Fighting the Bloat: Tips for Writing Strong, Lean Poetry and Prose
Hello, everyone! Ross here, for the Writing Basics week hosted by CRLiterature at projecteducate, and I'm talking about writing less. If you write from time to time in your life, it's certain that you either 1) are about to write too much, 2) are currently writing too much, or 3) have just recently written too much. We're going to help fix that.
Obviously I am not saying you should write less often, or write fewer words overall. I am saying that you need to make those words count if you want to be an effective writer: bloat is bad. Those of you who know me know that the preceding sentence is the most hypocritical thing you have ever read, because I sometimes elevate unnecessary verbosity to a sickening, scatological art form. So, to keep me on task, this article will periodically reference a TV show where the characters spend about

Poetry is poetry. Or is it?This is our first member-written blog, brought to you by Car5Poetry is poetry. Or is it?4 years ago in Personal More Like This
Greetings, fellow Deviants!
So this is a blog about poetry, and some of my thoughts on poetry, and some of my thoughts in general.
Recently, I have been trying to write a bit more poetry, and the more I read and write poetry, and the more I study poetry, the more I think about poetry. Logical as this seems, sometimes I wonder whether the genre of poetry truly lends itself to analysis; to a picking apart of a coherent and whole entity in order to “understand” it. I often ponder whether there are merits to this relentless literary unravelling of the enigmatic rainbow that is poetry.
I remember in high school, I was one of the few students who actually enjoyed poetry. It intrigued me, as it seemed to contain something sublime, something intangible yet profound. Most of my class hated it – it was like a cryptic code to be deciphered; a foreign language that they had no interest in learning. The way t
Introducing the deviantART Collection on FotoliaToday, we are announcing the launch of the deviantART Collection on Fotolia, a selection of over 3,000 images from artists on deviantART. It is a grand experiment bringing together the excellence of work on deviantART with an opportunity for artists to gain worldwide commercial exposure for their work.Introducing the deviantART Collection on Fotolia4 years ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
What is the deviantART Collection?
A while back, we announced our partnership with Fotolia.com through the StockProject group, where you can find hundreds of free stock images. We teamed up with Fotolia once again to create the deviantART Collection.
A team of professional photo editors started filtering through images on deviantART looking for excellent photographs that would work on commercial websites, like Fotolia, that sell images for designers and art directors to use in magazines, advertisements and product packaging. The team then offered artists on deviantART an opportunity to
PE: Literature Basics SettingsLiterature Basics WeekPE: Literature Basics Settings1 year ago in Literature Features More Like This
Along with characters and plot, setting is one of the most important choices we make when we write. In the most basic terms, setting is where your literary work takes place. It's up to you, as the author, to use it and mold it to fit the needs of your writing, make it more than just a backdrop to your prose or poetry.
A good setting becomes like a character itself. It can be express moods, offer comfort or hindrance. The setting can even be the main antagonist - consider the Overlook Hotel in Stephen King's The Shining, or the island in the 2000 Tom Hanks' film, Cast Away. In both of these examples, the protagonist(s) have to survive their surroundings, one mundane, the other ... less so.
Make Your Setting Work For You
Everything in your written work must be chosen for maximum effect. When deciding on your setting, decide what you want to accomplish with it. Here are some possibilities.
Frozen Review (no spoilers)Saw Frozen finally. Gotta say, it was much better than I thought it was going to be.Frozen Review (no spoilers)2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Like many of you, I was privy to the ongoing “takedown” of this latest Disney cartoon through various forums and blogs online. And this is a spectacular reason why you shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover. So much of the pre-release hatred was focused on trivial things (some of which had been changed without the community knowing for a long time) and on pointing out minor technical errors that I kinda feel like people were WANTING to hate this movie from the start. (And full disclosure here: I even participated in some of that pre-release hate.)
To be honest, after I saw it I felt kinda “meh” about it. But the more I’ve let it sink in and the more I’ve thought about it after the fact, the more I began to appreciate it (Which is always good). It’s better to have a movie start off meh and become a favorite over time than one which y

'The Invisible Empire' by Juha Arvid Helminen'The Invisible Empire' by Juha Arvid Helminen5 months ago in Art Features More Like This
Finnish photographer Juha Arvid Helminen conveys a message on the misuse of power in politics and religion in his dark, faceless portrait series, "The Invisible Empire."
"In 2006 I witnessed the so called Smash ASEM demonstration in front of the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma in Helsinki. I personally experienced the dark side of the Finnish police, with young men hiding behind their uniforms and hoods, anonymously committing misconduct. Later I also witnessed the reluctance of the justice system to punish those in uniform.
Uniforms create unity and through them we can for example tell apart a soldier from a civilian. The dark side is the seeming justification to violence and the possibility to disappear in the masses when we do something truly evil.
We wear clothes dictated by religion, political thoughts and tradition to communicate and represent authority but also as a sign of belonging and our ide
