On Unknown ArtistsThis article was originally inspired by a discussion with Alavesa and posted in a journal here but people told me I should make it a news article So here's a revised (hopefully improved) version. Any updates and additions will be posted there.
Tip for unknown artists
First, this is something I find many just don't realise... Did you know that you're way more likely to meet new friends and getting your work noticed if you interact with unknown artists, instead of only watching already popular ones? Unknown artists will appreciate any feedback you leave them a lot more (be it a critique, a fave etc.), and often will keep talking to you and return the favour, while to many popular artists, you may be just another drop in the sea.
Remember, the amounts of exposure you get doesn't just depend on the quality of your work you'll have to get some people to look in the first pla

Wait, what? If you don't know what a plz account is, you can find out here. This may also have you wondering how to create plz accounts. You can learn all about that by reading Project Educate: Plz Accounts by Krissi001.
Now that we're all on the same page, here's some exciting news!
HelpPlz.info is a portal to a massive database for deviantART's plz accounts. At the time of this article's publication, there are already over 25,000 plz accounts listed in this database, and that number is continuing to grow. Before this, deviants have been using journals and group blogs to store these accounts with somewhat frustrating and often cluttered results. But that's a

What's a Troll?
A troll is a small, brutish creature with a loud, piercing howl. They tend to be found mostly around forums and some chatrooms, but they've been spotted all over deviantART.
Contrary to popular belief, the troll is not an entirely aggressive species. When properly fed and socialized, most trolls are docile, fragile beings as long as they aren't overfed or startled.
Trolls tend to vary in size and stature, but one can usually spot a troll by a few identifying features. First, trolls are generally pale creatures with cramped fingers, which are often seen clenche

Last month, the color-me-club held a coloring contest. For the first time in the club's history, we got a discouraging number of entries that were proven to be theft. People would take an existing contest entry, throw some hue/saturation wizardry on it, smear some dodge and burn, drop a spontaneous texture overlay on it, and attempt to call it their own thinking that the color-me-club is but a teeny-weeny #Group of novice digital artists.
Boy did they ever get their shit kicked in.
The fallout from disqualifying their entries and reporting them to dA staff is still descending. Yet enough time has passed from the contest's conclusion to make public my official

Our original plans for Deviants Appreciation Day were so huge that there was no possible way to express our love for the community in a mere 24 hours. Instead, we've created Deviants Appreciation Week, and what better time to host a week's worth of community-oriented events than in the days leading up to our birthdAy?
Each day this week, we have something special organized for you to participate in! Check out the schedule of events below to come party with us!

Get Better At Drawing (Without Drawing Anything)Art is a process.Get Better At Drawing (Without Drawing Anything)3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Like that of the scientific method and philosophical alchemy, art can be refined and improved through process. From observation, to experiment, to reflection and conclusion, art is improved by the steps we make towards change, not solidification and stagnation. Much of the advice out there for drawing is simply practice or avoid distractions. This advice is good, but there is more to creation than just throwing yourself mindlessly into a task and avoiding bad habits along the way. Good habits and knowledge will help to excel your learning process faster, and from that, improve faster and more effectively.
Look at it
As an artist, observation is key. The skill we develop is not just seeing, but interpreting what we see, remembering what we have seen and recording it in the form of visual art. This is a skill that, aside from blindness or vision degradation, you will be able to improve during your entire life. The way of seeing from an art

Of Getting An Art Major
A heated argument broke out in my house this afternoon.
I live in a rental situation, renting a large room (with my own bathroom and workspace, real nice setup) in a Filipino household. Love my landlord, get along great with the other housemates, but to emphasize the 'Filipino' aspect of the living situation, there's a lot of family taking residence here. And with family, with teenage offspring, with high standards and expectations from the older immigrant generation speaking upon the younger American-born kin, tension is inevitable.
The daughter of one of the housemates is loo
'Why is this a DD?' Why are you asking the artist? The cool thing about art is that, unlike pretty much everything else out there, it's meant to elicit an emotional reaction.'Why is this a DD?' Why are you asking the artist?1 year ago in Art Features More Like This
Sometimes this reaction is rage. Or something close to it.
Sometimes when you see a DD you don't like or get or something, it's doing exactly what the artist intended. But other times, it has nothing to do with the art itself. Because, you know what, we all see DDs we don't "get" every now and then. I'll say it now: I don't like every single DD that has been posted.
More relevant to this conversation, I don't get why some of the DDs that have been posted were considered featurable (which, as we're trying to get across, really means: I don't personally think that some pieces merit 24-hour massive exposure).
And I have the right to think these things.
You do, too.
What's the appropriate place to find out why something was given a DD?
Protip: it's not the art.
It might be a self-suggestion or not, the fact o
Original Characters At Their Best Contest!Original Characters at the Best Contest Manga/Anime contest!Original Characters At Their Best Contest!3 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Welcome to the official Manga/Anime Contest, hosted by AwsumZ, and Nyiana-sama. We often see a lot of drawings that get recognized very well by the community, however, a lot of the time it seems that original characters can sometimes get ignored in favor of fan art. Each original character has their own story, and each of these characters deserves to be appreciated, not only by their artist, but by the wider community.
This contest is held in honor of original characters doing what they do best, whether its playing baseball, drawing, academics, or anything else, as long as your character is at their best. How you interpret this is completely up to you.
Some simple rules:
This is a Manga/Anime contest, so your entry must be drawn in a manga/anime style to qualify. No anthro, no fanart. Only Original Character in the Manga/Anime style.

Comments and Commenting We all know that getting the exposure you want for your work is a tough endeavour here on dA. Despite the wonders of the site, the simple fact of the matter is that comments are hard to come by these days.Comments and Commenting3 months ago in Literature Features More Like This
There may be many reasons for this - lack of time on the part of many browsers, lack of interest, or simply: not knowing what to say. We've all been there at one point (some of us more than others), and it presented the question - "what is it that writers want out of a comment?"
The only way to find the answer to this question was to set up a poll - which received an amazing response from the lit community, and with your help, this editorial will highlight some points that will aid in leaving some insightful and appreciated comments.
First and foremost - Read.
Many of the writers on dA want f

This is miontre, writing a blog with step by step instructions on how you can gain more exposure on your art!
Let's get started
Step 1: Join some groups!
Groups are a great way to start gaining more exposure on your art quickly. Visit the Groups page, and start searching for some groups which will accept your art. The more groups you can find, the better. Search using keywords, and by filtering on the right side of the screen. Groups with a certain focus (e.g. photos of blonde girls riding on white horses rather than just photos) are obviously going to gain you more exposure, because the people watching these groups are more likely to be looking for a particular style of art, not just to expose their own art. Not all groups are related to art, but here are the most common variety of art related groups:

I want to draw... but I don't know what.
There are a number of ways people go around dealing with this issue. Just doodling til something pops out. Working on a list of prompts. Asking people to help give them ideas. Doing an entry for a contest.... there are lots of ways of going about finding something to draw.
EH = Ernest Hemmingway
My own personal way of dealing with it, makes use of the opposite problem.
I have loads of ideas! But I have to go to bed/have no time/paper/drawing equipment.
When I have lots of ideas, as is common for me before I'm about to go to bed, or when I'm supposed to be doing something else, I write it down in my magical sparkly kitty book, AKA my Artist Journal. If I just shrug and go "I'll draw that later"

So what does it take to become a Senior? That's a question many have asked and have never really been able to get a straight answer on. Some have gained Seniority as a thank you for their time spent as a Volunteer, or to recognise their contribution to a particular project or collaborative action. Some have gained Seniority because of their community spirit, providing help and assistance to many other deviants and taking time out to promote the work of others in the community.
Some people have received Seniority because of their artistic endevours, having a positive influence on their peers by sharing resources, providing constructive criticism and by being a voice that stands out above the many others who deviate to be recognised in the crowd.
Today, we present to you the following deviants who have all been awarded Seniority as part of our 11th birthday celebrations. They have all been nominated

Recently, I announced changes to Daily Deviations in this journal and I'm happy to say that the response has been favorable. To review, we have made the following changes:
a> The "3-month rule" is now the "6-month rule" meaning an artist cannot receive another DD if they have had one in the last 6 months.
b> Daily Deviation selectors are limited to a maximum of one selection per day. This has been put in place to focus on quality vs quantity.
The hard-coding of these new guidelines is now in place (special thanks to ZombieCoder for that ).
These changes are part of an ongoing initiative to better our Dai
