A very long drive towards hope. . .There are often times I sit back and reflect upon many things in my life as I go about my daily duties. I think of those I have met and those whom I call friend, brother, sister, companion, family. I think of their struggles in life, the good days and the bad, and I often wish I could do more to ease their pain and give them comfort as well as congratulations and encouragement. These are the good people who deserve good things, and yet life has done them great harm by the hands of spiteful individuals. They are strong Sparks despite the pain, or perhaps because of it, and they stand firm in their belief that they have the right to live and be who they are. They are the ones I hold dear to me, they are the ones I lift up and give support to when they need me, and in whom I see a reflection of myself; their kindness and generosity, their strength and perseverance, their conviction and determination, and their protectiveness and compassion for others. The Human SpiritAlmost two weeks ago, one of my closest friends (actually we are developing a relationship) was shot 15 times in his face, neck, chest, and back while on duty as a deputy sheriff. When I got word, that he was shot, my heart skipped a few beats and sank. I am one of those that does not cry very often but in a restaurant, I broke down and cried clear across the country. He was on the East Coast and I am on the West Coast. I truly wondered if I would ever be able to talk to him again or get a chance to see him. I left the restaurant in tears even though I enjoy myself on Tuesday evenings since a live band plays requests for contemporary music. For the next 36 hours, I continued to cry and did not get any sleep. I practically did not eat or drink while trying to stay strong for him. During this time, he went into a coma which got me even more worried. The only way that I was going to eat or drink is if someone forced me to do it.
