Things to Avoid When Making ComicsOr, Things That Really Annoy Crowbar
Edit April 16: Given recent comments, it's come to my attention that the tone I've used is too derogatory and using others' work as examples was a huge mistake. I've rewritten it to be what I hope is more constructive, and removed the examples (since half were missing anyway). My intention with the examples was only to provide example of that one element, not to completely defame the authors or insinuate their entire comic is shit. All the examples had good and bad to them, but the focus of this write-up is the bad. [/edit]
The majority of these issues are things I see in OCT entries and could be easily avoided and/or improved on. Please be aware that these are things I find issue in, and some points may be more subjective than others. For most points, I've explained why I think it's wrong, what can be done to fix it, and how it can be made to work well. Above all, think about how each element of your comic impacts the narrative and
What Makes a Good AuditionThis is a guide to writing for OCTs. Every medium and genre of writing is unique and should be approached in a different way, but if you keep the following things in mind when you write for OCTs your audition and character will come across much stronger and be more likely considered for a roster position. What Makes a Good Audition5 years ago in Writing More Like This
Judges and your general audience alike are typically looking for three major factors when they read your audition: Interesting Characters, A Unique Plot, and Clarity of Storytelling. If your audition does not excel in at least one of these areas you will almost certainly be looked over when it comes time for judging no matter how slick and professional your art is.
I firmly believe that there is no such thing as a bad character. Any character, if presented well, can be interesting--be they Human, alien, psychotic, or cliché.
The trick you need to employ is treating the character in a way that supp

Ive been in art tournaments of the DeviantART sort for a while, observing, competing and administrating ever since July 07. Doesnt sound like much, but I am assured by my friends that this makes me at the very least a Veteran in the Tournament scene. So! With that in mind, Id like to take this opportunity to bitch and whine about problems with tournaments Ive seen, and to praise to the high heavens innovation and whatnot in the various tournies that pop up from time to time. This is mainly to do with Tournament establishment and administration; have a gander if you like.

This should be self-evident. Obviously, your judges in particular should be totally free from bias, and preferably people known in the tournament s
Event 4 - Snowflake Gifts: I have a proposal for everyone. It is no secret that there is a lot of tension in the air here; many small and large events are all adding up, weighing down upon you all. I can see that, it is obvious. I did agree to come here to help quell these problems, but so far, not much has come of that. So, I have a thought, an idea. As it turns out, my... birthday is coming up, and I would like something from each of you.Event 4 - Snowflake Gifts2 years ago in Personal More Like This
: WHAT?! What have you even given me or any of US? That nasty cold? Yeah. This sounds like it’s gonna be a great trade.
: Woah what? You have a birthday? Aren't you like... well, I guess all dragons came from an egg.
: Of course I have a birthday. In any case, what I would like is rather simple. I would really enjoy if you each gave someone important to you a gift to show you
Artworks from when I was just a childWhat is up! I was tidying up a room the other day and came across a box of my old drawings, I really did draw a lot back then. So when looking through them I decided it might be a good idea to take photos of them and show the public. I am sure it may make you feel better about your art after seeing mine! Honestly speaking this is just around 2% of all the artworks I found and I ain't exaggerating... thats what happens when you are an only child. About the Username Change and the Imeji CheinjiI never believed that name change would exist due to many valid reasons, but yet, they made it. Honestly, I've been wanting to change my name since long time. I'm in no ties or any desire with "Pearl" in any way which I named it when I was quite young. Also that name makes me sick sometimes- so a new name change is going to be a great, refreshing start.About the Username Change and the Imeji Cheinji2 years ago in Personal More Like This
So, yes I do plan to change name yet my icon will remain not changed to keep people to recognize me. And here I want to write a journal about being really careful, be smart and think twice if we decide to change name: to not cause that kind of trend where "Oh I got bored with that name, lemme change onto another" and making a'la Japan's trend of changes known as imeji cheinji.
Firstly, try to imagine, if there is artist (or active watcher, popular artist, active friend or even troller which you dislike etc.) which you admire is known under Crystallox2* (and you probably will notice how many people also call that person as "Crys"

As many have requested and asked me for, here are the links that i have posted everywhere that i think the modern artist should be looking at for inspiration, references and anything else related to art development. Most of these links are from/about professionals in various practices and have proven their worth in their field through various published, accomplished and honored works. There is nothing definitive here and I shouldn't be responsible for any lost hours or hair that will result due to the reading of the links below. Results also may vary but who cares right? Yeah. If you see your name on the list, congratulations! Your hard efforts have earned you a place to compete in the main competition of End Run. Your character will now be moved onto round 1.
"My character didn't make the cut. What now?"
Sadly your character didn't make it into the main event, but that doesn't mean they can be counted out. You are allowed to turn them into an NPC character. However you will need to fill out the appropriate NPC application.
"SO WHEN DOES ROUND 1 START?"
Round 1 shall be released February 5th. Exactly one week from now. CAN'T WAIT? Neither can I. So we'll be having a mini event coming up early this week to keep you tied over. Keep your eyes peeled.
OCT RealizationsUpon scrambling to get through the judging of round one of DeviantDead last night, I realized some common shortcomings that I feel people should pay mind to. Not to say everyone didn't put in a fantastic effort and make some really great stuff, but these are the things that wear me down and make me cranky and tired to be wading through a pile of comics at midnight when I should be sleeping before I go to work.OCT Realizations4 years ago in Personal More Like This
1) GET TO THE POINT
I will readily admit that if I get to the fifth page of a comic and nothing terribly gripping has happened yet, I'm inclined to not read the rest of the comic. I know pacing and character exposé are a huge thing to worry about, but characters can talk and give us some insight into the kind of people they are while they move around and push the story forward. If you dawdle, you're just wasting everybody's time with the pile of extra work you made for yourself.
2) MIND YOUR OPPONENT

FURTHER DISCLAIMER: every oct is different, someone doing things differently from the norm is not bad. These are all merely tools and guidelines meant to help. I've heard a lot about personal attacks being made using both my posts about OCT's as a way of bullying and pushing around the admins of other Tournament groups, and I do not condone it in the slightest. I'd like to apologize for anyone that has had that done to them.

Say NO to the Internet PricesI've been observing a situation of the artist who courageously set up their prices on very decent prices (in meaning: no more 50 bucks full color image of yer characters! but almost 200$ one for her really nice character painting) where I felt so proud of her for being brave to set up the real price of the art. But I was also a witness of bunch of complaining people (mostly I noticed they were young) screaming that her art is not worth for shitload bucks.Say NO to the Internet Prices2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I really wanted to slap faces of these people.
Really, who decide that someone's art is worth that price?
You do not decide how much wort is my art - as my work.
You do not know how much effort I've put into a piece, countless hours, stress, time, including also a years of practice and studies, frustration as well personal finances into the art materials.
Do you think my art is a fun hobby?
You do not decide if my art is a form of fun and what are real feelings with the artist while working on artwork as part of paid job.
It's no more

He’d been gone for weeks now and this was one of the only opportunity’s you had to see him, see him properly and not just hear his voice. The ship’s hatch opened and out he came. No one said he would be able to do it, he wasn’t the strongest guy out there, but he was smart and quick-witted.
Not to mention that he had a heart of gold.
He stood proudly, the members of his team crowding around him to see the view as well. Look at the leader he was, the leader your sweet Canadian had grown into. The sight of his smile made your arms ache. It’d been so long since you’d been able to hold him. But he was coming home soon. And when he did, he was in for a su
