Last month, the color-me-club held a coloring contest. For the first time in the club's history, we got a discouraging number of entries that were proven to be theft. People would take an existing contest entry, throw some hue/saturation wizardry on it, smear some dodge and burn, drop a spontaneous texture overlay on it, and attempt to call it their own thinking that the color-me-club is but a teeny-weeny #Group of novice digital artists.
Boy did they ever get their shit kicked in.
The fallout from disqualifying their entries and reporting them to dA staff is still descending. Yet enough time has passed from the contest's conclusion to make public my official

We'd also like to give a big "Thank you!" to Joe Madureira from Vigil Games for picking the three winners from the terrific Semi-Finalists. It was a tough job, and we sure are glad he stepped up to the challenge. Thanks, Joe Mad!

deviantPOINTS: An updateOver the past few months we’ve been keeping a watchful eye on the way that members in our community have been offering points as payment for certain types of services within deviantART. We’ve seen all sorts of creative uses, from offering to critique your work for a few points, journal features for a few more points and my personal fav -- avatars, journal skins and any other sort of art commission for points. It’s been great to see deviants use their experience and skills to fund their super group upgrades, prints purchases and even treating their friends and families to their very first item of deviantWEAR.deviantPOINTS: An update4 years ago in Personal More Like This
As time rolled on, we noticed a new trend creeping in. People were not just offering a small number of points for a task that they’d normally do as part of their daily deviating -- people were offering thousands of page views for hundreds of points, and there seemed to be no limit to the amount that could be purchased, or offered. Of Getting An Art Major
A heated argument broke out in my house this afternoon.
I live in a rental situation, renting a large room (with my own bathroom and workspace, real nice setup) in a Filipino household. Love my landlord, get along great with the other housemates, but to emphasize the 'Filipino' aspect of the living situation, there's a lot of family taking residence here. And with family, with teenage offspring, with high standards and expectations from the older immigrant generation speaking upon the younger American-born kin, tension is inevitable.
The daughter of one of the housemates is loo
Project Educate: Basic Photography TerminologyPhotography TerminologyProject Educate: Basic Photography Terminology3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
This is a term that refers to the way the lens blurs the image and the aesthetic quality of that blur. Some lenses cause the image to blur that is pleasing to the eye, whereas others blur in a more unpleasant or distracting way. It is considered good practice to have the subject of the image in focus, while the background is blurred. Bokeh occurs in the part of the image that lies outside the depth of field and photographers sometimes use a shallow focus to make the out of focus regions more prominent.
Depth of Field
This refers to how much of the scene is in focus. In portrait or macro photography, it is better to have a shallow depth of field and keep only part of the image in focus, as opposed to landscape photography where you'd generally want a larger depth of field and keep everything in focus.

Featured Prints Artist: Stanley Lau
Stanley Lau a.k.a. Artgerm is a busy child as an illustrator, designer, concept artist and art director. Born and bred in Hong Kong, he soaked up his creativity and interest in arts early on and trained his artistic skills and knowledge ever since in a never-ending process. Filled with creative juices to the top of his head, Stanley is active all day with various projects at his Imaginary Friends Studios designing art and concepts for computer and card games companies, animation houses or comic publishers. He is also founder of his own advertising & design agency and a t-shirt label, and when Stanley is not working on any of these, he can be found playing video games across many platforms or the occasional karaoke session. We are proud to feature Artgerm as our Prints Artist of the Month in a very interesting interview.

Beybladegal asked me: “I was wondering how safe this site is for original art work. I’ve been wanting to put some of my own character on here but I’m afraid to out of fear of having someone steal it. I was just wondering if you’ve had any problems with this kind of thing? Or if you do something special to keep them safe.”
I figured this is a question lots of people ask themselves (and I have too), so I’ll share my long-winded answer.
1. Thieves are going to steal. We had our car broken into once and the thief took nothing. He couldn’t pry open the door so he just shattered the window to unlock it. We had nothing valuable, but we had to replace our broken window. I hope that a thief may wander into your gallery, see nothing worth taking

The Tree as Beautiful MachineThe Tree as Beautiful Machine3 years ago in DeviantART Announcements More Like This
While searching deviantART for images for the Earth Day article, I became intrigued with how trees have become not only such a central focus of our current environmental concerns, but also how they play such a central role in our art, whether as background or actual subject matter. There are so many Enchanted Forests on deviantART that it made me wonder if trees, so mundane and taken for granted yet at the same time so vital to life on earth and so steeped in myth, have always been the revered subjects of the world’s artists.
How to use DPI properly. This is one of the biggest problems I see other people running into, and I've had to explain it a countless number of times. The bummer is that it's really quite simple, but if you don't know how it works it's easy to get mixed up.How to use DPI properly.4 years ago in Personal More Like This
The following is more or less what I'm going to tell you, but in a less comprehensive fashion. So if these 2 main points make enough sense to you, then you can decide if you need more information and explanation:
You only need to set DPI when working with actual dimensions like inches or centimeters, etc. So if you're working directly in pixels already, it's useless.
Therefore, the only time you really need to set the DPI is when you need to ensure good print quality, and know your real world dimensions but not the exact pixels. The program will set the pixels for you based off the other information.
First and foremost, you REALLY don't need to work in real world dimensions such as inches or centimeters unless
Regarding personal style. To anyone who is obsessively busy trying to find a style unique to them; don't. It seems to have become some sort of trend nowadays on dA, trying to "find a style", when really it is something quite ridiculous to be doing.Regarding personal style.4 years ago in Art Features More Like This
If you compare it to handwriting, it's like worrying about how to make every single letter of the alphabet both beautiful and unique to you when your spelling and grammar leave a lot to be desired, while they are really the most important things to learn first. Sure having a pretty style to look at is nice, just like having a beautiful handwriting. But if all of your other artistic knowledge is falling behind, much like your spelling and grammar, the result will still be unattractive and your art will not reach the viewer in the way that you intended.
So in short, focus on getting better, on gathering knowledge, experience, and practicing, not on finding your own style. Style will happen automatically. Not to mention the fact that if you're a good and experienced eno
