I made a poll to enquire about whether you would like to have the deadline extended for the contest... and so far (at the time of this update) I have 4 people saying that they would like a deadline extension and 5 people saying that they would find it unfair if there was a deadline extension (I was aware that this opinion might be issued, hence why it was included in the poll).
Sooo... ermm... I'm not really sure what to do here with an alllllllmost (almost) 50/50 opinion, as I really don't want to be unfair to anyone. Obviously there was one more person voting negatively than positively, but the numbers are so small that I don't want to let down any individual voters. I was going to extend the deadline an extra week, but I don't want to be unfair to the people who voted negatively, so I'm going to compromise (... sort of) and extend the deadline by only 48 hours, and also suggest that you submit even unfinished work so that I can see it. :
Contest: Fan Art NouveauHello, everyone! It's time for another Fan Art contest. This time, we're asking participants to create Fan Art in Art Nouveau style.Contest: Fan Art Nouveau3 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
What is Art Nouveau?
"Art Nouveau (French pronunciation: [aʁ nuvo], Anglicised to /ˈɑːrt nuːˈvoʊ/) or Jugendstil is an international philosophy and style of art, architecture and applied art—especially the decorative arts—that was most popular during 1890–1910. English uses the French name Art nouveau ("new art"), but the style has many different names in other countries. A reaction to academic art of the 19th century, it was inspired by natural forms and structures, not only in flowers and plants, but also in curved lines. Architects tried to harmonize with the natural environment.
Art Nouveau is considered a "total" art style, embracing architecture, graphic art, interior design, and most of the decorative arts including jewellery, furniture, textiles, household sil

Maybe some answers would seem false or inflated, it might seem sincere, many people may not understand, or might resonate with what I feel ...
Why love Romania, Selina?
I love Romania, because here I was born and here I have roots that nobody could relocate, because here I fell in love for the first time, because here I buried my parents, because here I first smelled the roses, because here I saw first painting and because here, I understand every color of every syllable uttered.
I love Romania, with her good and bad Romanians, with her poverty and wealth, with her struggles and injustices, with victories and defeats, with written words and silence, I love Romania because here I'm home and in my home, all the walls love me.
Happy Anniversary Romania! :icondarkmarek:

FAQ! Finally!Hello everybody!FAQ! Finally!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I've been getting an increase in notes and messages lately asking all kinds of things. Problem is, I'm far from having the time to answer all these questions individually (even if I did have it it would probably make more sense to spend it drawing), but I don't want to leave them unanswered either since I appreciate everyone's feedback a lot. So I decided to make a kind of FAQ, since I'm mostly being asked the same things over and over.
I'll try to group these semantically so reading though them makes a bit of sense.
Did you ever do any tutorials?
- Yes, I spent a lot of time on this one:
There's a lot of explaining in there, so please before you ask anything technique or learning related, read it thoroughly first.
I also have a ton of step-by-steps in this folder here: http://algenpfleger.deviantart.com/gallery/8622578
And I also uploaded a ton of layered Photoshop files: http://algenpfleger.deviantart.com/gallery/28996547

Below you'll find a list of tutorials I personally think of as the best on dA. If I have any problems with painting something I usually take a look at one of those.
Is there anything you're having troubles with? Need help looking for a good tutorial? Or maybe you'd like to see a video walk-through of me painting something?
I'm open for suggestions for what kind of tutorial/walk-through you'd like to see from me. If you're interested in anything, post your suggestions in the comments!

Character Design: An introductionCharacter Design: An introduction1 year ago in Art Features More Like This
Arvalis-2012 by arvalis
What does 'Character Design' mean?
The character design is the process which comes after the characterisation and consists in defining the character through his/her physical appearance.
We need to consider a character as a little fictional creature, human or not, that aims to please its creator and the public as well.
While the basic characterization of this fictional creature (his tastes, his fears, his behaviors) may take a little mental effort, as it is a sort of list of emotions, facts and feelings that come and go in the life of a character, the process of visual realization of this creature may not be as simple. That's why many writers and characters creators prefer to rely on experienced hands.
Also many of the mental aspects of the character are not possible to gain by using 'static' visual medium. For 'static' I mean all the illustrations and drawings unable to tell a
The Solution to CS5 Random Pen PressureThe Solution to CS5 Random Pen Pressure4 years ago in Personal More Like This
Okay as regards to the pen pressure problem, I've found out a few things. In case this helps anyone else who has this problem with CS5 (or previous versions) or for the future. Here they are ...
The one that worked for me came from Wacom through the forums and this was their suggestion:
"I would open the tablet properties panel, click on About/Info and then on 'diagnose' and check the pressure reported from the pen. If it looks ok and pressure is not intermediate, run the 'tablet preference utility'' from Windows Start menu -> Wacom Tablet and remove the curr

Can I also say something unrelated.. I think dA should really upgrade this journal thing with an easy image uploader function? so I don't have to upload in another database and imgsrc every photo in here. After all, having pictures in a journal is one of the few attractions and entitlement to a paid subscriber besides a customize journal, right?
Ok that aside D:
I used many unorthodox ways to do my costumes so hmm.. please don't laugh orz ...
So i bought a straw bowler hat from Daiso (for only SG$2), and then wrapped strips of paper around it until is all covered, like a half sphere but fuglier. Please use black coloured paper. And of course, please buy a hat accordingly to your head proportion. Don't repeat the mistake of making it too big like mine =_=
This is how the underside looks like. I arrowed a wire-comb there because it is how I secured this blob to the main wig late
#89: Frequently Asked QuestionsOk guys, I think it's time to do a little FAQ, because I read the same questions over and over.#89: Frequently Asked Questions2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Let me see if it's useful for somebody.
OMG, what is this?
It's a fractal, baby!
What is a fractal?
It's a really difficult question to answer, but I'll try to keep it as simple as I can. So, fellow fractalists, if you're reading, I won't be that precise in answering.
Wikipedia says: "A fractal is a mathematical set that has a fractal dimension that usually exceeds its topological dimension and may fall between the integers."
Wait, what? I didn't even understand myself.
Ok, a fractal is basically the repetition of a same "image". This image can be repeated with its original dimension or fractal dimension (it can be resized).
For example, let's pick the Romanesco Broccoli (the image is from Wikipedia):
As you can see, it's a repetition of the same "peaks" over and over, each of them with diffe

I'm Not A Social Butterfly......well, anymore. But I'm not an introvert, either.I'm Not A Social Butterfly...10 months ago in Personal More Like This
Most of my IRL close acquaintances and friends always ask me "Rob, why you work so much? Why don't you go out with us like you used to?" "Man, we used to hoop all the time dude, when are we getting back to the court?"
My response usually consists of "I... just got things to do." And I do. I'm practically at the computer almost 18 hours a day, hacking away at the game. When my wife gets home, I spend a couple hours with her until she goes to sleep, and then I finish up whatever work until I hit the sack.
Then they'd be the ones to go on how much they hate their job. Actually, its pretty funny: One of my closest dudes has an artistic background in music. He could be killing it in the indie scene even; he's a very talented dude. But man, he's dealing with chick-o-drama, always spending his free time (now on GTA5) playing games or going to the bar, and then have the audacity to go on how much he hate his jo

Best way to record yourself drawing digitallyUpdate: Added section about CONVERTING video sessions below.Best way to record yourself drawing digitally3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Quick bit of help here, because I'm not sure if everyone knows the best way to handle this if you want to record your progress while drawing in Photoshop, Manga Studio, Painter, whatever.
IF YOU ARE USING WINDOWSYou may have tried some of the screen recorders out there like CamStudio, FRAPS, or some free ones out there. You may have noticed, or had become frustrated with, the fact that many of these programs cause a significantly huge hit on your system's performance. When you try drawing in Photoshop, your tablet response comes to a screeching halt. Then you find a program that records without impacting your drawing performance -- only to find that the resulting video recorded at about 1 frame every 3 seconds. Then you tried FRAPS, then found out that 4 minutes of video resulted in a 3.2GB file. All of these are less than ideal.
A while back, I searched all over the net for a program that encoded video from my screen
Don't Go to art school!I've been seeing this around the DA journals all day, and it sounds like my kind of journal! It's written by an extremely talented environment artist named Noah Bradley. Don't go to art school
The traditional approach is failing us. It's time for a change.
I'VE HAD IT.
I will no longer encourage aspiring artists to attend art school. I just won't do it. Unless you're given a full ride scholarship (or have parents with money to burn), attending art school is a waste of your money.
I have a diploma from the best public art school in the nation. Prior to that I attended the best private art school in the nation. I'm not some flaky, disgruntled art graduate, either. I have a quite successful career, thankyouverymuch.
But I am s

5 Comic Book Truths (that I don't think are true)There are lots of tips, chestnuts, and other pieces of advice that I've heard over the years--tidbits of wisdom passed on from one generation to the next, from professional to professor to prospective student. Some of them are drawing tips, some of them are tricks to dealing with publishers, and some are general guidelines on how to survive in comics. Most of them are useful and true and will stand the test of time, but a few of them have become hackneyed platitudes and have gone unquestioned for too long. Here are 5 that I'm questioning...5 Comic Book Truths (that I don't think are true)7 months ago in Personal More Like This
1. READERS WILL ONLY LOOK AT A PANEL FOR 5 SECONDS, SO DON'T SWEAT IT TOO MUCH.
I understand the intention of this bit of wisdom, and I mostly agree with it: drawing great interiors is important, but at the same time, you don't want to get bogged down with small details that most readers won't even notice.
But here's my concern with this: if you treat every panel like it's disposable, then you're less likely to make an impact with reader
An easy wire-wrapping tutorialWhen it comes to making jewerly, especially silver, wire-wrapping technique is one of the nicest consider the availability and costs of the materials (it definitely beats Art Clay Silver at these points). But before you get silver wire and start making such fabulous pieces like the ones I've featured in the end, it's good to take your first steps using something cheaper - and here comes the copper wire - and making something simpler, to get used to this lovely technique. An easy wire-wrapping tutorial2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
This tutorial I originally posted on my blog a couple of months ago and I thought about sharing it also here.
This is what we're planning to get.
First of all, we need stones - the more regular they are, the better. No need to think about any super duper expensive ones now (: I collected most of them in my garden, there are also parts of my old broken earrings and a small glass ball. We also need sharp pincers, round pincers and a wire, 0.6mm or thicker, 40cm at least. Copper wire i
