I had the opportunity to take photos of Hiroshi, a world reknown violin maker. When I found out that I would be shooting him, this is the first image that sprung to mind. Each instrument takes years to complete from commission to final product. And each piece is like a baby that he nurtures and then sends out into the world with a life of its own. I asked him to take this pose and i did not even have to ask him to have a calm and peaceful look...that was his natural inclination.....as if he was praying over his work. Incidentally, this is actually a viola....for it is a bit bigger, therefore just a bit more visually impacting.
The start of a series about roles and their inextricability from identity.
