New lighting classI'm now teaching a second class at Schoolism. The first class is on painting accurate light and surface, where this one is about using those principles to paint more appealing and expressive lighting. Personally, I've had a lot more fun developing this class, and I honestly think it's going to be even better than the first.New lighting class1 year ago in Personal More Like This
The first class isn't technically a pre-requisite, but if you want to jump straight into this one without taking the other, you should have a solid understanding of these things:
-how different sizes of light fall over a variety of surfaces; eg. matte, shiny, translucent, etc.
-how light and surface color interact
-how different sizes and positions of light cast shadows
-how to control lighting exposure
-a good understanding of how light is scattered through atmospheric effects

5 Unanswered QuestionsA few times a week I'll get questions in the form of “notes” on dA, emails, and private messages on Twitter, but I'm sorry to say that I don't normally find the time to answer them. But I've saved the most interesting ones in hopes I'd answer them during a slow work day. That day is today.5 Unanswered Questions1 year ago in Personal More Like This
(Most of these questions are paraphrased, or a mix of two different questions.)
1. You charge way too much for commissions (between $1000-$3000 for 11x17). How do you justify that?
I agree it's a lot of money. When I first started pricing commissions so high, it was for 2 reasons: I only had time for a handful a year, and having a commission list stressed me out. I priced them high so less people would ask. Commissions are nice, but I see it as a short term money game, whereas working on creator-owned properties is more lucrative over time when you think about prints, t shirts, licensing, etc.
The work I put into a 1k commission is the same I'd put into a Batman cover. And I sell B

Here's a sample of responses I've heard from some editors over the years when I've raised practical business concerns regarding comic book publishing:
"No, we don't know exactly what books you'll be doing, but we're (insert name of big publisher) Comics, so sign exclusive with us and not (insert name of competing publisher who has titles ready for you)!"
"This is a (insert name of big writer) book! I know he's late, but just think of how many people would love to be in your shoes!"
"The page rate isn't good, but at least you'll be getting to work with (name of big superhero whom you're supposed to be a fan of)!"
"We won't fly you out or put you into a hotel, but you should come so you can sign at the booth for us! Who doesn't love signing autographs?"
What do these statements have in common? They're emotional arguments made to sidestep yo
Tip of the Day: the StruggleLearn to enjoy the struggle. Our most memorable goals we achieve in our lives are always extra special because of the many hardships we had to endure before succeeding. Those memories will be some of your fondest when you're successful. So take sometime to live in the moment and enjoy the struggle before achieving bigger and better things.Tip of the Day: the Struggle4 years ago in Personal More Like This

I figured it out from black and white.
Seconds and hours.
Maybe they had to take some time.
I know how it goes from wrong and right.
Silence and sound.
Did they ever hold each other tight
Did they ever fight
We can make it 'til the end.
Nothing can come between
Not even the Gods above
Can separate the two of us.

Saw the mistakes of up and down.

5 Career Killers“Whatever happened to that guy? The guy that drew that thing?5 Career Killers1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Comic careers are like any other career in entertainment: if you don't stay relevant and adapt to a trend, you'll eventually peak and then bottom out. But there are more things that can help end a career. Here's a list of 5 that I've been thinking about lately.
1. SOCIAL MEDIA TAKE-DOWN
The creator does something that somehow goes viral, turning his (or her) readers against him. Bad behavior at a convention, sexual harassment online, or a semi-racist Tweet made worse by bumbling attempts to correct it. Or maybe the creator gets blamed for something innocent: innocent comments taken out of context, or involvement in a controversial project that he had no say over. Whatever the case, “social media take-downs” can harm careers, leaving a permanent black mark on your career.
I imagine this one is the most common: no matter how hard you work—and no matter how much a
THREE TIPS FOR DRAWING CARSYou know that green ellipse tool that you bought in art school? Do you know how to use it for something other than oval shapes? Do you know what those "cross-hair" marks are for? And do you know how to use it for technically correct perspective drawings?THREE TIPS FOR DRAWING CARS3 years ago in Personal More Like This
TOO many comics artists don't, and it's driving me crazy. So instead of starting a blog that starts showing examples and naming names, I figured it was better to make a quick tutorial. And this isn't just for cars but also for guns, fire hydrants, and millions of other machined objects found in comics.
If you go through this and you're still stuck, please don't write to me. I'm happy to show you at a convention to make it clearer, but within a blog this is the best I can do. Check out "Perspective for Comic Artists by David Chelsea" for more.
Cars are a whole lot easier to draw if you know how to properly use perspective and ellipses. The more familiar you are with the math, the more fun it is to draw cars. Once I figured out th

Tip for Today: When to give up?Never give up just because you don't think you're good enough. We've all had our doubts in life. Successful people do not give up easily. We must prepare and prepare again, try your very hardest and then about 50% more that you didn't know you had consistently, then keep going twice as long as you ever thought you would or could. 5 Ways to Create Opportunities with Bobby Chiu5 Ways to Create Opportunities with Bobby Chiu5 Ways to Create Opportunities with Bobby Chiu5 months ago in Personal More Like This

1 - "No" really means "Not right now."
One of the most important things I’ve learned about opportunities is that the people that receive the most, and I’m counted in this, are the people that don't take no as final. We’re okay with getting a harsh no, or a few of them. When rejection happens, learn to put a smile on your face, go back, reassess, and come back with a new approach or completely new portfolio. If you know in your heart that you are willing to take ten harsh rejections without giving up, then most likely you won't have to.
2 - Don’t sit waiting for your ship to come in.
One thing I see all the time that I think is unfortunate is that many artists wait and wait for the perfect job. Here’s my advice for that, just go and do it! Just go pretend. One of the things that helped me starting out before we did Alice in Wonderland, was pretending that
