Something fell. How could a sound so loud
have been a dream? Yet how could a sound
so loud have left a silence thick as this?
There is so little sound you might be deaf.
You say, "hello," softly, to the dark.
You hear your voice clearly through the air.
The lighted clock says four A.M.
Did something fall? It could have been a dream.
It may have been the picture in the hall.
Why did you hang it with a single nail?
Or was it something not so near as that,
whose size and mass you cannot say?
Was it here in the city, a block away,
a mile? There would be sirens, surely.
Or was it something both near and far -
did a world slip dow

ValentineI know the ancient words and I speak the newest talk -Valentine3 months ago in Traditional Fixed Forms More Like This
my pantry's full of pie and my front door has a lock.
You can be my fiddle and I can be your bow -
I can play the high notes so soft and sweet and slow.
I know you need a quiet place where you can mend your dreams -
my daddy was a tailor, I can sew those ragged seams.
I've heard that there are angels who are jealous when we kiss -
they look at us and think about all the things they miss.
There is something to be said for not rocking any boat -
but if you rock with me I know we can stay afloat.
I asked the higher powers if our love would be okay -
they said love is always risky but do it anyway.
I used to know just what to do, I had a master plan -
the only thing I know now is I want to be your man.
This is no brief love affair and this is no mistake -
this love is mine to give and my heart is yours to take.

I thought those would be enough.
I had love and I had science,
I thought those would be enough.
Then the bottom fell out
and push came to shove.
They say love is never-ending,
and they are telling it true.
They say love is never-ending,
and they are telling it true.
But love can get so tired
it does not know what to do.
Science always has an answer,
or it says one can be found.
Science always has an answer,
or it says one can be found.
But your world may go to pieces
before they track it down.
I got no plan, I got no program,
and no comforter is near.
I got no plan, I got no program,
and no c

Your Man BluesI don't want to be a fat man, so I can't find my feet.Your Man Blues11 months ago in Songs & Lyrics More Like This
I don't want to be a thin man, seeking something to eat.
I just want to be your man - not too fat and not too thin.
I want to ring your bell, babe, and know that you will let me in.
I don't want to be a strange man, so people try not to stare.
I don't want to be a plain man, so people can't see I'm there.
I just want to be your man - not too strange and not too plain.
I want you to feel love, babe, as natural as rain.
I don't want to be a wild man, like a mule kicking in a stall.
I don't want to be a tame man, with no surprises at all.
I just want to be your man - not too wild

Waiting for My Rider BluesWell, I'm waiting for my rider,Waiting for My Rider Blues5 months ago in Songs & Lyrics More Like This
I hope she gets back soon.
We really should be leaving
if we are going to reach the moon.
My rider is a sweet one
and she likes to navigate.
But we got to get a move on
or we are going to be late.
She went into the city
to buy us bread and wine.
If she got lost inside the market,
getting out could take some time.
There may have been bad weather,
and she was caught by a storm.
Just as soon as she gets back here,
we will both be safe and warm.
She may have met a crowd of people
who were watching a parade.
She may be waiting till it passes,
and they move a barricade.
She may have heard s

Water MusicWater Music2 years ago in Traditional Fixed Forms More Like This
It begins without a word - water music.
There will be singing, there will be a song.
But it begins with breath held in - water music.
It begins with stillness and with form.
A partial face, a single hand - water music.
One wish - to hide; another - to be known.
The red of lips, the green of leaf - water music.
To hide this way is not to be alone.
The image of a moment - water music.
Then it passes and a breath is drawn.
An artist makes an image - water music.
And a poet sees and makes a song.

Specialist BluesI'm a specialist, baby -Specialist Blues7 months ago in Songs & Lyrics More Like This
I'm the one you should see.
I said I'm a specialist -
I'm the one you should see.
When every doctor lets you down
it is time to try me.
They can x-ray you, baby,
to see if you broke a bone.
Oh, they x-ray you, baby,
to see if you broke a bone.
But I'm the one who can help you
when you feel all alone.
They can write you prescriptions
that no one can read.
They may write those prescriptions
that no one can read.
But I am legible, baby,
and I have what you need.
They will give you an appointment
that is six months away.
Well, they give you an appointment
and it is six months away.
But I can see you right now,

In a warm embrace
against winter taking hold--
found love within sleep.

Textures of book-spines,
foreground upon background of shelves;
conversations kept.
3.
Moon in haze outside;
home and office supplies aisle
will bring us closer.
4.
Windy afternoon;
living by a busy highway,
air resistance speaks.
5.
Nighttime, in silence,
becomes familiarly cold
as time crawls slowly.
6.
Grow up by myself,
remember summers wasted
collecting Relics.
7.
November crying--
I was a lost child in snow
until I crawled home.
8.
Aeroplane at dawn:
white line across scattered clouds,
a softly cold calm.
9.
On a rainy day

I am so brittleI am so brittle1 year ago in Free Verse More Like This
I am so brittle I could crack
and fall in pieces at your feet.
Sweep me off into the corner -
all I want to do is sleep.
I am so hollow I could melt
into a smaller puddle than
you might expect to see.
No need to step on me -
I only want to sleep.
Is there a code I have to crack,
is there a solid I should melt?
Give me the key and raise the heat -
let me sleep!

WhisperWhisper1 year ago in Traditional Fixed Forms More Like This
I went to the zoo and let some wild things out.
That was a whisper - do not make me shout.
I kept on driving when the road ran out.
That was a whisper - do not make me shout.
I erased my book and tore the pages out.
That was a whisper - do not make me shout.
I love my life but with a trace of doubt.
Can you hear me whisper? Do not make me shout.

Then and nowThen and now3 months ago in Traditional Fixed Forms More Like This
Elevators may stop between floors -
Shout aloud for help until the doors
Can be pulled open by the friend who hears.
A voice and friends is what we need and all we have.
Peace may come, may end certain wars.
Elevators will still stop between floors.

LullabiesLullabies1 year ago in Traditional Fixed Forms More Like This
I taught my tongue so many things -
I taught it lullabies.
I sang them softly to my sons,
until they closed their eyes.
I sang them for the wakeful world
and it raved on and on.
It would not rest, it did not heed
the song upon my tongue.
I sang them to my troubles then,
my own, so very near,
and when they fell asleep I saw
how sweet their faces were.
My sons awoke, the world raved on,
my troubles stirred and coughed.
"Sleep on a while," I softly said,
and sang again so soft.

A mirrorA mirror4 months ago in Free Verse More Like This
I have a mirror that shows another face.
I have a face that asks to hear a song.
I have a song with room for light.
I have light that is the red inside every color.
I have a color that is waiting for its name.
I have a name that means tenderness.
I have tenderness caught in a mirror.
