The ring bearer by SusaStrawberry
The characters in J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings have been enticing readers for over 60 years.
Today fans are able to journey to the magical realm of Middle-earth through the wizardry of Peter Jackson’s revolutionary six film cinematic adventure.
Jackson ushered in the age of the modern day movie franchise by questionably shootin
Told You We're On Matt Smith's PhoneFor those who maybe didn't believe the story I told about our group meeting Matt Smith & Karen Gillian at this past summer's Comic Con and having them snap photos of us for themselves on their mobile devices, have a look at this clip from the Friday Dec 23rd, Graham Norton ShowTold You We're On Matt Smith's Phone3 years ago in Personal More Like This

Ignore Gillian Anderson (yeah I couldn't believe that was her either) and check out Matt's comments in the last 40 seconds.
For fun here's the photoshopped version of our Matt Smith/Karen Gillan pic with the 4th doctor added- as it should be. He would have been there but for a few mistimed minutes anyway. Even though that unintentionally mimicked "The Five Doctors" pretty closely. Minus the wax Tom Baker statue...
TUTORIAL! How to fix wet paper!Have you ever done a drawing and accidently spilled water on it? Or maybe your paper just ended up too wonky from painting too much? Well I have the way to fix that!TUTORIAL! How to fix wet paper!5 years ago in Personal More Like This
Now if you spilled water or juice or something and messed up the coloring or the drawing itself...well I can't help you there...but I do know how to make your paper go straight again after its gone all wobbly.
For this you'll need:
- The messed up drawing. It has to have already dried. Do NOT try this while the paper is still wet!
- about 4 to 6 spare sheets of thin paper from your printer
- spare fabric, enough to cover the drawing. A nice cotton shirt works well
- an iron
- a heavy book
Step 1: prep your iron so its nice and hot. While your waiting for it to get warm go to step 2.
Step 2: Lay two sheets of paper onto a flat surface. I used a notebook but a table or thick board works too...a cushioned ironing board will not

Tolkien Illustrator’s First Aid Kit: Elves
Tolkien’s texts are notable for their abundance of characters, many of them mentioned perhaps only once, other playing very important parts in the stories. However, it is often very difficult to find any description of how those characters look, and this is what we, artists and illustrators, are usually most concerned with.
So here it is – Tolkien Illustrator’s First Aid Kit – a list of all those characters, whose physical appearance is mentioned in the texts, including The Silmarillion and The History of the Middle-earth.
To start with, the Elves. As we know, during the march from Cuiviënén t
Talks with Tolkien artists: Gold-SevenI decided to post a series of interviews with the most inspirational Tolkien artists at devianArt in the three Tolkien-related groups:Talks with Tolkien artists: Gold-Seven2 years ago in Art Features More Like This

And here are the questions already:
1. You are an outstanding artist and illustrator of Tolkien's stories. When did you read Tolkien's books for the first time, and what impression did they leave in you?

1. How did you come up with the room guardian concept?
The idea caught fire when a friend and I were walking through an antique store. On one of the bookshelves sat two stuffed foxes wearing riding clothes. I contemplated buying them because one could convince themselves that their expressionless stares were actually seeing and watching over the room. It was as if they were alive though they were a long way from being realistic. My contemplation came to an end when I realized I could spend less money and have a better one if I just made it myself. That is where
Points are NOT DollarsOh hi, guys! I'm going to talk a little about points this morning. They're cute. They're fun to trade and deviants like getting them! But, I've wanted to write up a journal about this for quite a while now. It's a reminder of what points actually are and for artists to not grossly undercharge for their work. There's lots of tips out there to help artists settle on a price that is fair to them as creators and to their buyers, but I understand it's entirely too easy to undersell yourself. It's difficult to find that balance between making an actual profit and scaring off any potential customers! This is coming from an artist that still struggles with it herself.Points are NOT Dollars9 months ago in Personal More Like This
It's a tiny bit easier to come to a decision when thinking in terms of real dollars. Unfortunately, I've noticed that understanding is lost when art is sold for points here on dA. And when a creator totally GETS it and charges a fair price in points, they're often told they're overcharging. But, for the most part, both creators a

It's a fact that an individual is often powerless to get the work they want in situations where that work is simply not reasonably compensated. This is not a fault of our own -- even when we reject that kind of work, others will happily accept it and make low rates the standard.
My point is that even then we should not be inactive, but always look for new ways to use our skills to make a living. We are experts at what we do, after all.
This is why we need groups like ArtPACT that educate and inform about the industry, and illustrators' guilds like the IO (in Germany), the GAG, AIGA, and AOI to educate ourselves about legal practices, business standards, industry rates, and support each other, because w

MLP: Minky Color Guide:
Which minky color works best for ______ (insert MLP character here)?
This journal is an attempt to answer that question. There are more than 50 shades of minky out there, and as a plushie maker, I realize that it can be difficult to know which color will work best for the particular pony you're working on. This is made even more frustrating by the fact that many of the images of the minky do not show the true color!
I recently ordered a ton of swatches from fabric.com, and I'm continuing to collect swatches from various websites, in an attempt to get most of the minky colors. Because I have the actual fabric with me, I can compare it to the characters' colors to see which fits best, to ensure that you can make a plushie that is as show-accurate as possib

"NEVER SEEN BEFORE" - big Tolkien themed contest
Details in MirachRavaia's own words:
I recently got a comment on my art which made me realize that there are many scenes and characters in Tolkien's book which almost never get illustrated, while you can find hundreds of illustrations for others. Just a few examples would be
- the events during the Scouring of the Shire
- the Ringbearers arriving and living in Valinor
- Galadriel living in Eregion or passing through Moria to Lórien
- Pippin exploring Minas Tirith with Bergil
- the "lesser known" kings of Gondor and Númenor and Chieftains of Dúnedain
- Túrin attacking Glaurung in front of Nargothrond's gates BEFORE the dragon's look paralyzed him
For this contest, you need to find one that you have NEVER seen illustrated before. I won't give you more examples so you can think of your own, but feel free
My LegacyCancer is such a scary word…but I’m okay. I’m at peace with this. I do wish I had a little more time… But really I’ve discovered that with the last weeks of my life, I only have a few goals. I want to spend as much time with friends and family as I can, I want to leave behind as much happiness as I can, and I want to create as much artwork as I can I just want to leave behind a big bubble of love for you guys!My Legacy1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Of course that’s easier said than done, especially since I can’t just come and meet every single one of you and give you all giant hugs! It’s really hard to wrap up everything I’m feeling and send it to you all so that I can try and make your lives a little brighter, lol. But, there’s a solution!
I’m in the process of making a book of my artwork, a little bit of me that I can leave behind! Money made aside from publishing costs is all going to go towards research for cancer, so you’ll all be giving a

DA COMMISSIONS: WTF?I wanted to share this post I've seen on Tumblr. As a professionnal artist, I already know that I underprice my commissions. When you are a freelance, a drawing is generally 500€ to 1000€ when you're a beginner. On DA, I generally sell them at 30/50€. What to think about the new commission system, knowing that I'm already leaving my commissions for a low price?DA COMMISSIONS: WTF?1 year ago in Personal More Like This
You can easily understand: why do you open commissions then?
Well,I love drawing for other people, and most of commissionners don't even know the real price of a drawing (now you know!). But when I open commissions, this is because I've got the time, because I love to share with commissionners, to know their universe, OCs...and because it helps me to buy new fabric for reenactments too, for sure. But... Well... Shame on you DA! O_o
How can you sell a service for only 0.2/0.4$, knowing that DA takes 20% too?! O_o
It may be a good news for commissionners, but DA, you're killing the artists by making people think that a drawing cos

It is with heavy hearts that we must inform you of the passing of our darling daughter, Alie. Her final days were fairly peaceful, sleeping much of the time but also able to watch some of the Winter Olympics and enjoy her favorite event, figure skating. Her final moments were peaceful with both parents by her bedside.
We have all been preparing for this day for the past several weeks, knowing it was coming far faster than we hoped. From the moment in December when the news came of her terminal illness, Alie has continually amazed us with her positive attitude and limitless spirit. We have all learned from her selfless approach to life, her giving nature, and her passion for the possibilities that life hold for all of us She was so thankful for all of the outreach shown to her by her friends and family and we share in that gratitude. Unfortunately she was just too weak to be able to a

I'd just like to mention publicly, that I, as well as artists in general, are not art vending machines.
You don't type suggestions in, and then have a slot where artwork comes out for free .
Important to Note: I am not addressing any individual in particular. If you think this is about *you* specifically ( whoever you are)- don't. This about the private notes I get, with alarming volume, where people feel they can simply request artwork from me for free. I get a *lot* of these. Which prompted me to post something about it. I usually just ignore them, or, if I feel particularly polite that day, I send them a note back saying I don't do requests.
But they never stop o_O. And it's not that I mind suggestions in comments under artwork, such as: "Oh, I hope one day you will paint _________." or, "

We’ve all had at least one special book that we’ve loved and reread but when it comes to books that have defined and influenced us that list becomes much smaller. On most peoples lists J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic work The Lord of The Rings would be at the top of the list.
Without it many of
