From my TIP GUIDE:
"A LOT of people ask me, HOW DO YOU COMPLETE SO MANY DRAWINGS? It's because I draw so small! Yes, size does matter in drawing! I read that if you make a drawing just 20% larger, will take up to 50% more time to draw. So a drawing that takes me 10 hours, would take me 15 hours if I only increased it by 20% in size! I spend at least 10 minutes JUST planning the perfect size of the drawing. First, I set my printer on draft setting, and I print 2 or 3 test prints of the reference photo, then I compare them to my past drawings, and based on that, I can pretty much tell how much time it's going to take me to draw!

This helps me to determine how long it will take, and how much detail I can fit into a certain space. I have personally found that the IDEAL size for ME is to keep the total face size between 5 to 6 INCHES from the hairline to the bottom of the chin. If itís TOO big, there are too many details to ignore, it will take forever to finish, and I also find that the larger size affects my wrist motion while blending. If it is too small, then obviously you cannot draw the details. However, there is a perfect size, at least in my mind, which is the perfect compromise of time vs. details allowed. For ME, it is about finding this balance, between the level of details and how long it takes me to complete, because I personally loose interest fast, and want to move on to a new subject. I have my total AVERAGE drawing time down to somewhere between 6 to 8 hours."

UN-enlarged view is slightly larger than the drawing :D:D

Dave Matthews of the "Dave Matthews Band"

SIZE: 5-3/4 x 6-3/4 Inches
TIME: about 7 hours
PAPER: Strathmore Bristol Smooth 300 series
PENCILS: Staedtler Mars Lumograph H, HB, F, B, 2B
TOOLS: Blending stumps, Kneaded eraser

One thing you will notice is that there are no "highlight reflections" in his eyes. I noticed that too in the photo. Makes it look different.

(The drawing is smaller than the ENLARGED view but larger than the small view)

I think this is from the movie "THE ALAMO"? That's supposed to be dirt on his face, not shadows :D:D

I've been meaning to draw John Wayne for my father for a long time.

SIZE: 8 x 10 inches
PAPER: Bristol Smooth
PENCILS: Staedtler 2B, B, HB, F, H

NOTE: the UN-enlarged view is the ACTUAL SIZE of the original drawing :D:D

This is the FINAL. I've had a lot of people ask me to do some step scans for Blonde hair, and thought this would be a good one.

Katie Herzig is a Singer-Songwriter from Nashville, and is amazingly talented! She is also part of the highly acclaimed group of Singer-Songwriters known as the "Ten out of Tenn" (Tennessee), along with my son, Andrew Belle. Katie is the one who sang on his song "Static Waves"

Just thought I'd load the Reference and the 2 WIP scans I took.

First, I cropped the colored reference photo I found on Google.com/images

and then, I converted it to B & W so I can see the contrast better.

I just uploaded my first attempt at an EYE tutorial here: [link]
I will most likely do another one, using a LARGE EYE that does NOT belong to a drawing I'm doing.

You should still get something out of my comments?

I JUST uploaded PART 2 so give it a minute to process.

Also consider subscribing to my Youtube Channel as I will be doing a LOT of these in the future.

UN-enlarged view is about the size of the actual drawing :D:D

I've had the reference photo of this saved for over a year. I loved the highlights and the challenge with his hair and the "negative space" work required. I'm still too impatient to do it correctly, but this is the best I can do for now.

SIZE: 5-3/4 x 7-3/4 INCHES
TIME: about 8 hours
