Do Not EngageThis is a notice to all my fans.Do Not Engage2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Since I've returned to making SYAC again there's been a bit of a resurgence of trolls. There are a lot of fake accounts floating around out there with my name attached, and many of them are posting alternate SYAC strips and my old fetish work. While they are fairly obvious to spot, just to be safe I am writing to remind everyone that these accounts are not mine.
DeviantArt has made it more complicated to report copyright infringement issues, and I simply don't have the time to sift through the troll's gallery of re-uploads, find the original URL's (if any even exist anymore), and file DMCA on each and every post. It takes weeks to get anything accomplished and it wastes the time of DA moderators who have to sift through those individual reports. And even if I am successful in getting the troll banned, they'll just create a second account and come right back with another bucketload of altered art and start all over again. That's wasted time and e
DRM, Spammers, SYAC is BackXbox720's potential DRM?DRM, Spammers, SYAC is Back2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Microsoft's lead creative director Adam Orth got angry over the backlash always online DRM has gotten lately (thanks in no small part to Sim City and Diablo III), and decided to take his frustrations to twitter. Orth made a plethora of sarcastic remarks, insulting people's place of residence, and mocking anyone not rich enough to always have an internet connection. By doing so, not only did he make himself look like an ass, he may have inadvertently revealed that the upcoming XBOX 720 may include always online DRM. Nice...
Since he's made his twitter account personal, you'll have to visit this http://www.screwattack.com/news/microsoft-lead-creative-director-uses-twitter-defend-rumored-always-xbox-720 to see a sampling of the remarks he made.
Speaking of "unprofessional," what's with the influx of spammers lately?
I know that DA has had long running problems with it, but I just got like 8 spams in a row on just one of my deviations.
Good Grief.I wish satire/sarcasm wasn't so easily missed on the internet. It's really discouraging to create something that obviously is meant to be taken as a joke, only to see hundreds of people respond to it like it's "serious business."Good Grief.2 years ago in Personal More Like This

Nintendo, Copyrights, Science vs TrollsNintendo Direct BombshellNintendo, Copyrights, Science vs Trolls2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Nintendo Direct unveiled a bunch of big announcements the other day, the highlights being a HD remake of Wind Waker, announcement of a new Zelda, a new Yoshi's Story game, a new 3D Mario game, a new Mario Kart game, and a new Smash Bros game to be unveiled at E3 this year. Other info like a possible sequel to Xenoblades, updates on Bayonetta 2, and a forthcoming WiiU firmware update that'll alleviate some of the sluggish load times and unlock the Virtual Console (as well as the announcement that Gamecube games and GBA games will be possibly sold in the eShop).
Quite a lot of info, but here's my question. Why is everyone surprised at it? I've lived through every console generation with Nintendo and I can honestly say, a lot of this wasn't really a surprise to me. Like, yeah of course they're gonna make a new Smash Bros, Mario Kart, and 3D Mario game. It's friggin' Nintendo. Why is that a surprise? It's not like those are second tier franchises like Metro
Controversial OpinionsYou know, sometimes having opinions can make you feel like no one else shares your views, especially if your views aren't being widely vocalized around you. Case in point: It's just been announced that J.J.Abrams will be directing Star Wars 7, and the internet is raging with butthurt about how shitty Abrams is, making over abundant lens flare jokes, and bemoaning the reboot of Star Trek in the process.Controversial Opinions2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Thing is... I like J.J.Abrams. I liked LOST (despite it's shitty/rushed ending). I liked Super 8. I liked Cloverfield. I even enjoyed the recent Star Trek reboot and am looking forward to the sequel. I never had a problem with lens flares or noticed them being over used. And I think overall Abrams has made a fairly consistent batch of quality movies, which is a amazing considering how many directors flip flop between great and shitty.
But I can't often come right out and say that sort of thing because when I do I get attacked for having an opinion that runs counter to the vast majority o
Syn's Dithering TutorialWhat is dithering?Syn's Dithering Tutorial2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Dithering is a pixel art process used to blend blocks of colour together or help apply a texture to a pixelled surface. Within emoticons it is most commonly used when making pixelled backgrounds, however it can be used in a number of other areas, e.g. massive emote bases, pixel objects etc. In this tutorial, we will focus on how 2 colours can be blended with dithering.
To break dithering down into simple terms, it is achieved by simply taking the colours from the two blocks of colour and placing individual pixels of each on the opposite side. This creates a region where the two colours merge together to create a more blended colour transition instead of a clear line between the two.
Dithering can seem like a complex process, but it's really not. Once you get the basic idea and technique, it's just all about practice and over time you'll learn how to apply it to a number of different situations. There are many dithering styles which can be
I Hate April Fools DayNot because I’ve ever “been the fool” in a April 1st Prank or anything, but more or less because I have to endure the MONTHS upon MONTHS of people who unironically believe whatever bullshit joke a company decided to make on the internet that day.I Hate April Fools Day10 months ago in Personal More Like This
Some companies do the joke well, like YouTube when they announced the complete YouTube DVD collection, or when they turned all the videos into old timey black and white film strips.
But others, more commonly associated with the entertainment media, usually just create a fake new story that unfortunately spreads like wild-fire. I STILL see people unironically blaming Nintendo for never releasing Wind Waker with updated Twilight Princess models and textures.... based on an april fools joke made in 2005!
And part of the ire I have about this day comes from how VOLATILE and quick to HATE on everything is on the internet. Nobody actually stops and thinks before they post anything, so jokes like this usually just end up devolving i
How to improve painting techniquesBeing a better PainterHow to improve painting techniques1 year ago in Personal More Like This
In the past few months, I have been asked again and again how can one improve painting skills. Each time it took a long time to provide an answer which due to the lack of time was somehow incomplete; hence I decided to submit this journal to present in an ordered format all resources for all who wish to know how to go to the next level.
The following suggestions and resources worked for me and might not necessarily work for all, but keep in mind that within the time span of two years I managed to bring up my skills from sub zero to being able to paint anything through these resources and completely self thought. So if it worked for me, it could also work for you. The other things that you should keep in mind before going through resources is that: A) here gathered I the best resources there is, but almost noun spoon feed you so you ne
Educating OurselvesThis journal contains a lot of potentially buzz-work things that could result in arguments from people who don't take the time to read my message. For example I mention Anita Sarkeesian, but I don't want people to start arguing against her points of view because that's NOT what this journal is about. So please, read carefully before you respond to help avoid knee-jerk reactions since that's exactly what this journal is about trying to AVOID.Educating Ourselves11 months ago in Personal More Like This
Over the years I’ve had a pretty straightforward view on gun control. Guns are dangerous and need to be restricted and made more inaccessible to prevent future acts of gun violence. I’ve never genuinely believed in the idea of banning all guns because I do think people DO need to have ways to protect themselves.
However, I’ve recently been thinking more about a different aspect to the gun control debate and it’s broader implications to other troublesome politically charged areas of our (United States) cult
Socially AwkwardI like the internet, but I acknowledge that it's not perfect. The ability for everyone to be the invisible man allows for a lot of injustice, bullying, harassment, and stalking to take place. This is slowly starting to change, however, thanks to every website gradually forcing people to link to their facebook (or other social media equivalent) accounts. No one wants to lose their personal social outlets as a result of the stuff they were doing elsewhere on the web, if you know what I mean. But... with all good things there are some bad things.Socially Awkward2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I don't know if it's just me, but I'm getting really creeped out how by how much everything is getting connected these days. Nearly every website asks me to post about stuff on facebook or twitter or reddit or whatever. Many websites don't even have personal accounts anymore and just have you link your social media accounts instead. And all of them want to update everyone on your every move 24/7.
And that's what's bothering me. I don't want every

On Humor and Grittyness in Movies/Video GamesI'm getting really sick of the idea that the only good action movies or video games are ones where everything is all serious and dark. It's the whole "gritty" concept blown to extremes. But through all the countless games I've played and movies I've watched, I think that we could back off a bit from being too damn serious and have some fun once in a while. On Humor and Grittyness in Movies/Video Games2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Take the latest Die Hard movie as a prime example. From the start it's a dark, gritty, almost monochromatic movie with a 20 minute car chase sequence at the beginning so over-the-top that it's almost cartoony. But the way it's shot is atrocious and there's no character development what-so-ever that 40 minutes into the film I was looking at the clock wondering not only "when will this be over," but also "what the f*** did I just watch?"
Contrast that to something like Independence Day. People like to rag on Independence Day because it's so "goofy" and "absurd." But what helps the film is that we're given time to enjoy the characters s
History Repeats ItselfLast week a Connecticut action group going by the name of SouthingtonSOS held a video game burning event where local citizens were encouraged to bring various forms of violent media to be burned in a dumpster, no doubt a reaction to the recent Connecticut shooting.History Repeats Itself2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I wish I could say I am surprised about this, but sadly the whole media frenzy surrounding violence in video games and movies reminds me of something that already happened once and profoundly affected the media it was accusing: Comic books.
During the early days of comic books, things occasionally got a little risqué. EC Horror comics in particular delighted in rendering extremely gruesome images and disturbing themes in their comics, which were being sold to children unbeknownst to their parents (because naive parents at the time had no reason to suspect comics might contain "inappropriate" material). However all that changed in 1954.
German-American psychiatrist Fredric Wertham was upset about how disturbing some of those

I have always loved anthologies. Growing up in Britain 95 percent of the comics were weekly anthologies so it has been firmly ingrained in my psyche.
I've always felt that anthologies are a good platform for experimentation, trying new ideas and styles, introducing new talent and especially good to read in the bathroom. I'll never forget the impression Heavy Metal had on me when I first saw it.
They're perfect for those moments when you've read through the 100 comics you've bought that month and realized there wasn't a single complete story in the pile.
I've recently relaunched two previously successful anthologies, A1 and MONSTER MASSACRE.

Why Cynical Improvement Is Bad For YouSince we're on the subject of taboos, I feel it necessary to talk about this one. This one pisses me off and it's very much a cornerstone to a bigger issue with our artistic community: The idea and assumption that as an artist you MUST improve at all times. 24/7. No exceptions. Every work you produce must be 10x better than your last. You must constantly strive for perfection. To ignore this "truth" is to commit the terrible sin of rejecting the very concept of improvement, and you will never break out of your "comfort zone."Why Cynical Improvement Is Bad For You2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I'm here to tell you that this is hogwash.
You should strive to improve. Never say that I don't encourage improvement. It's why you go to school, why you go to college, and why after college you continue to work on your art. You always want to be better. The problem is that far too many people have a strictly binary concept of what "better" is and on how to "improve."
First off, there is no pinnacle of perfection. There is no
How is your Chroma? As artists we all know that color is our friend, whether full spectrum, monochromatic, or simply black and white. But knowing just how to use this very special friend can be frustrating at times or just downright confusing (trust me, I've been there plenty before!) This blog is for those of us who work traditionally (not to worry my futuristic friends, I'll be writing a blog specifically for you as well!) Here are some terms you need to become acquainted with: chroma, value, tint, shade, and intensity/saturation.How is your Chroma?2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
What is Chroma?
Chroma is the Greek word for "color", it refers to the purity or intensity of a color.
What is Value?
Value is the lightness or darkness of a color.
What is a Tint?
Tinting a color means lightening it by adding white.
What is a shade?
Shading a color means darkening it by adding black.
What is intensity and saturation?

'Don't Feed the Trolls' needs to die.I wish I was joking, but another bout of sexual harassment against women creeped up this week (only days after the Might No. 9 fiasco). This time in the form of an indi video game a woman is trying to get green-lit to Steam. The game is about depression and is just suppose to help people understand what it’s like living with it, and for this “grievous” action she’s been the target of harassment campaigns. She’s received harassing phone calls, death threats, her personal information and addresses posted for everyone to see. She’s had to change her phone number to stop the harassment, and even pulled the game originally to try and calm this crap down.'Don't Feed the Trolls' needs to die.1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Bravely, she’s decided to post it anyway and is trying desperately to showcase how awful, hurtful, and disgusting our gaming community can be when we stay silent.
You can “justify” your reasons for hating her. You can convince yourself that sending her harassment and hate messages is for

Especially when you have quite a lot of artworks in your gallery, it can become tricky to manage your deviations and to sort through them.
That's why we have the manage deviations page. You can either access it via the direct link or by choosing "Manage Deviations" from the Submit Menu.
On that page you have listed your deviations & journals. The overview will give you the name, the category it was submitted to, the publishing date and it also lists your sharing options and if critiques and comments are enabled or disabled.
When hovering over your deviation title, you will also get a little preview of that deviation. This helps to know what deviation you are going to edit, when you can't remember what title goes with what deviation.
