But is it Art?:icontechgnotic:But is it Art?3 years ago in Personal More Like This

Perhaps the eternally unanswerable question.
But definitely something to chew on...
When I first saw it, I was instantly captivated.
At first thought...
...what a brilliant example of modern pointillism! Has some unknown artist taken up the long abandoned banner of Georges
Seurat and presented us with a new manifesto championing art as points of light illuminating our waking dreams?!
OK, I see now it’s not a painting at all, so my pointillism exuberance is dashed. It’s more likely one of those photo collages
with thousands of small images being arranged to create a larger picture. That’s cool. So what’s the picture?
If I stare intently long enough, will it suddenly “emerge,” like the ones they sell on the Venice Beach Boardwalk?

What's the Journal Portal?
News, blogs, and journals have been merged into one, unifying these systems in order to make them simpler to use and more consistent in appearance and functionality. In bringing them together, now categorized as deviations, they're able to receive the same great benefits as all deviations on the deviantART network. Including the following:
Using the Journal Portal, you'll be able to look through an endless stream of content. Much like deviations, you may now flick through journals quickly. View Newest to find what's hot right now in the deviantART community, or view Popular t

The Bang Bang ClubYou have to see this movie about war photographers called “The Bang Bang Club.” For photographers, it’s a near perfect experience. The Bang Bang Club3 years ago in Personal More Like This
The way photographers are shown in films follows the way in which any profession tends to be depicted in fiction - - usually as a caricature in a single dimension useful to the dramatic license taken out by the filmmaker.
The classic 1960 Federico Fellini movie “La Dolce Vita” introduced the paparazzi to the world stage and forever established a benchmark to the public’s perception of this type of news photographer as essentially a point and shoot automoton in the service of publicists. That view stuck no matter how brilliantly Weegee worked in this idiom with his sardonic exposures.
Here are Fellini’s paparazzi:
Apparel Collection: CMYThe most difficult part of putting a piece of art on a printed surface is making sure it translates successfully. This design came about after I created a presentation for my co-workers on color theory. A lot of studying went into the lecture, and because I was presenting to deviantART staff, I wanted to make sure everything I was saying was on point. Color theory has everything to do with association -- in other words, how the colors live next to each other on the color wheel in the visual spectrum. When looking at your screen, it takes the three colors – red, green, and blue added together on a black canvas -- to make all of the colors you are seeing. But in traditional media and print technologies, it takes three other colors starting from the white canvas to make the infinitely wide gamut of hues: cyan, magenta, and yellow. In theory, mixing the three colors (referred to collectively as “CMY”) will make black, but in most cases, it makes an organic dark grey. Happy 13th birthday, and thank youToday marks deviantART's 13th birthday and a handful of us -- spyed, mccann, chris, and me -- have been on this amazing journey since pretty much day one. Thirteen years ago, most of us in that handful were just teenagers, unknowingly embarking on a time in our lives that would shape us, inspire us, and be truly thought-provoking in ways we could have never imagined. Today, I find myself so fortunate to play a role in the ongoing journey that has deviantART at the forefront of solving complex problems that affect the creative community.Happy 13th birthday, and thank you1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Throughout the years, I've met incredible people at deviantMEETs, town hall meetings, and visits to new countries -- all of which have fostered relationships and changed my life. I'm extremely grateful to have talked with every deviant who has crossed my path -- even in a note, comment, or journal. The deviantART community has flourished and prospered in the past 13 years, and we're thankful for that,
The Fractal Universe:icontechgnotic:The Fractal Universe3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Is a photograph only a record, something created by a machine? Can photography ever truly be considered art? That question seems quaint and laughable these days, but if you do a little research you will find that once upon a time it was a raging debate. Thankfully a consensus has been reached that the agency of the photographer – his or her eye and critical mind – choosing the subject and manipulating the machine (the camera that is the art instrument) is what establishes photographs as potential works of art when created by an artist-photographer. Pretty basic common sense, huh? So why then is there now a debate as to whether FRACTAL ART is truly art – or just something produced by poking patterns into a computer? Isn't it just really random e-graffiti, a fibonacci button mash?
Here we go again… Hopefully it won’t take nearly a century again before fractal art is recog

The Dead Places
The Visual Delicacy of Decay
It’s easy to think of art in terms of what is instantly pleasing to the eye, artworks which
evoke a feeling of joy and hopefulness and blissful peacefulness or ecstatic exultation.
This is the consideration of art as something that helps propel us forward through life – to out future great
deeds, our career victories, or dreams of coming big events. But there is a peak to every life. At some point all
people, and all places, and even all ideas have to begin the inevitable decline that is the other balancing half of a lifetime.
New Username Symbols: The JourneyA New Road to TravelNew Username Symbols: The Journey1 year ago in Personal More Like This
When I was first approached with the project to redesign and replace our user symbols I was naturally quite shocked. For those of us who've been part of deviantART for a long while, changing the username symbols seemed like changing the colour of the sky, or asking everyone to suddenly start walking backwards, right? It seemed like such a fundamental part of what deviantART is that it was hard to take on board. But then really, when you think about it, the old symbols were meaningless at face value. And that, my dear friends, is exactly why we set about looking at rethinking them.
Think about when you first found and joined deviantART. Did any of the symbols make sense? Did you stop and think "what is this ~ before my name and why is it there?" Maybe, but possibly you're probably like me and just kinda accepted it because that's the reality presented to you. After a while, though, you'd have seen the * and maybe even a ` or ^ an
The deviantART and Sta.sh APIsWe've launched a set of APIs for deviantART and sta.sh, some of which were previously available but yet to be documented in a central place. The deviantART and Sta.sh APIs3 years ago in Personal More Like This
What can be done with these APIs?
Embed artwork from deviantART on your website or app, get feeds of quality art based on any keyword, submit any content to sta.sh for instant sharing.
The API calls we've made available are deliberately simple but open many doors. For example, we provide the ability to update a sta.sh item that has already been submitted through to the API. That opens the possibility of creating a live link between your app's instance of the artwork and the version we host. It makes it even possible to create live deviations that are updated automatically: http://fav.me/d4aeapg This is the kind of possibility one might not consider at first glance when reading the specification.
FULL CIRCLE - dA meets MadefireWhen digital comics were first imagined we just had the web. It was a blank canvas, of course, and it was crying out to be scribbled all over, desperate to burst open the long-slumbering narrative modes we had all taken for granted and formed habits around.FULL CIRCLE - dA meets Madefire1 year ago in Personal More Like This
The questions were multiple:
- How long will it take to kick old habits? (To paraphrase Douglas Adams, when will people really stop mistaking the food for the plate?)
- What will these new mediums look like? What will the grammar be? Will we be participants, or passive watchers?
- How will we build them? Flash? After-effects? What?
- How do we stop the pirates if it’s a basic PDF reader?
- How will we reach people, and how will it make any money?
- Can we do it like Spotify or Pandora, and have it supported by advertising, giving everybody the content for free?
These were things Ben Wolstenholme and I were wrestling with when we first started talking about Madefire several years ago. Other pioneers had faced boldly into these

OBJECTIVE: SELL THIS DAMN BOOK, DANNY.
At first, Gabriel was nothing more than a character named ONE. He had no backstory, no face, nothing. I just wanted to create a character that was a badass, yet with a sense of humor.
I was inspired by such characters as Boba Fett, Wolverine, Deadpool and Clint Eastwood from The Man With No Name trilogy. I needed to create something that fit that build, however, I'll admit, it wasn't intended at first.
I uploaded him on December 8th, 2008, (which, you can find here: http://danluvisiart.deviantart.com/art/GABRIEL-107612010?q=gallery%3Adanluvisiart%2F7848546&qo=50) and he became one of the most popular characters of the series, if not, the most. Soon I started finding him on forums, websites, fashion blogs (what?), and more.
But what hit me so hard was that the majority of the comments rela
