Friendship is Magic: a ReviewNostalgia can be a funny thing it's the sort of emotional impulse that makes a man do crazy things. Things like purchasing the "Sonic Underground" box-set, simply because I enjoyed it as a kid. But there's something inherently disappointing about nostalgia; the realisation that these experiences often remain a part of our childhood for a reason. Watching "Sonic Underground" as a 19-year old is a very different experience to watching it as a youngster on Saturday mornings. The once beloved show now appears to me as a train-wreck of embarrassing musical montages, repetitive pacing and rather dated animation. Getting old is no fun when it brings out the critic within.
Thankfully, I have re-ignited that joyous spark of infancy after watching "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic"; a show that for me is not mired by any form of nostalgic bias. After all, prior to "Friendship is Magic" I'd never even considered watching anything related to the My Little Pony franchise. Having watched s
Rarity Character ReviewAt times it seems as if the character of Rarity in "Friendship is Magic" is unfairly treated. Some accuse her of being self-obsessed and shallow, whilst others contend that she is their least favourite pony. And sure, Rarity may not be the most adorable of ponies, but this does not mean that she doesn't have an appeal entirely of her own. Fans are rightly divided when it comes to Rarity, but few could deny the maturity and elegance that she conveys at every opportunity.Rarity Character Review4 years ago in Reviews & Guides More Like This
Her obsession with fashion and looking appealing can be both blatant and subtle. At times, such as in "A Bird in the Hoof" Rarity is seen leaving the party whilst demanding that other ponies remain away from her, as to prevent her dress from getting touched by their dirty hooves. Similarly, in "Dragonshy" Rarity packs an extra scarf, presumably because, regardless of the situation, she wishes to look good. These are just two examples of Rarity at her most extreme, but they are by no means the only situations where Rarit
Rainbow Dash Character ReviewBold, brave, daring and tenacious...these are words that one would usually associate with Rainbow Dash in "Friendship is Magic". But how about adorable, innocent and, at times, insecure? Rainbow Dash may be the sporty member of the group and the most tomboyish female within the mane cast, but this does not detract from the fact that, like every other pony, she has a multi-layered personality that allows her to express all sorts of emotions, both positive and negative. Some are naturally the sort of temperaments that one would normally match Rainbow Dash with, but it would be a great injustice to merely suggest that Rainbow Dash is concerned with competitions and little else.Rainbow Dash Character Review4 years ago in Reviews & Guides More Like This
Of course, there are competitive elements in her personality. It is revealed early into the series that she and Applejack, although good friends, are also rivals. In "Fall Weather Friends" this is evidenced well, wherein Rainbow Dash and Applejack face off against one another during the Running of the Leaves, but t
Pinkie Pie Character ReviewTrue story when I first decided to write this review, it was simply going to read, "She's just being Pinkie Pie", as I felt that this would be the perfect way to summarise her detailed and intricate character. But then I figured that that would be taking the easy way out, and thus decided to write a full-size review for Pinkie Pie. After all, she deserves just as much analysis as every other character within the mane cast, even if trying to rationalise Pinkie Pie's behaviour is something of an impossible task at times.Pinkie Pie Character Review4 years ago in Reviews & Guides More Like This
Pinkie Pie is the sort of character that makes a fan-base. Whereas some characters rightfully deliver their own iconic lines and meme-worthy phrases, Pinkie Pie is in a league of her own. This is because her character is noticeably different from the rest of the mane cast, placing her in a position almost outside of the usual narrative of "Friendship is Magic". She can be a narrator for events outside of her control; she can break the fourth wall with glances to t

"There you go, Mr. Badger. You make sure you stay off that paw now." Fluttershy told the small critter in front of her, one hoof holding up a bandaged paw while the other carefully stroked it's back. The badger gave a grumpy growl in response.
"Now now, it was her vegetable garden after all. If you're ever hungry, come see me, okay?" Fluttershy responded, patient as ever. She gave the badger back his paw and the creature wandered off. Fluttershy smiled and looked around. Today was just a perfect day in her mind. The sun had warmed the hill she sat on, making it all the more comfortable as she tended to the creatures that came to her for aid. She preferred to tend to them in her hut, where she could thoroughly clean and care for any wound or problem, but many wild animals weren't all that comfortable indoors, and she did her best to accommodate them.
However, her next visitor was no small critter. A cloaked figure emerged from the Everfree forest, turning to Fluttershy once sh

Eight months ago, those words would have sent me and half the internet fleeing in terror. It used to be the antithesis of everything we thought was 'cool'. It was a sugar-coated, diabetes-inducing parade of gumdrops and buttercups. It was what our little sisters watched on Saturday mornings while we were busy gagging ourselves at the 'girlieness' of it. But, in those eight months, a revolution has happened. That revolution has revolved around a single lesson.
Friendship is Magic.
Tack those three words onto the previous three, and you have the bait to a brilliant /co/ war, a revitalization of an entire section on fanfiction.net, and the origin of a whole host of reverse-anthro fanart. But, it is the single most bizarre reversal of thought since the homosexual revolution. Suddenly, it's OK to go into McDonalds and get the girl's Happy Meal. It
Twilight Sparkle Char. ReviewI'll let you in on a little secret: Twilight Sparkle is one of my favourite protagonists ever. Her combination of intelligence and academic prowess are an inspiration to both younger and older viewers, but there's so much to Twilight's character that makes her more than just the usual studious type of character. Although other ponies, such as Rainbow Dash, may perceive Twilight to be an egg-head who would never be able to do something sporty, such as win a race, Twilight wears her intellect firmly on her hooves and proves that just because you care about succeeding and learning, you can still be an awesome pony to hang around with. Not that this would be assumed if we judged her simply based on the Pilot, however; it takes a while for her strengths to show themselves, but soon enough it becomes very easy to love everything that Twilight embodies.Twilight Sparkle Char. She panted, heart pounding as she stood in the center of town. She could hear the blood coursing through the veins in her ears, sounding like the roar of a distant ocean. Her mind was numb, barely registering where she was or that she was covered with a sticky red substance, the pungent scent of copper filling the air. Her eyes slowly fell to an object on the ground: a stained knife that glinted in the midday sun. Next to it was a growing red pool. Her eyes trained on the pool and slowly moved to its source.
The deed had been done.
Luna's Moon hung high above Equestria, its gentle rays bathing the countryside in an eerie glow as it slowly trekked across the cobalt-hued sky. Near Ponyville, the light illuminated a lone figure winging somewhat less gracefully than normal above the town. It was very late and she was exhausted, but Rainbow Dash didn't ca
Allegrezza - Part Three+One merit Octavia had to give to Buck Daniels, was that it slowly washed away any capability she had for tasting, until she no longer grimaced with each sip. In fact, she even gained the courage to move up to, 'slugging,' the drink, not that she'd ever be caught dead using that phrase. It was after several on-the-house glasses, from an unknown benefactor, that she found herself lacking the co-ordination to even pick up the glasses anymore. Her teeth simply failing to gain purchase on the sides. Upon blearily inspecting the two glass-mirages in front of her, she noted that instead of the stout glasses she had been given all night, she was instead looking at a slender, flute-like glass. A unicorn glass, for the only non-unicorn musician in the business. Terrific.Allegrezza - Part Three+4 years ago in Short Stories More Like This

They visited for only a short while, whispering heartfelt congratulations and blessings on the infant foal, before Cabbage Leaf and Granny Smith shooed everyone out so the little family could take their rest.
Windfall was wrapped in a soft blanket and laid in a beautiful crib that the younger Apple sister had constructed out of the family's namesake wood, the fragrant planks sanded to such smoothness that they felt like silk to the hoof. Apple Bloom beamed with pride to see her niece nestle in with another precious sigh, as Applejack smiled and ruffled her little sister's mane.
Big Macintosh and Fluttershy climbed back onto the bed together after the lights in the room were lowered, sharing a kiss as Granny Smith gently closed the door.
The aged matriarch of the Apple Clan said her thanks to Cabbage Leaf and slipped her a bag of bits, that the stocky earth pony in turn cheerfully split between herself, Nurse Redheart, and Zecora. Their business concluded, the midwife, herbali
Allegrezza - Part SixteenVinyl finally managed to dislodge the treacherous treat from her trachea with a fit of heaving coughs, aided by Bonbon's frantic hoof patting her back to help her along. She had to admit, she was glad the cupcake had been ejected before somepony started the Hooflich Maneuver on her. Bonbon leaned back from her vigorous back patting, glancing at the tray before setting it out of both their reaches. "No problem at all. Sorry if I shocked you."
Her breathing had improved, but the blushing only increased. "Shocked? I'm not shocked, I'm cool with fiillyfo-with being with mares and all, it's okay. Just that yeh, I didn't know you could actually marry another mare."
Bonbon giggled into her hoof, her beige cheeks lighting up slightly. She was especially quick
The Return of Harmony ReviewDiscord, wielder of chaos and wanton destruction, is the new villain in town in Episode 1 and 2 of the second season of "Friendship is Magic", and, after being unsealed from the statue that has kept him at bay for hundreds of years, it is once again up to Twilight Sparkle and her many friends to deal with the incoming threat. Of course, after amassing such an enormous fan-base of unprecedented fans of all ages, there was a lot of concern amongst fans about what Season 2 might be like, given the high quality of the first season. With expectations to live up to, the show would have to pull something excellent out of the bag for these first two episodes, as they herald the future of a show that has become a beloved aspect of people's daily lives. The Return of Harmony Review4 years ago in Reviews & Guides More Like This

Allegrezza - Part Two+Octavia heard the late-night bar long before she even laid eyes on it. It was exactly what she expected to be open at such a late time in the night. The dull thud of the bass reminded Octavia of a Pilohippus banging rocks together, and probably carried the same calibre of musical finesse with it. She spotted a young colt pointing a hoof at her as she waited outside, his friends chuckling amongst themselves. They had absolutely no chance of being let in; manes spiked with gel, hoofs shod with trainers, and dressed in trashy tracksuits that Octavia imagined must be really, 'hip,' with these types of vagrants.Allegrezza - Part Two+4 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
Octavia herself, on the other hoof, had no issues with entry. She casually trotted to the bouncers attending the door, smiling and bowing her head slightly. Caramel shared the love seat with Pinkie Pie, gamely trying to sip his coffee or take a bite of a pfeffernusse without spilling or getting crumbs all over due to his fiancee's relentless oscillations.
The pink mare herself was looking a tad green around the gills, and was uncharacteristically uninterested in any of the apple based baked goods freely on tap in the kitchen.
Rarity huddled on the couch wrapped in a rustic quilt, her mane bound up in a red and white checked towel, a cup of tea cooling on a barrel converted into an end table next to her. She was looking a bit peaked herself, her deep blue eyes never settling for long on any particular point in the room, although whether it was from her recent ordeal or simply from being immersed up to her horn in the Apple family's down home country decor she declined to say.
Allegrezza - Part EighteenVinyl had, true to her word, spent the intervening time between Octavia's departure and subsequent arrival eating roughly half her body mass in chocolate fondue treats. It had essentially culminated in a conveyor-belt like motion with the waiter simply depositing a pile of marshmallows, fruit and sweets next to the fountain, and leaving her to it. She was in the very careful process of levitating a stick made of three skewers held together by marshmallows coating every millimetre of it's length into the cascading confectionery goodness. It was in this precise zone of concentration that rarely came to Vinyl, that Octavia found her. Or, more accurately, Octavia sidelined in her a full-body-tackle-come-crushing-hug. "There ya go, Tank," Dash said affectionately as she settled the tortoise down in his new enclosure. "I know it's not as big as Fluttershy's yard, but it's only for nighttime or when I'm on a trip. I'll make sure to let you out every morning before I go on weather patrol."
Tank turned his head and gave his mistress a smile, albeit both at an exceedingly slow pace. Despite her love of speed, Dash couldn't help but smile in return as she took a step back to admire the space she'd managed to set up in her house. Despite what most ponies thought, pegasi could and did have items in their houses other than clouds, albeit most of it had to be enchanted to stay supported by the otherwise immaterial vapor. Rainbow had spent some of her hard earned savings on such items as well, including the twenty-five square foot enclosure for her new pet would live in.

She supposed it would be best to keep a pretense of enjoying the show, even if only to stop Bonbon asking more questions of her. The little, green unicorn stood on her hindlegs, holding the lyre in her forelegs. Strange that a unicorn would want to play by hoof, not by horn. Her piqued curiosity held her attention right up until Octavia poked her in the shoulder.
"Hey! What...why are you here? You're meant to be in the backstage bit."
Octavia idly twiddled her hooves, staring at the floor. "Well, I was just wondering if you wanted to come back there and wait with me." Vinyl's eyebrows disappeared into her mane. "They...they refilled the buffet...if you'd like some more?"

His stomach rumbled a bit, and he glanced at the somnolently ticking grandfather clock that stood by the door, noticing that Princess Celestia's beaming portrait on the dial had been replaced by Princess Luna's shyly smiling visage.
As the comic book he read wrapped up on a cliffhanger, he began to mutter petulantly under his breath. "Is this it for our hero? Will Thunderdragon ever... eat... again... Will the nefari

It must be said that she had never awoken upside-down on her own couch before. Octavia was genuinely unaware whether the pounding in her head was the alcohol permeating her blood, or the blood itself collecting in her head. Her head itself lolled over the edge of the couch in as graceless a way as could be imagined.
She shifted her body, trying to at least get the ceiling to go back to where it belonged, and return is space to the floor. This turned out to be more difficult than she had imagined, as her drunken self had apparently managed to delicately balance herself in this precarious position. A balance that was lightly stolen away as she moved, and fell head first onto the carpet, the rest of her body joining its leader in a crumpled mass above it.

"Sorta, got any Cheerileeos?"
"I have pancakes. Will pancakes do?"
"Only if they're the big, flat pancakes. Not those little, fat dumpy ones."

As the first rays from the rising sun began to shine on Ponyville, Rainbow Dash walked somberly up the dirt path towards the town, her Wonderbolt hoodie snug around her body as the crisp morning air moved past. She was still very conflicted inside; Applejack was right. Pinkie and her victims were no more, and that was why she wasn't quite sure how to deal with that feeling. Was she supposed to talk to someone? Just wait for everything to feel...right?
As she came into the first parts of town, she passed a turquoise unicorn sitting on a bench. She was holding something small in her hooves, and she looked as if she was quivering. Rainbow came closer, and realized she had seen this pony around town before.
"Hey there. Lyra, was it? How're you doing?"
Lyra looked up at Rainbow, with golden, watery eyes.

Vinyl watched from the living room, as the silence from the kitchen signalled the fact that Octavia was in fact not making tea, and may or may not be having a mental breakdown and stuffing her head in the oven. While Vinyl was partially worried, she didn't want to intrude in on her, mainly because her hopes might have been shattered, and she would've just found Octavia moping around next to the mop pail. From what she could see, it looked like a tornado had blown through the little store, with shelves and bins toppled and every little bit of merchandise scattered and piled on the floor among a veritable birds nest of unspooled thread and ribbons.
At the center of it all, the huddled form of an earth pony mare sat with her back to the window, her brown mane unbound and tangled, her tail unbraided and in disarray. Her shoulders shook, and Rarity could hear her whimpering.
