self-discovery page 8There must be a balance
Don't be overcome
You are more powerful than I
My cowardice stops the drum
Conflicted by every thought
The truth wants to play
You must seek while it hides
It is worth the wait
Don't live in the shadows
Let the light into your heart
We will meet again
So admire the true beauty of life's art
-Don't be so blind.
Open your eyes.

The sky was black as night, the stars could not shine at this time. The shadows were closing in and the silence was deafening, it drowned out the dying girl's panicked breathing. She lay bleeding and torn on the cold, wet ground. The earth was soaking in her bloodied body and she was not long for this world. Footsteps echoed in the deadly silence. They grew louder as they moved toward the shattered girl.
"I am afraid this is the end, my dear," a chilled voice whispered. The words resonated in the air. The atmosphere felt thick and heavy, and the girl felt as if she was suffocating. The demon licked his bloodstained lips and the shadows enveloped his victim.
Matthew shook awake from his nightmare. He lying on the splintered wooden floor of an old shack with only a tattered sleeping bag for comfort. A storm thundered outside, lightning lit the room, and rain pounded the old windows. The image of the demon was etched into his mind but the face was

"Matthew, I never asked you, why were you on the road in the first place?" She waited for his answer but his face fell.
"I don't really want to talk about it, it's not a happy story or anything okay," he stated with dread. She was surprised and a little disappointed. She pulled herself to his side and handed him her sketchbook with a shy smile. He looked at her confused.
She nodded, "Yeah, I should have shared it with you before, I see that now." He smiled warmly and put his arm around her.
"I don't want you to push yourself into doing something you're not ready for, are you sure you want me to look at your drawings?" Hope nodded and laid her head on Matthew's shoulder. He flipped up the cover of the sketchbook. The first drawing was that of a tree. It had a long trunk and several long branches

Matthew had read the note a million times. He could recite the poem from memory but couldn't understand what it meant. What did his brother mean he didn't understand? How did he know his parents would blame him? So many questions left unanswered. Matthew had wanted to believe what his brother said, about it not being goodbye forever, but he couldn't let himself cling to false hope. Adam's funeral had shown him reality enough. He was just thankful that his brother didn't hate him in the end, like he hated himself.
"Lies, lies, lies," The demon screamed. He was growing impatient, he needed blood. This time the young girl was alive and healthy, even in the face of a demon. Her face was confident and stubborn. The girl was the exact image of Hope except she wore a silver gown that shimmered with each movement, a shining halo rested above her caramel-colored hair and long silver wings protruded from her back. She was an angel, filled with light and hope. She stared the demon down.

"Matthew, why won't you just give up," the demon taunted, "No one can save you and you know its true. The minute you discarded that cross was the minute you broke away your protection. You let me join with you, you let darkness into your heart. The only thing keeping you from losing your soul is that wretched girl and soon she will be destroyed. Can you handle that Matthew? She'll die because of you, just like your dear brother." The demon smiled again.
"No! I'm not going to listen to you this time! Adam didn't kill himself because of me! He would never have done that! I see that now." Matthew tugged at his chains. He was in a dim room, chained to a cold floor. The only light was a lantern that glowed red in the demon's grasp.
"Oh? How do you not know that I killed him to w
Self-Discovery page 10 finaleThe first thing he saw was Hope. She was lying dead, cold and torn on the blood soaked grass. That sweet girl he had met in that storm was gone forever. She had escaped just as he had her in his grasp. He had hurt her. He had allowed the demon that lived inside him to tear the angel of the girl that he loved to shreds. He rested his hand on her cold, tear streaked face. Her eyes were open as if in horror and she lay frozen in that moment for the rest of time. His head throbbed like a beat of a drum. He couldn't help but to cry. His tears washed the blood off his worn hands. He gently placed his arms around her lifeless body and held her for one last time in the world they had met.Self-Discovery page 10 finale2 years ago in Scraps More Like This
"I am afraid this is the end, my dear," Matthew whispered into the night. Sirens blared in the distance. His old backpack was next to him again. He pulled out his brother's old gun to ended his life. The police found their corpses wrapped in each-others arms.

Hope slept just a few feet from him, her breathing light and gentle. She freed him from the nightmare before it ended, but a few seconds shy of saving him from the truth. He had to stay away from her, he knew that now they had met, it was impossible, but he had no choice. They both knew that they had a connection, it was impossible to deny for either of them but it was that link that would kill them both. He knew she was an angel, and after tonight, he knew he was a demon. He rubbed the cross around his neck until he fell asleep into darkness.
They woke in the broken shack under a grey, cloudy sky. The storm was lingering but was not finished. A fog settled over the ground giving the grounds an eerie appearance. Hope stepped outside to enjoy the morning air but it simply smelled like ash

They walked into a small wood, looking for shelter from the rain. It was falling lightly for now but by the look of the sky it was going to get worse. It was dark and they were tired from their long journey. The ground was covered in leaves and it was near impossible to navigate. Hope walked ahead but couldn't see the tree root in front of her. She tripped over it and rolled into a ditch.
"Hope! Are you okay," Matthew shouted, panicked. He rushed over to get her and found her holding her ankle, face twisted with pain. He examined her injury thoroughly. As he felt her ankle she winced.
"It looks like a break, you can't walk on it surely." He dreaded that she was in pain, but she coped with it quickly. She pulled a first-aid kit out of her pack and removed the medical wrap. She bound her injury tightly and tried to support some weight on it. Once again she winced and fell back into his arms.
"I told you, you can't walk with that i
