Posting a quick preview shot of Amber from Sucker Punch (I'm in Germany right now with limited internet lol).
This is my favorite shot taken by Brian Boling at San Diego Comic Con - at the Gentle Giant booth with the life-size Mech Bunny.
Security (5 of them) told me I couldn't be anywhere around the mech or the booth because of the photo traffic jam I assisted in causing, so thanks to Mark of GG for putting me on the platform with the bunny and making me an official part of their booth. I really appreciated the opportunity to hang out with the best prop imaginable for this cosplay.
The costume was made by me, I'll post construction notes soon, as well as more pics of other Sucker Punch ladies with me.

Kevin gave me photo CDs from all the cons this year so it was like an early Christmas of piccies! I really loved these portraits of Sif taken inside the Marriott at Dragoncon. The lighting was filtered through the large windows on the 10th floor, making it a nice photoshoot location admist a huge crowded convention. Also, if you squint, the background could pass for Asgard. ^_-
Costume construction notes: I made this costume for San Diego Comic Con after gathering materials and reference for several months. I love badass warrior girls and the color red, so Sif was a no brainer! I really liked her character in the comic book as well, from the fact that she grew up with Thor and trained along side him, to their on and off romance over the years, and Sif's strong, loyal and courageous nature. I used a mix of materials for the costume, from suede to leather to metallic 4-way stretch to fur and wood. I drafted patterns for all the pieces and made everything within about 3 - 4 days. The corset is steel boned, and it was fun to make arm and leg armor pieces. I also enjoyed beading the wig and making the adornments on the hips.

Jenni took us to this decrepit bridge right by a graveyard with all this graffiti and fences... really great location for a Gotham city shoot. I had to climb all the railings like an idiot while Jenni was all vixen and ladylike. We had a blast posing in these outfits, and the cold, shocked onlookers and low lighting didn't faze us a bit!

New photoshoot! I love these two pics, and how contrasting they are. The one on the left is very statuesque and staged, and the one on the right is very organic. Both were both on the same location, with the same costume, but show such different aspects of the character Dawn.

I have to admit that even after dressing up as Felicia a good dozen times in the past few years, she is still one of my absolute favorite characters to cosplay. The costume was fun to create as well but because it's white and I made it back in 2005, I really need to re-do it. A few days before the photoshoot I was hired for the second time to be the official Felicia at Capcom's Fight Club event in New York, and I remade some of the bits on the suit for that night. I'll have a new set of paws, ears and tail soon, when I find time to sew after Dragoncon. But for now it was awesome to take advantage of the studio set up Benny has to get some shots of Felicia.

Ok, I found the Bodypaint category, yay! I stuck it in Artisan Crafts before since I did spend over 10 hours making the headpiece, bracelets, sash belt and other accessories, but the painting is such a large part of the costume.
I am a huge fan of the Mummy movies and have always liked the tragically romantic lovestory of Imhotep and Anck-su-namun. I watch all of those movies often while I'm working on costumes. A few months ago while re-watching the first movie, I thought of Dragoncon 2008 coming up and what a perfect opportunity it would be to do the bodypaint of Anck-su-namun at that event. Looking at the footage, it seems eady enough, just very time consuming.The accessories she wears in that scene are also right up my alley with the beading and the Eqyptian theme. I got really excited to do the costume after talking to some bodypaint friends of ours who were interested in painting me up like that. Sadly they were not able to make it to Dragoncon, but Brian and our friend Patterson, who runs www.savethemummy.com [link] and is just as big of a Mummy-geek as I am, stepped up and painted me instead!
Construction notes: Of course most of this costume is the painting. It took 6 hours, and that was with us preparing ahead of time. We used Mehron gold to cover my body and Ben Nye waterbased black for the designs. Brian and Patterson followed the reference very carefully and we tried to get all the lines and patterns right, down to the correct number of stripes on my legs and arms, and the neck piece. I can't thank these two enough for helping me! I imagined in my mind that Anck-su-namun would be gilded, the more to be un-touchable by anyone but the Pharaoh, hence the gold Mehron. But the paint ended up turning out much shinier than the movie version. I think I figured out a way to do it more toned down next time, but it would have to be a really important occasion before all of us are willing to go through this long painting process again lol. I had to take two long showers to scrub off the paint afterward, and my toes were gold for a week afterward lol. All painting aside, the accessories were also vital to this outfit. I studied the references for a long time and then set out to replicate them. Because all my beading supplies were packed away for a move, I had to buy everything including beading needles, and make it all from scratch. The wrist cuffs, Horus arm bands and ankle cuffs are made of embossed and painted foamie sheets, the beaded belts, necklace and hair piece took several hours of beading, and I made the belt sashes out of a beautiful curtain material. I made the little tiny cobra out of model magic, and wore sandals instead of going barefoot to adhere to hotel policies. The only other piece of clothing I wore was a black thong, as I didn't want to appear nekkid with a tan or gold one. I did also wear pasties that were painted over and blended into the design. My wig is the same one I used for Cleopatra.
I am so happy that, with the help of my friends, I was able to do this costume. It was very strenuous and toe numbing to stand for 9 hours straight - 6 for the painting, 3 to walk around afterward - and I was really exhausted afterward, but it was all worth it. So much love and thanks to my friends who painted me and walked around with me so I didn't have to be a lonely gold statue so late at night. I posed with Patterson's "Save the Mummy Franchise" banner while in the costume, and was stalked by a a lot of photographers lol. The best compliment of that night came from the group that did the Bodypainting panel at Dragoncon, wo said to Patterson and me that we really accomplished what they were talking about in the panel, which is "dressing someone in paint".

Full body shots of the Female Wizard costume I busted butt on for Dragoncon 2010. From the video game "Granado Espada", the character design for the Wizard was the first image I saw from the game and it immediately drew me in. I've been planning to make that outfit for a few years and when I had a month to craft and sew before Dragoncon, I decided to just go for it.
This costume and the Ame-Comi Wonder Woman definitely took up most of my time in those 4 weeks. The Wizard has a lot of weird bits and pieces to the design and while looking at the reference, I kept discovering more details O_o. It was a fun and interesting project to work on but also frustrating at times. Lots of hand sewing and unconventional crafting involved, such as the necklace/choker thing, the belt thing, and the feathered sleeve caps. A lot of design elements that were simple drawn lines for the artist became time consuming hand stitching and fiddling for me, the cosplayer lol. I must have used over 20 yards of rattail trim alone on this costume lol.
I still have a few tiny details to tweak and add for a future con but it got done enough to be wearable at Dragoncon so yay.

Character: Wizard - Granado Espada Costume made and worn by me Photography by Judy Stephens
Time for another Construction Breakdown. I based this costumes off of a beautiful character design sketch: [link] I had already cosplayed the Wizard once [link] and really love the style and grace of this character. This newer design compelled to me for the intricacy of details, mermaid silhouette, and creme/black color scheme. I decided early on to make some artistic changes to this design, because I did not like the open stomach and hip exposure. Such design aspect may look nice on paper or rendered on a digital figure, but on a real person the skin exposure would have contradicted the elegant sophisticated overall design of this outfit. I wanted to make this costume look regal and opulent, not show off my belly button and hip flesh. Whenever I choose to make changes to a design, I try to be very respectful of the original designer and translate their vision to a real life version of the character. In the case of the Wizard, I chose extravagant fabrics and trims, and spared no cost on the materials. I used the most expensive fabric on my record on this costume: $100 per yard. Even the black satin serving as the skirt base was a heavy bridal satin. The creme fabric was exquisite and I couldn't have been happier with it. I drafted my own patterns and created a steel boned corset, over which a lot of details were hand stitched on. I designed and made a center applique piece in place of the open belly and matching bra cups, all embroidered free-hand on my sewing machine. Just pinning on the trims and deciding placement of each took a good day, and I had to keep walking away from it, coming back, trying it on etc. Over the corset went a bolero with those weird sleeves. I searched all over for a pleated chiffon and found a semi-sheer pleat at fabric.com finally for the sleeve petals. They were carefully measured (MATH!), cut out and fray checked, and sewn together into sleeves. I beaded glass crystals to each petal tip as well. The skirt was a fun challenge because it's an exxagerated mermaid shape with multiple tiers. I made an underskirt with a tulle petticoat (hate sewing tulle...), and underneath that I built a hoopskirt from the ground to my knees. Again, a lot of math was used to figure out the right length, diameters etc. of this set up and I had to take into account the 7 inch heels I would have to wear in order to emulate the character design's torso to legs ratio. Anyway, a lot of time later, I had an underskirt and it was time to create the tiers on the overskirt. The bottom black tier is the satin, and I made a circle skirt and the biggest applique set I ever - the snakes. Each applique is heat-n-bonded on, then satin stitched over. The larger twin snakes have an overlay of metallic net as well. I ran out of time to embellish the snakes, was going to bead on them and add crystals as well. The next tier is my awesome creme fabric, with the gorgeous scalloped edges. Over that went a black fishnet fabric that is heavily embroidered, beaded and sequined. I encased the edge in a binding to give it a finished look. My tiers are a little different from the original sketch, but I'd like to think I kept to the feel of the character while adding some interesting textures and details to the skirt, to match all the stuff that was going on with the corset/sleeves. I used the same embroidered fishnet to create the under sleeves to again have some of the same reoccurring materials in the top as well as bottom of the costume. Oh, and for the first time ever I made a bib lol. I mean, what else would you call that rounded collar thing? I was skeptical of the thing the entire time I was sewing it, but with the bolero on it looks nice and finished.
Now onto the rubber snakes on the skirt. They were a focal point in the design and I felt it needed to be accurate, in order for people to recognize this character. So I spent hours sculpting 2 mirroring snake designs out of clay, as well as a matching center piece for the top of the corset with the harlequin face on it. I then made a silicone mold and dusted it with opalescent powder, and cast the whole thing out of urethane rubber. It's an expensive process, over $150 just in materials for the mold and cast, and special urethane adhesive to attach them to my skirt. I think the finished pieces turned out great though, and give the skirt the needed dimensions.
The hat was the last piece I made. God knows why it covers her left eye. I made a pattern, then 3 bases in different sizes in Wonderflex, and covered them in matching fabrics. The hat inside is finished with a felt backing, and I hand stitched various trims on for detailing. I found creme Ostrich feathers and added white and black feathers to them to make a bouquet, which was then attached to the hat as well.
The hair style is created by pinning my Wizard wig from the other costume on my head and blending my own hair into it.
There you have it, phew. Sorry for the wall of text. It was a fun and creative process to make this costume because I took artistic liberties while sticking to the fundamentals of the character design. I loved working with the beautiful fabrics and thank all my photographers friends for taking pictures of me at Katsucon. If I figure out how to air travel with that hoop skirt, I would gladly take this costume to a West Coast con or other events in the future.

I have had this Peacock costume idea for a long time before I saved enough money to buy the feathers and materials to make it in the summer of 2007.
I kept my eye out for any fabrics that could work with this theme and ended up going on a hunt in the LA fabric district for a two-toned taffeta. what I found was gorgeous, green on one side and purple on the other. In various light the fabric changed in the shades of green, cyan, blue and purple, matching the color scheme of a peacock eye feather perfectly. I took some time sketching out silhouettes and where I wanted to used the feathers as embellishments. I ended up deciding sewing a custom patterned corset, a cropped jacket with wide sleeves and upstanding collar, and a fitted mermaid skirt that flared out at the knee. The skirt has a peacock tail attached to it in the back, in the folded up resting position. I went to a Nature Center to chase and photograph real life peacocks to gain the proper reference for how the feathers lay on the birds. I used multiple kinds of peacock feathers for this costume - several hundreds of peacock tail feathers with eyes for my tail and throughout the outfit; a number of tail swords for the beaded belt and jacket collar; and multiple yards worth of thickly overlayed peacock herl for the fanned collar of my jacket and sleeves. Each eye feather was fitted with a green Swarowski crystal before attached as embellishments to the costume itself. I debated for a while what head-accessory to create, from a retro hat to crown to feather fan, and ended up sewing a tiny hat from a made-up pattern and adding feathers to it. My wig was an old wig that I restyled and curled... I hope to do something better in the future.
