Some thoughts on commissions from a commissioner.I commission art a lot. I've commissioned from many different artists all over the world. And after several years here are a few on my own personal thoughts on commissionsSome thoughts on commissions from a commissioner.4 years ago in Personal More Like This
1. List you prices.
- Whether its flat rates or by the hour, artists that commissions should list their rates. Most the time the old saying "If you have to ask, it probably costs to much." really comes into play here. I'm so much more likely to commission someone where I can gauge my budget. I myself am a single income family of five. That means I have a budget. A budget means I shop around. So that means when I am comparing artists if I know what I can spend with one and not the other, I'm more likely to go with the one I know I can budget.
2. List your customers.
- It is so much easier for a person to know where they stand when you have them listed.
2˝. Update your customers.
- Most artists have an idea how long something is going to take. Now it's understandable that the idea isn't always acc

Communist Party of DeviantART Turns Ten.Dear comrades of the CPDA,Communist Party of DeviantART Turns Ten.3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Today marks a milestone in our Party's existence. Today we mark ten years of struggle, solidarity, and artistic expression for the cause of Communism. The CPDA has come a long way in one decade, from a simple user account created for discussion and art-sharing into a several hundred strong group of people, with over one thousand watchers. Only within recent years has the Party organized itself, with the formation of a leading committee, specific goals, a web blog, and numerous affiliates to newer groups dedicated to fighting the good fight.
We have done all of this and continued our aims of education through writings, both theoretical and inspirational, as well collecting thousands of images as resources for all comrades wishing to spread our message. Of course, we still have much work to do. Our tasks are not nearly over, not so long as the bourgeoisie controls the means of production, not so long as there are reactionary forces left to be vanquished.

The tragedy of owning a motorcycle is that it sometimes must be “driven” instead of “ridden.” One must occasionally “drive” one’s bike to the store for a loaf of bread or to execute some other mundane activity unworthy of being a “motorcycle rider.” One is meant to ride, not drive, a bike—as it were a contentious beast forever being tamed. A bike should not be just a vehicle for the conveyance of bodies and materials. Riding should be transformative. A rider becomes one with the natural world being riven in twain by the wake of his bike’s passing. A rider becomes a living metaphor. A rid

Freya: The Goddess of Love
One day, Thor's hammer was stolen. Loki searched for it, and found that the giant Thrym had hidden the hammer, and refused to give it back unless Freya became his wife. The gods worked out a plan to get the hammer back while keeping Freya safe. Thor was dressed up as a beautiful woman and Freya even lent him her neckalce. Thor had a bristling red beard, so he must have looked ridiculous! He was sent to the giant and Loki went with him. At first the giant was worried about his bride's enormous appetite and fierce eyes, but Loki convinced him that it was Freya. Finally, the giant brought out Thor's hammer, and gave it to his new bride. Thor gave an enormous roar, tore off his wedding dress, and killed the giant with his hammer.

Elon Musk might be the most prolific inventor and entrepreneur since Thomas Edison — that’s a somewhat ironic comparison for a man who named his company after Edison’s greatest rival, but there’s some truth to it. Chile 1973: The OTHER 9/11 AnniversaryFrom The Guardian by Raúl Zibechi, September 11, 2010Chile 1973: The OTHER 9/11 Anniversary3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Of the many military coups faced by the republics of Latin America, it is the coup of 11 September 1973 that has engraved itself most permanently on the collective memory. The images of the bombing of the Moneda Palace, of the despair on the face of Salvador Allende shortly before his suicide, of the defiant expression worn by Pinochet behind his dark glasses and of the public burning of books that circulated around the world and became the symbol of military brutality.
The dispersal into exile of 200,000 Chileans, most of them to Europe, added to the media images of men and women who had seen their lives destroyed by the death or disappearance of friends and relatives. The murder of thousands of political opponents and the detention and torture of people who were identified with the constitutional government isolated the military regime internationally.
The coup was supported by the US government of Richard Nixon. But a

Sketchbook Pro 6So most of you know that I'm a Sketchbook Pro user.Sketchbook Pro 63 years ago in Personal More Like This
A few days back, Autodesk released Sketchbook Pro 6, and I think this is the version that's going to make a lot of people who have YET to experience Sketchbook Pro in full, or haven't really given the past versions a chance, switch over to making it their digital drawing software of choice; heck, even their PAINTING software of choice.
We still have the cleverly-designed user interface, that makes it easy on the eyes and mind when we're brainstorming and sketching. With the handful of new tools introduced, we still have a clutter-free drawing environment, and man, there's some awesome tools this time around. I'll go down the list:
The Brush Library
The main brush toolbar itself has a click-and-drag function, allowing you to store all your often-used brushes in each of the "lanes". You then can click the button on the upper-right and then a fu

They say a picture can tell a thousand words... but what about a thousand words telling a picture? That's the goal of every writer, and if they're not Alan Moore, then seeing their work brought to life through someone else's imagination is one of the greatest thrills of writing. This year I held my second contest challenging artists to breathe their life into my words, and this year's entries have astounded me. Last year's entries were good, but this year's were more and better, and it blew me away. I feel both honored and disappointed that I cannot reward more of you.
But I had to choose. It was not an easy choice, and in the end I had to turn to the advice of some trusted friends and discuss the merits of these pieces with them. I both love and hate this part, because as much as I know I'm making some peoples' days, I know I have to break a few hearts (or at least disappoint them) too. And so, without any more adi

Tutorial: Custom Raised-Relief GlobeIf you are a worldbuilder or mapmaker working at a global scale, it can be helpful to have an actual globe to guide you. If your world is an alternate Earth, then you are in luck. You can go to Amazon or troll the thrift stores and garage sales for a cheap globe of the Earth. All done.Tutorial: Custom Raised-Relief Globe4 months ago in Personal More Like This
For the rest of us, the globe we need cannot be found in any thrift store. So we make our own.
The above is an 8 inch desktop decorative globe I bought at a furniture store. Globes run for about $15-$30 at stores, or cheaper if you can find them used. What you want is a sturdily built globe with no raised relief.
Accuracy is not important. Any out-of-date borders and countries will be slathered over with a couple coats of gesso. Gesso is a type of acrylic paint that creates a toothed surface that can be painted on. You can buy it at any art store in bulk for pretty cheap. It's a good thing to have around.
Simple ThingsI feel how my Angel walks with me,Simple Things4 years ago in Personal More Like This
creating fog that slowly surrounds my surroundings...
Have the little urge to touch that Angel.
Her white, soft... fragile skin,
wearing sweet, tasteful perfume,
driving me lightly insane.
I might love her.
I might even hate her.
Miss her, being not real
or she is real, but I just have no right to reach out my hand,
so I could satisfy my need to hold somebody in my embrace.
Our minds are for simple things...
I can't even catch her with my hazy eyes,
afraid that she might see my look, so needy.
It is so hard and that's why -
Things are not of mind to simplify
and all I can do is imagine her to grin.
That innocent, toothpaste commercial smile.
I'm nothing but full of sadness
and she really doesn't mind...
if in a moment I just disappear into the darkness.
Nothing but Bible-black fool,
who's trying to walk on... carry on,
on this jumpy ground.
No living creature is with me on this deserted road,
once belonged to God,
now to emptiness in our hearts and so

Commissions Contracts: A Must Have. Yes, there is a lot to read and Yes you should read it. Copy it, paste it and edit it to suit your needs as a commissioner or commissioned artist. Protect yourself by drafting a contract and understanding it.</a>Commissions Contracts: A Must Have.7 years ago in Art Features More Like This
It has come to my attention that many deviants commission their work and hold proceedings entirely over deviantArt. In the case that your client/commissioned artist begins to use and distribute your work illegally you will need to have a greater standing than simply a bunch of e-mail print outs if you are to go to court over the matter of misuse. Often the matter is over misunderstanding, which a contract will also help clarify for both parties.
I cannot stress how important it is when doing commissions to have physical signed copies of an Artist/Client Commission Agreement or at the very least a signed confirmation of engagement. It takes longer to organise, especially with overseas clients, but it protects the rights of both parties to the work and is worth the day or so

I have never found a companion who was so companionable as solitude.
Henry David Thoreau
By :icontechgnotic: techgnotic
I I always thought of Thoreau’s comment as simply a word game — clever but ultimately false at its core. A Valentines Day without a Valentine means being alone and alone means being unhappy. It’s taken many years to finally understand the truth in Thoreau’s words. We are never so alone as when in the company of loving family and friends, our Valentine companion held tight in our arms – but knowing we are lost, unfulfilled in our dreams and visions, and untrusting in our own inner counsel. Now I hope to one day seek companions

deviantArt is home for a great variety of artists, some of whom own a very distinctive style and are instantly recognizable. Today I want to present you one of those artists. At first if you look at Que-ink's gallery you might think you're looking at a photography gallery, with close-ups to some of today's greatest hockey athletes. However if you look closer you'll notice they're actually not photographs but digital paintings. Impressive enough right? Look even closer and you'll discover her paintings are not made with the use of complicated digital software and tools. But I'll let Sylvia explains that herself...
My name is Sylvia and I go by the username Que-ink. For the last 15 years I have been into art while studying realism for 8. I am known for my athletic portraits
