Tolkien Illustrator’s First Aid Kit: Elves
Tolkien’s texts are notable for their abundance of characters, many of them mentioned perhaps only once, other playing very important parts in the stories. However, it is often very difficult to find any description of how those characters look, and this is what we, artists and illustrators, are usually most concerned with.
So here it is – Tolkien Illustrator’s First Aid Kit – a list of all those characters, whose physical appearance is mentioned in the texts, including The Silmarillion and The History of the Middle-earth.
To start with, the Elves. As we know, during the march from Cuiviënén t
The Hobbit. Jacksonised or: Pimp my Dwarf!UpdatesThe Hobbit. Jacksonised or: Pimp my Dwarf!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
As I read the Hobbit to my son, as Smaug lies buried under the waters of the Long Lake and as Elves, Dwarves, Men and Orcs are drawn to the Lonely Mountain by greed, I stumble over promo photos of the Hobbit http://www.herr-der-ringe-film.de/v3/de/news/tolkienfilme/news_72192.php and am reduced to disbelief.
Of course, I should have known. The target audience are the "Lotr" fans, the ones who have never read the books (probably tried, but gave up after "Concerning Hobbits"), who can't even be bothered to spell out the title of what they call their favourite book (or movie), who whooped with glee when Legolas surfed down the stairs of Helm's Deep on a shield or when Viggo, Orly and that alcoholic of a Dwarf kung-fu'd their way towards Théoden, and whom Jackson expects to be clamouring for more of the same in The Hobbit. He couldn't have made it a children's movie, no, of course not.
Thus, those lovable, squabbling Dwarves, who have only bread knives (which they lose
Myths and Legends Across the WorldMyths and legends are somewhere deep in the subconscious of every nation, often unique and wonderful tales, yet different from other stories - once they were alive. People lived with them, considered them true... and in a way, they are all true. They are a part of our heritage, and with every legend forgotten, something inside us dies. I wandered wide and far through dA to gather these tales. Sit down by the fire and listenMyths and Legends Across the World3 years ago in Art Features More Like This

Stop the perfectionismOn my Tumblr site someone asked me for some general advice for an aspiring comic creator. This is what was on my mind. Thought I'd share it here on Deviantart as well.Stop the perfectionism3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Right now all I can think of is something I've been thinking about lately. And that is the depression some of us artists get about our art. Like our expectations aren't just "My drawings need to be good!", they are "My art needs to be PERFECT."
So I would suggest always try to improve, gain confidence, but expect good/average output. Don't expect perfect art, ever. By doing this only causes you to be frustrated, which in turn causes mistakes, which pisses you off more, then you're stuck in a lame spiraling circle downward to the pathetic whiny artist. Which in turn kills your deadline. Giving yourself freedom from perfection makes drawing much easier and better art is produced and on time.
I'm currently working on this piece where it started out difficult, I had high expectations for it, I was in a bad mood, nothing was

I decided to put my knowledge to use, for the benefit of our artistic community and all people out there trying to thrive.
As I've written in my ID, I'm a literature and language teacher. I've been working hard to get my master degree in French Literature and Narrative Theories, which will come latter this year.
And as for this, I thought I could be at your service to read your literature deviations and post you honest constructive critics based on the best of world wide letters!
But I have to be clear about one thing: I am not the kind of person that only say what you might want to hear.
I will never be rude or disrespectful BUT... it is needed of me to say sometimes things you may not agree or accept.
If you ask me for a critic don't be upset if I eventually point an aspect of your composition that needs to be improved.
I'm sure that it's not
Power BreakdownOH MY GOSH YOU GUYS. He's just AMAZING.Power Breakdown1 year ago in Personal More Like This
:iconcalculatus: This guy decided to make a breakdown of abilities of Blaze and Penn for me and there are some crazy stuff here!
Check it out!!!))
You gave us a few of Blaze's and Penn's abilities in the past but I decided that it wasn't good enough for me, so I fleshed their powers out some more by taking their skills and physical and spiritual properties of fire into account.
·Fire flows in his blood, making him immune to all foreign contaminants such as poison and disease.
o This would lead to regenerative healing factor since the flames would be constantly cauterizing his wounds. This is kind of like how phoenixes heal themselves.
Fire elementals are abnormally strong since fire spiritually represents strength.
·He holds a symbiotic bond with fire, and can emit* it from his body through fire breath, explosions, flame armor, rocket-propelle
This is why you (and your art) get ignored.People often get the sense of being ignored in the art-scene, especially here online. We all try so hard to get our foot in the door, it's like trying to stuff yourself in an overfull bus like a sardine in a can. This is why you (and your art) get ignored.5 months ago in Personal More Like This
Sometimes you just want to socialize with other artists you admire and you seem to be talking into a brick wall or perhaps you've send your portfolio to a company over a dozen times and still don't even seem to get the smallest response or feedback. I will try and tell you WHY you get ignored and HOW you can get noticed instead.
I will go through the following cases of being ignored:
Do know, that even though being ignored feels very personal it's hardly ever personal at all!
Your comment(s) gets ignored.
It happens ever so often. You notice an artwork or a discussion and you weigh in with your opinion or admiration, perhaps even some feedback? T

The chaptered comic strip, has been collected into a 100-page graphic novel – and to the still-uninitiated:
It is not quite like anything you’ve probably ever seen before. The story follows “Zee Captain” and his sidekicks as they amble through a post-apocalyptic landscape. And while that hardly seems new and different, it’s the unusually superlative graphic quality of the comic cells and the Monty Pythonesque dialogues and leaps of logic that can become quite mesmerizing. Zee Captain, his face hidden by a gas mask that gives him a Darth Vaderish look, wears what looks like a Soviet Red Army uniform from WWII, and the strip does have nourish WWII feel. It’s as if the nuclear holocaust on Hiroshima and Nagasaki had never ended and spread to every major city on Earth. But
Notes on Character DesignI received the question pictured below at my tumblr blog. In case it's useful to anyone here, I decided to go ahead and use this otherwise dormant journal to share the article I put together in response.Notes on Character Design1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Character design and drawing are tome-sized topics and even if I had all the answers (I don't - I have a lot to learn), I'm not sure I could communicate them effectively. Here are some thoughts an ideas that might help, though.
First, some general things...
Let some of that anxiety go. This isn't a hard science. There's no wrong way, no rigid process you must adhere to, no shoulds or shouldn'ts except those you designate for yourself. This is one of the fun parts of being an artist, really - have a heady good time with it.
- Be patient.
A design is something gradually arrived at. It takes time and iteration and revision. You'll throw a lot of stuff away, and you'll i

Sometimes in youth we play crazy mind games. One gruesome game was trying to think of the worst way to die. Or even better, the "which would you choose" version of the same conceit. Another was what would be the worst torture to endure. If there is one international touchstone that best captures youthful fears and wonders in speculation of what lies beyond the veil of death and awaits as possible punishment for our sins, it must be - to the few who have actually read it to the millions who "know" it – "Dante's Inferno." Who does not shiver at the thought of being lost somewhere in the "Nine Rings of Hell?"

A Gallery of Narrative Dreams
A magic of effective art can be a drawing that appears to be a movie still, clipped from a film narrative, evoking a powerful sense of storytelling— and the viewer wants to know the rest of the story. This phenomenon has recently manifested itself on deviantART— and in a big way— once again.
