He sees it out of the corner of his eye-
the flash of a gun,
the curl of fingers.
He's out of practice.
Slower than usual.
But he's been Alliance for longer than he's been retired,
and his reflexes kick in anyway,
turning over the table,
pushing the woman in front of him down,
dropping to the floor himself.
He hears the gun fire.
He rolls, using the table for cover.
Rattled thoughts ram through his brain.
What the fuck-
Who the hell-
Are you kidding me?
He wishes he had his gun,
and as he glances around for something useful,
his thoughts become more orderly.
There's only one exit.
If I can find a way to move the civilians out-
no, not enough time.
Gotta take him down.
Fuck, I need backup!
As if in answer to a prayer-
not that Shepard believes in those,
he hears a familiar voice.
His hand snaps

Kaidan had arrived at the little café about 45 minutes before the time of their meeting... And now, he was starting to regret it. For the last half hour, he had been rehearsing in his head what he was going to say, how Shepard was likely to react, different scenarios with different outcomes... Some rather good, others nothing short of catastrophic... The anticipation was simply driving him mad!
It didn't help that this was the very first time that he'd been thinking about getting involved in a serious relationship with another man either... Not that gender mattered much, as far as he was concerned. Though many men or women did develop an exclusive attraction to either gender, it was never something that Kaidan had ever really taken the time to consider.
He remembered having watched vids from the early 21st century where people were the victims of discrimination and violence for identifying as gays,
Heal My Wounds--Chapter 1"Joker, I don't care what you have to do, get us back to Earth," Kaidan's voice was sharp and demanding as he ran into the cockpit. The thought of his commander gone was just too much for him to accept. There were too many words that still needed to be shared, so much more to be done between them. He couldn't face the highly probable chance that his lover -after years of feeling betrayed and loving him regardless of that- was gone. He ran a hand through his thick black hair. There was no way that he was losing John.Heal My Wounds--Chapter 13 years ago in Romance More Like This
The flight lieutenant nodded, having suffered a loss of his own, finding Shepard would have been a welcomed distraction. Even though that Shepard had told he and EDI not to get together, he still felt the impact of her loss.
John had never been a proper gentleman, hell he was never proper at all. He would kill someone without a second thought, but no matter what he did, he had a reason. Joker growled as he stood, finding that he had broken a rib. "Get Adams, we're goin

The Catalyst was the Citadel... All of this time, it had been right under their noses... And now, the Reapers had managed to snatch it away from them in order to bring it into Earth's orbit, right within Reapers controlled territory.
Kaidan couldn't exactly say that it came out as a complete surprise, though. After all, throughout each cycle, it seemed that the Citadel had always played a key role... Each new civilisation that had discovered it believing that the technology of the colossal deep-space station and mass relays had once belonged to some ancient sentient race that had then mysteriously vanished.
Fascinating how quick they were to trust that it was then perfectly safe to start inhabiting, and completely ignore the potential warning signs, including the enigmatic "keepers".
But then again, finding out that you weren't alone in the Universe was already a pretty big thing to process... Learning that, on top

"Can you feel it Shepard? Feel the quickening? Illusive Man better say his prayers tonight, 'cause we are coming for him. Murderous asshole. Oh yeah... Tide is turning... I feel it."
They had been confronted to many atrocities over the last few years, but this? He didn't know how Shepard had managed it... Calmly convincing Henry Lawson to hand Oriana over to them in exchange for his life. Perhaps because deep down, he knew that Miranda was going to take a stand against her father and put an end to his horrible schemes, once and for all. If she hadn't, Kaidan probably would have been the one giving him a little "biotic push" in the right direction. Which was down... Way down...
The thought of taking another person's life had never been one to make him feel any sense of satisfaction... Until now...

After three days, Kaidan was sure that the blue-eyed guy was stalking him. Either that or he was assigned to every god damned place he happened to be at.
He didn't look at only him, that much Kaidan was sure of. But when Kaidan was looking at him, the stranger seemed to be studying him.
This made Kaidan nervous. And when he was nervous, he fucked up more easily.
"God damn it, Alenko, where the hell is your head?! You would have been dead out there," Michael barked, tugging off his helmet so he could give Kaidan a proper glare as they walked out of the simulator, breathing hard.
"I am sorry, okay? It's just That guy makes me nervous. He keeps -staring-," Kaidan barked back, wiping away the sweat on his forehead, helmet already under his arm.
"Get over yourself, he is staring at everyone," Michael replied, his voice gruff. "That's what he's doing, observing. Like, it's why he's here."

It turned out that Joker and Garrus had been right... Perhaps all that Shepard really needed in order to beat the Reapers and save the galaxy was someone that loved him. If the last few weeks were any indication, at least. Simply put, the Commander was on a roll. He had just killed another Reaper, ended the quarians v.s. geths conflict without having to sacrifice either side, and now, they even had Tali back.
According to EDI, Shepard's biometrics showed a significant decrease in terms of stress levels, as well as an increase in his reflexes and his ability to achieve and maintain optimum levels of concentration. He still had nightmares occasionally, but thankfully, they were now the exception instead of the norm.
If he'd ever had any fears about their relationship being a distraction, or interfering with their duty to the crew and their mission, they had also proved to be unfounded. Shepard had always b

It had been hours of just sitting and waiting. Waiting for death as their attackers did to them what they did to the Normandy, or waiting to be saved, waiting for the Alliance to arrive and rescue them. Nobody said anything, just an occasional sob escaping in the beginning, but as time passed only the silent breathing or the crew members could be heard.
After almost three hours of waiting, backup arrived. By then their attackers were long gone. Kaidan had no idea how many had survived the attack, but he knew everyone couldn't have made it. It didn't make it easier when he saw how many faces that was missing when they got on board one of the frigates.
He saw the pilot sitting in a corner, Dr. Chakwas looking over him. Neither of them saying anything.
Kaidan could see the two of them locking eyes for a moment before Chakwas continued with her examination of Joker's arm.

Chapter 1: Loss
It took him time. Taking a deep breath he stretched a little. The crash had been rough and he was afraid to become aware of the very familiar pain of broken bones. But he could breathe. That at least was a good sign and motivated him to stir a little more in his seat. Only then was his attention drawn away from his body and he became aware of the silence stretching through the ship. It had never been that quiet, not even on a late night in the dry docks. Not after the Council had grounded them. Just never! There was always something, like the metallic sound of footsteps on the tiles or distant murmur.
Fighting against the rising lump of panic in his throat, he closed his eyes and took another deep breath. He held it for a few seconds and that was when he finally heard it: stirring, a murmur and breathing. The breathing of others. Of other people. Of Crewmen. Of his crew.
Hel felt himself calm a little, odd as it was in these circumst

I always wondered if that was true. And what would I see, what scenes would Kaidan Alenko The Highlights be made of? I don't know if there would be much personal stuff, like spending evenings with my parents in Vancouver, looking at the sun setting and painting the sky in all possible shades of red, a cool Canadian lager in one hand. Maybe I would live through my first kiss again, my first time having sex although these two might not be considered highlights.
Or maybe there would be my time in the Brain Camp. Rahna and the other kids. Making out hidden in secret spots to avoid the teachers, throwing each

The voices were incomprehensible through the veil of black around me. It had thinned over the time, allowing me to catch a glimpse of the world behind it, only once. I had bathed in light that time, so bright it had blinded me. Something had covered my eyes, a gentle hand and something had stung in my neck.
"Not yet, Lieutenant."
And I had fallen back into familiar darkness.
But now it was fading, growing weaker with every heartbeat, until it felt like I only had to reach out and brush it away to see the light again. Nevertheless I could not move, so I tried to listen to the voices, tried to understand what they were saying. The effort made my brain feel like it was crushed between the hands of a Krogan, but I ignored the pain and the dizziness, longing for something of the world around me.

At Last, a Reply... Kaidan found himself thankful that it was dark by the time he had reached his apartment. Granted, it was only midday, but the atmosphere had clouded over in anticipation for a storm, leaving little light that managed to break through the clouds. The lighting seemed appropriate, given his melancholy mood, he thought to himself as he made his way through his apartment. He hadn't bothered clicking on any of the lights when he came home- the natural light coming from the window didn't quite fill the apartment, but it was enough to see where he was going. His weary eyes scanned the space, lingering on his black couch for a moment, trying not to think of when Olivea had cuddled against him there, shortly after the Battle of the Citadel, before his gaze came to rest on his work desk, a soft sigh finally breaking past his lips.At Last, a Reply...4 years ago in Short Stories More Like This

The Captive (John Shepard x James Vega)Of all the spineless, cowardly, miserable bureaucratic political bullcrap the Alliance had pulled in the past, this took the damn cake. Why didn’t they just dishonorably discharge him? At this rate, that’s where he was headed anyway. They already gave him a damn medal for his supposed heroics, but were quick to dismiss them behind his back and criticize them as though they were acts of terrorism to be evaluated. Alright granted, he might be willing to admit he didn’t have the best track record lately; and maybe having shore leave after that mission a few months ago on Omega was probably not the best of ideas, but he never wanted to pick a fight with Batarians…Honestly how was he supposed to know that relations between them had nearly exploded into a thousand pieces, the Alliance didn’t tell him anything. He was given a promotion and a pat on the back to shut him up, and now he was being firmly kicked aside where this new promotion wouldn’t even be oThe Captive (John Shepard x James Vega)2 years ago in Sci-Fi More Like This

Cortland Hawke tried not to wince at the embarrassingly girlish edge to his own voice as he stepped gingerly over the corpses of dragons and darkspawn littering the tunnel through which he walked. He was the Champion of Kirkwall, damn it all, not some weak-hearted oh, Maker what did he just step in?
Pinching his lips together, Cortland scraped the bottom of his boot on a convenient patch of moss, gripped the handle of his dagger just a little tighter, and continued into the murky darkness.
Truth be told, he was getting anxious. Unlike the mage he was following, Cortland had no warden senses to tingle and alert him to darkspawn presence. Maybe coming in here alone hadn't been the wisest move, but he had been acting on reflex.
