An Introduction To Fine MetalworkingCommunity WeekAn Introduction To Fine Metalworking11 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Co-written by melzika!
Fine metalworking is most often considered a medium for jewelry making, although it can be used for other works as well. Many artists have made wall pieces, sculptures, reliquaries, vessels, and other less traditional works with metals. Fine metal is a very versatile and exciting medium that challenges the artist to create beautiful works of art from something that, at first glance, might seem very hard, rigid and unforgiving. Fortunately crafters have been working with metals throughout history, and contemporary artists can still rely on the techniques of those pioneers to see metals in a new light - as soft, malleable and functional.
This article will introduce you to some of these basic metalworking techniques. This is in no way meant as a tutorial, and reading this article won’t qualify you to begin working immediately in metals. There are a lot of safety precautions involved in working wit
PE: Wire-WrappingThis article is a short introduction to wire-wrapping, including information about wire-wrapping terms and tools, methods, tutorials and a feature of beautiful jewellery.PE: Wire-Wrapping11 months ago in Art Features More Like This
What is wire-wrapping?
"wire-wrapping" is - like the name implies - a technique where wire is wrapped in whatever way. It can be used to hold gemstones in place, and create intricate jewellery. It has the big plus that soldering isn't neccessary, and therefore all the equipment needed is relatively easy to come by.
Terms and Tools
Wire comes in different different sizes and forms, and you can choose between materials as well - you can use brass, copper, silver and gold wire.
Wire diameter is measured in 'gauge' and ranges from 14 gauge (~1/16 inch) to 26+ gauge (1/64 inch), so the higher the gauge number, the thinner the wire.

One final submission to the September/October challenge! -->
Still no new submissions! Although there are no more Fridays before November and our next Creative Craft Challenge, you still have until the end of October to participate in this challenge, get your artwork featured here in this journal, and have a chance to be the Member of the Month for October. Here are a few paracord bracelets submitted to dA in the past month, as a little extra inspiration!
See you next week!
... Did I miss Friday again? Sorry about that everyone, I just got a new job (seasonal clerk, nothing exciting) so it's been a whirlwind couple of days.
Anywho, there were no new submissions this week. :C But! You still have nearly two weeks left to participate in the challenge for September/October
The Bombshell that is Skyward Sword HylianAs I write this, the constant state of shock I've been in all day still hasn't subsided even a tiny bit.The Bombshell that is Skyward Sword Hylian3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Let me tell you all a little story.
When I first heard about The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, to be quite honest my expectations hadn't been too high. I still clung onto my favourite titles, Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. This idea that a game predated those didn't sit well.
During time in Germany last year, I was able to attend the GamesCom in Cologne and test play Skyward Sword for a total of ten minutes. It consisted of running around a closed off section of Faron woods with the Beetle as a test item. I was ecstatic. Link could sprint in a console game again! Those ten minutes felt like seconds, and I was finally looking forward to the game with a new found love.
Time since then was slow. Very slow. Soon, the release date came upon us. My problem was that I didn't have a Wii. The release date came and went. December, the day after Black Friday, my mother informs me that sh
Putting the 'Art' in Artisan :: CalabarteWhen it comes to the woodworking galleries, there is one artist I love to have a regular peek at: Calabarte's. These stunning creations are made from calabash, otherwise known as gourds. When the fruit dries out, it produces a wood-like substance without a grain, making it a perfect choice for many artistic endeavours. Calabarte uses this medium to create spectacular and intricate carvings that beg to be stared at.Putting the 'Art' in Artisan :: Calabarte8 months ago in Art Features More Like This
If the carvings aren't eye-catching enough in their own right, just have a loot at how they transform when lit. The gorgeous surfaces come alive with colour, highlighting every tiny detail. And if that's still not enough, look at the mesmerising way they transform the room around them. Here is just a small selection of the multi-dimensional beauties to be found in his gallery.
Polymer Clay Brands Polymer clay BrandsPolymer Clay Brands11 months ago in Art Features More Like This
many people who start working with polymer clay usually do so by taking the brand they have available in a store around the corner.
For me that was Fimo, which is still a regular in my polymer clay box. I have tried several brands, though not all, thats why I borrow (with permission!) from other nice people which are credited in the bottom and in the intro, to give you a full picture. All the product pictures are copyright of the respective brands which I have written permission to use. (And got free samples from Fimo & Pardo just for asking! Thanks so much once more)
Did anyone of you know that Fimos goes back a long time and is probably the first polymer clay? It was originally invented by the famous doll maker Käthe Kruse. When in 1939 the mass didn't turn out to be used the way for doll heads as she wanted, her daughter Sophie dabbled on with it. It took another 15 years until she did perfectione

Hello everybody! I've got one last submission to this month's challenge to share with you:
Beautiful! Well, I'll see you all next week with a new challenge for September/October!
Another beautiful submission to this challenge, check it out:
Next week will be the last for this challenge, and then we'll have a new challenge for September/October! See you next week!
Hi! We have a few new submissions to the challenge this week, another fun and unusual use of tsumami kanzashi: eyepatches! You all are so creative, I love it!
Also, I noticed a few tsumami kanzashi that were submitted to the gallery folders but not the favorites folder for the Challenge, so here's just a friendly reminder that it doesn't count for the Challenge unless it's in the favorites gallery (but it can be in both, so fear not- you don't have to choose between them!).
Anyways, see you all next week!

Support League of Legends Lego Figures! This announcement has been brought to me by DayanDeVarlo. The following is what he said.Support League of Legends Lego Figures!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
:iconDayanDeVarlo::iconsaysplz:"Me and a friend of mine are both League fans and long-time players. We made a project on Lego Cuusoo featuring LoL figures: http://lego.cuusoo.com/ideas/view/12350 Everything's explained in detail on the project's page.
If we can get 10.000 people to support it, Lego will create the sets and the figures.
I'd like to ask you to feature it in a journal if possibe since I don't have many watchers here and maybe this way it'd get to a lot more people who like the idea.
Supporting needs an account on the site but it's entirely free and simple to make. Feel free to note me if you have any questions.
Thanks for having a look & have a nice day!"
If you have any questions about this you can ask Dayan himself. :]

What specific references were you looking at while designing Jasmine's costume?
Racinet's plates were a primary source of inspiration: http://www.costumes.org/HISTORY/100pages/books/racinet/orient.htm , along with paging through sites about Persian miniature painting and middle eastern clothing terminology. Searching for this sort of information becomes a lot easier when you have some vague idea of what you're looking for.
¿Cómo lograr mayor exposiciónCrees ser un buen artista y tener buenas obras, pero nadie las ve. O a lo mejor eres un artista aprendiz que desea atraer mayor atención a tus obras para recibir consejos y críticas. Suena a ti?¿Cómo lograr mayor exposición6 years ago in Art Features More Like This

Drawing Fanart helped me get an Internship +NEATI did a redline of a terrible "professional" Sonic drawing ( seen here: http://cosmicremix.tumblr.com/post/23177054109/amomentofarchiesonic-answering-a-few-messages ) which was then viewed by the owner and producer of a commercial studio here in San Diego. After also reviewing my portfolio, they decided to bring me in. I start work tomorrow.Drawing Fanart helped me get an Internship +NEAT3 years ago in Personal More Like This
This is actually the second time that drawing Sonic fanart has lead to getting me studio work. The first time a rendition of Knuckles I did instigated some freelance work at a studio in L.A. Of course, having original artwork and designs helps to solidify any job opportunities.

Watercolor Paper Sizing - Why it Matters"Why does the size of watercolor paper matter?" No, not 'size' but 'sizing'. It's the surface treatment of the paper that determines how it absorbs moisture and takes paint, and good sizing is essential for good watercolor paper.Watercolor Paper Sizing - Why it Matters1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Recently, I ran into a sudden, awful change in the brand of watercolor paper I use, to the point where it is unusuable. An email to the manufacturer went unanswered, so I'm hoping this blog entry I wrote will help spread the word to manufacturers that changing the sizing of paper without warning the consumers is harmful to the artist:
Please feel free to spread this around if you feel it's an important issue. I know I'm not the only one who has experienced this, and I'd love to hear other peoples' rants!

WingsGotta share with you guys... A new feathered wing movement .gif!Wings1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I'm never satisfied with the feather wings I make, I am CONSTANTLY tweaking and trying to improve them, honestly it's become a bit of an obsession over the past year. I spend TOO much time doing it. But the fantastic suchacat has commissioned a winged doll and gave me the go-ahead to spend a bit of extra time working on another new mechanism. I've been experimenting over the past month and finally got to the stage of actually producing a pair of wings over the past couple of days and I am SO pleased with how they're turning out!
They are manually operated, my finger is hidden at the base. They are design to be moved by the first primary or by the last secondary to minimise feather distortion. They move easily and smoothly, the feathers put themselves in place and sit nicely... They can be folded and unfolded as well as moved up and down, forwards and backwards.
The extra excellent part is that they have the pot
Advice on becoming a better artistI get asked by a lot of younger artists (and moms and grandmothers) for advice on getting better and becoming a professional comic artist. Hopefully this will help. Ask me more questions if I'm not clear enough and I'll try to post more about what I think makes a good artist and how to become a professional in the comic industry.Advice on becoming a better artist1 year ago in Personal More Like This
If you're not already aware, I'm a self-taught artist with little to no schooling on the subject. I thought I knew how to draw when I was a kid and I thought that drawing from shapes and building your characters out of forms was stupid. I don't know what the proper term for this is so I'm going to refer to it as construction drawing or under drawing throughout this post. My parents had purchased me some how to draw books, I also went to art class, and both of these tried to get me to use construction drawing techniques. Unfortunately I didn't understand the value of it and thus rejected it. I didn't need to build a tiger out of blocks, circles,
