Made time to create this in between work. I actually had a bunch of sketches which I chose this one from. Wish I could paint up another one but time is ultra short! There are so many awesome entries already! Just entering for fun really... Good luck y'all!
I wanted to create a follow-on image from the original poster. A 'later-in-the-day' version, when things have turned sour and that Fan has seen some heavy action.
Also wanted to focus more on the grittiness and bleakness of the War & the World. Was thinking of epic last stands and fights-against-the-odds.
The 4 main figures stayed pretty much the sme from the original sketch but the two ladies went through a number of pose edits. I did a version with one of them getting shot/wouned with some blood spatter but decided to edit it for the contest. The flag bearer was originally looking backwards towards the nuclear explosion but as this was thier last stand I wanted her more involved. In the end they are all focused on thier Nemesis who lurks just off camera.
My most complex piece to date and I feel that I did achieve what I was aiming for. Will probably do some minor tweaking and balancing once I have a few days break from it.
Great experience and very happy to have been a part of the contest. Thanks to all the folks involved in hosting the event!
Everything is painted in PS with the exception of some clouds from the provided material. I wanted to paint my own characters but also make sure that they were instantly identified.
After failing to obtain the 9 fragments of The Scientists soul - The Machine, robbed of its own spark of life was thought to have been destroyed. It was left - broken, crushed, and dying. Yet having been spawned from the mind and drive of man, The Machine's will to survive was imperishable. Refusing to give in to the blackness, it called to its spawns for aid. Heeding its call, they came to help, but were instead mercilessly consumed. The Machine began feeding on the shards of itself, dwelling within the thousands of its underlings spread across the land. Yet the more it fed, the more it hungered...
Soon all things, great and small, learned to fear the coming of the black cloud. Even those which had once served its will, now fled from before it - knowing that being caught meant a fate much worse than death...
Born from a thousand tormented minds, fused together by wrath and driven by hunger and rage - Knowing only one purpose: To live...survive...grow. To live that it may find those filthy rags who sought to destroy it. Soon they too will be found - They too will be a part of it - And they too will know the fury of The Hive Mind.
Okay so this is like part 1 of my entry for the 9 Creature contest. Yes, there will be more. Involving THIS invention creature thing, too. c: (Which for the meantime is called the PEST-X)
SPEAKING OF WHICH, this is what my invention DOESSSS: The PEST-X was invented to kill household pests, both indoors and outdoors (Rats, mice, gophers, cockroaches, termites, etc). When the B.R.A.I.N turned on the Chancellor and the rest of humanity, and began making these critters to attack any living thing, there was chaos. PEST-X are fairly weak if there's only one or two of them, but if there's a ton of them, they wreak havoc. Their middle arms/claws are used for ripping and tearing flesh, fabric, or wires. Their movements are kinda like a mix of spider and cat movements, they skitter, and are VERY fast and agile, they can leap and pounce, though they depend on a rougher terrain so that their needlefeet can grip onto something. They're super easy to destroy, though. A rock dropped on one, or one of their exposed wires being snipped would finish them off. The main problem is that there are so many of them. When humanity was destroyed, they numbered in the thousands. Thankfully, at the point of the movie, there are only around 30 left, that band together in a single pack. PEST-X has three 'eyes', one on the front, and one on each side of the head. The 'eyes' are actually motion, heat, and sound sensors. When PEST-X was a mainstream device on the market, it would've been covered with a plastic and looked very neat and sleek. As time went on, plastic cracked and fell off, and some other parts needed repairing. Paperclips were added in place of plastic for added flexibility, leathery fabric was stretched over the inner mechanisms in order to protect them, and sharp objects poking out of the back were added to protect the otherwise exposed back. Tweezers were added for the head instead of the plastic design, the tweezers are good for picking at strings and wires. The legs and feet were replaced with needles, which are good for pinning things down. c: Thus we come to this current look of PEST-X. YAY.
I'm gonna go eat something now. :T
um if you support this entry... you could fav it? LOL I'm lame, I'm sorry. DARN MY COMPETITIVENESS asdbaskhfbasdhfasd
I really liked the idea of EVE Online (I can't afford to play 2 online mmo's so unfortunatly I'm not playing it), and then this contest pops up on Deviantart. It looked like a really fun challenge and I'm in need of some portfolio work anyway so I decided to enter the EVE Online contest.
Letumos Punisher class Assault ship 60m x 55m x 35m
First thing I did was put down some shapes and silhouettes, I did this to see what kind of ship I was going to make. Although my girlfriend is a big fan of huge starships I decided to go with a smaller ship, a swift strike ship made for combat. So looking at those silhouettes I picked the one that just looked the coolest to me.
Next step was to take this silhouette and turn it into some rough concept art. Just black thick lines. But this wouldn't do for the orthographical view that was required by the contest.
So i took the piece of concept art into 3d and started modeling out the basic forms of the ship. Adding detail as I went from engines to the guns, etc.
When I was done with those I rendered out the 6 views in 1 color with wires. Took them into photoshop and started adding/removing details. And finally pushing some color behind those lines to emphasize some parts of the machinery.
Finally I took the standard hard brush and made a perspective view to get a better feel of the spacecraft.
I'm pleased to say it came out great and I'm happy with it. I would definitly pilot this Assault ship!
