your character it can be very useful for the artist if you'd make them a reference board of art and photos that portray these things.
The artist does not wish for a life story of your cha
