Elevators may stop between floors -
Shout aloud for help until the doors
Can be pulled open by the friend who hears.
A voice and friends is what we need and all we have.
Peace may come, may end certain wars.
Elevators will still stop between floors.

I taught my tongue so many things -
I taught it lullabies.
I sang them softly to my sons,
until they closed their eyes.
I sang them for the wakeful world
and it raved on and on.
It would not rest, it did not heed
the song upon my tongue.
I sang them to my troubles then,
my own, so very near,
and when they fell asleep I saw
how sweet their faces were.
My sons awoke, the world raved on,
my troubles stirred and coughed.
"Sleep on a while," I softly said,
and sang again so soft.

Something is going to happen, though the theater
is not like the picture. The velvet seats are tired,
and torn in a place or two. The nose says mildew
and everything says age. Yet there is a stage.
There is a curtain and something will happen
when it rises. We know more or less what we will see:
a few men and women, some of whose daily roles
are insurance agent, lawyer, speech therapist,
will act in a play the insurance agent directed.
Sometimes the play is tired. It will not be new.
Yet all will do their best, and together they
will make something happen. Some have done so
for thirty-nine years. We do not expect
to be transported. We will be right here.
Yet something will happen. The curtain rises.

The quality of this world is not determined
By the depths we draw down to
But the heights we rise up to regardless
The idea of possession and control
Is a fruitless endeavor
In a world so transient as one breath to the other
It is not in sameness
But in tolerance and exploration
That we grow
A single soul can't change the world
But collective actions that inspire others
There is power in this
Feel your feet on this road called life
Live in the world as you wish it would be
For the world falls short as it is
And while reality is an illusion
Shall we color our illusions in beautiful hues
So as to make our passage of easier sailing

I met a lady outside the town,
pale her face and dark her gown.
A great black bird passed overhead.
"What gift have you for me?" she said.
I gave her honey, I gave her mud,
a song of springtime in my blood.
Though she was fair and bade me stay,
I knew her name and went my way.
