Advice on becoming a better artistI get asked by a lot of younger artists (and moms and grandmothers) for advice on getting better and becoming a professional comic artist. Hopefully this will help. Ask me more questions if I'm not clear enough and I'll try to post more about what I think makes a good artist and how to become a professional in the comic industry.Advice on becoming a better artist2 years ago in Personal More Like This
If you're not already aware, I'm a self-taught artist with little to no schooling on the subject. I thought I knew how to draw when I was a kid and I thought that drawing from shapes and building your characters out of forms was stupid. I don't know what the proper term for this is so I'm going to refer to it as construction drawing or under drawing throughout this post. My parents had purchased me some how to draw books, I also went to art class, and both of these tried to get me to use construction drawing techniques. Unfortunately I didn't understand the value of it and thus rejected it. I didn't need to build a tiger out of blocks, circles,

A brief word on storytelling
The MOCC is a storytelling competition.
Essentially that means how well you tell your story using images.
This means we should able to roughly follow your story even without words.
Keep it simple, but make it clear.
Linking or crossing over your stories is cool,
but poor storytelling in order to do so will hurt your score.
No one should break their storytelling flow to try to connect to another persons storyline just to shoehorn someone else's narrative.
To make that work each contestant doing so would have to tell both sides of the story so that their story would have context.

Firefly by Lucas-Zebroski
Even though the television show Firefly only aired for 1 season in 2002, it is mourned by fans till this day. The space-western comedy-drama featuring a renegade crew of misfits who raided to the ends of the universe in their spaceship, Serenity, and called it an honest day’s work, was quick to steal many a viewer’s heart.
Creator Joss Whedon drew inspiration from many sources for the show. Inspiration

Have you ever wondered who the most popular characters are at DeviantART?
I liked danlev's recent post on Trending deviantART Search Terms in October. It got me thinking about popular characters on DeviantART in terms of deviation count. I'm going to need some help with this research project.
Help Wanted, Reward Offered
Search for a character and submit the number of deviations found. You can post a screenshot or just put the number in a comment. Find a Top-10 character and get 100 points. Find a Top-50 character and get 10 points. Each person that faves this journal will get 1 point. If multiple people submit the same character, the first person gets the points.

How to Become a WriterNeed help on writing? Take a look what I found on "How to Become a Writer"How to Become a Writer3 years ago in Personal More Like This
(This is not my words)
1. Consider all of the options. Not everyone can create a blockbuster novel. Anyone with passion might be able to earn a living from writing. Copy-writing is probably the highest paid skill on the Internet. Article writing is in great demand for providing content for websites. Creative writers are in demand to bid for projects every day. So the first step in how to become a writer is to research all of the options.
2. Plan using logic and desire. Write the way you want, but decide whether or not you want to rely on the income from your writing. Not having a regular job will allow you to focus on your writing, but it's very unlikely that you'll be able to depend on it for at least a few years. Then you might get bored.
3. Think about what you want to write, instead of what you want to get from writing. You won't get anywhere if all you're after is money.
4. Be prepared to work odd hours -- y

I was inspired to create this series by naikki while looking through her gallery of diverse artwork and reading through her journals which are focused on her favorite inspiring writers and thinkers. I felt certain there must be beautiful artwork in the form of portraits and tributes to these writers and their stories. I found most of naikki's choices of quotes to be inclusionary, redeeming and welcoming to any artist on their own path. Instead of just crediting naikki with the inspiration for this new series on depthRADIUS, I also invited her to provide a quote about Herman Hesse of her own to kick off this series.

STFU About Male PrivilegeIf perchance you encounter a feminist complaining about "male privilege", show them this chart, and hopefully, it will shut them up—if they're intellectually honest (which is a big "if" for feminists!):STFU About Male Privilege2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Reminds me of an excellent Duckman rant: "Like I'm supposed to take women on how they 'feel' seriously? You want to be accepted for your minds, but you throw a hissy fit royale if someone isn't saying you look great 30 hours a day. You say you want a nice guy but you only give it up to the creeps. You get to stay home, not go to war, live longer, and have sex whenever you want. So remind me again: exactly what is there to complain about?"

Some of you may have noticed by now, that I am a pretty high energy person. I like to stay positive and goal oriented, and I love what I do! I am fortunate that I get to work a career that allows me to do what I love, every day. I also enjoy the community that we are building, here! You know, out of all the comments and messages I get, I rarely receive anything negative, or mean. I understand that's pretty rare, for most online content creators. I can't put my finger on why, but I have been very fortunate in reaching very awesome, positive people, with my art. And yes, I am talking about all of you, reading this.
Though, the part of my personality that drives me forward can also be a bit overbearing, at times. I am one of those people who feels the need to fix any problem that is presented to me. No matter what issue it is, I can't help but immediately attempt to come up with a solution. I have personally overcome great adversity, t

Sing 'Yesterday' for MeA week ago, my favorite manga 'Sing Yesterday for Me' came to an end after 18 years of serialization. To celebrate the end of the most important story in my life, I decided to do a little fan video about this manga.Sing 'Yesterday' for Me8 months ago in Personal More Like This
Took me five days to make a storyboard and paint all the scenes.
Lines are done with pencil on paper, colors done in Photoshop.
All the scenes are based on the original scenes and characters from the manga.

I'm tired of playing this game of social chessSigh, something made me reach my breaking point today.I'm tired of playing this game of social chess1 year ago in Personal More Like This
To those of you who take the time to read this, thank you. In all likelihood I'm not referring to you.
I'm just exhausted and emotionally tired of playing games of social chess. Here on DA, there are artists who are upper tier or level. It varies based on your popularity or circles you swim in, but suffice it to say there is a pattern.
If you can draw well on this site, more often than not people will go out of their way to be nice to you or stroke your ego or what have you. Some people I know and called friends, or once called friends, do this.
They won't wnt to talk to or with you unless you compliment their stuff, try to pat them on the back when they get in a pity party over one of their colleagues having more fan art or faves than them, or people criticising their ill developed work.
Don't get me wrong. These guys are good, they're talented at art, but they need to grow the hell up and get some damn confidence (in some cases)
