When i was a young boy, i always wanted to be a cosmonaut or a baker...Some years after, why don't i mix these two dreams in one ? So, This work is a try to represent the concept ^^ (2 versions, B/W and colors)
Halloween has to be my most favourite time of the year because it's a great excuse to go crazy. Even though Halloween originated in the UK, sadly it's not really celebrated here.
As my celebration for Halloween. I wanted to make something for the fun occasion.
When you think of plushie, you think of cute, fluffy, and cuddly, right? Heehee! so.... I wanted challenge myself! I want to make something the complete opposite! Who is better for the role than the Grim Reaper himself.
I drew the background by using charcoal and chalks to create a sinister gloomy background, the crosses on the ground are black card cutouts, and I used toy stuffing for the cloudy effects.
At the time I wanted to take a photo in a gloomy setting but the camera I had is rubbish at taking pictures in the dark.
"The Draugrnaut" is a combination of the Norse "draugr" and "juggernaut". A colossal being comprised of a horde of restless souls encased in enormous plates of armour, the Draugrnaut is a merciless destructive force that seeks to claim souls to feed its undying hunger while gaining power for each soul devoured. Its main tools of destruction are its spectral blade and swarm of seeker souls. It is capable of transforming into a vast ghostly fog for travel and is both physical and ethereal.
My first contest submission ever on DeviantArt. Took me about two weeks to complete from the initial concept sketches to Photoshop painting and editing. Since I am fairly new to digital painting I felt that there were many times when I wanted to change or redo things, or meticulously paint until I get a desired result. However, time was running short and I had to just get this done no matter what.
(Fullview is massive at 1600 pixels wide. Download will give you the full size of the image as per the contest guidelines, 3300x2550 pixels at 300 dpi. You've been warned.)
So DeviantArt is having a contest for Okami fanart, if you haven't heard. I love this game, and I've never won anything before, but it didn't hurt to try it, aye? In fact this was rather fun, I've been working on it off and on for the past week or two when I took breaks from final exams and projects.
I did my best to make it look like a painting, using fairly rough-looking brushes in photoshop and re-drawing lines over and over to get the right look for the pressure of the brush. It's a fairly simple illustration but I think the pose is pleasantly 'active' and Ammy looks as close to her in-game self as I could manage.
Probably the best fanart I've done in ages, so if I don't win, at least I have a neat new desktop background!
And yes, in the lower left, that's a very rough approximation of my first name in katakana. I apologize in advance to anyone who can read and write katakana fluently - my handwriting is probably atrocious. I merely thought it would be a neat visual touch for a piece based on a game that emulates Japanese painting and calligraphy is all. I tried my best, but if it's inaccurate, well, then there's my signature in English right next to it.
After finals, I swear I'm going to be sitting and playing this game to death, because doing this made me miss it.
