Korra Season Finale, AKA Avatar Ex MachinaOK, I think I've calmed down enough to write a review now. Spoilers ahead!Korra Season Finale, AKA Avatar Ex Machina2 years ago in Personal More Like This
First, let's start off with what worked in the season finale. The animation was just...incredible, the action was exciting and sweeping in its scale, and Zuko's voice was reincarnated as General Iroh the goddamn determinator! which was actually kinda distracting, cause I kept expecting him to be like "I AM SO GOOD AT BEING GOOD!!. Hiroshi Sato showed his true colors as a hate-filled douchenozzle, and Asami showcased her usual class and determination when faced with truly shitty circumstances (on a side note, I've always had a hard time believing that Mr. Sato invented all those airplanes and mechas and stuff, because honestly, when we met him he kinda gave off a Henry Ford vibe, not an "engineering genius" vibe like that crazy eyebrow dude from A:TLA. But whatever, that's a minor point). And of course Naga was a badass...and according to tumblr, there are now people who ship Bolin x Naga. Just...why.
No More Unauthorized ArtworkRegarding the debate of whether comic artists should continue selling unauthorized prints/sketches of characters they don't own, I think Bissette and his legal advisor are 100% correct. So from now on, I won't be doing any sketches or commissions at shows of any character that I don't own. Am I rolling over in fear of Marvel? Maybe, but as it states below, they're in their legal right to come after me if there's ever a dispute. I love to complain about the Big Two, but I can't (in good conscience) get upset at them if I'm breaking the rules myself. Being DC exclusive, maybe I can get a waiver that allows me to sketch DC characters, so I'll keep you updated. No More Unauthorized Artwork3 years ago in Personal More Like This

Botany for PaleoartistsAfter being repeatedly told that this is a good thing to do, I started a series of articles about botany to show paleoartists some of the interesting diversity of Mesozoic plant groups. Not all ferns are green and boring, for example. Neither were they back in the Mesozoic.Botany for Paleoartists2 months ago in Personal More Like This
So, the first part is a photographic tour of modern fern diversity spiced with information about their fossil record and ecology. I want to see paleoart with red ferns, grass-like ferns, huge ferns that look like horse chestnuts and aquatic ferns that look like four-leaved clovers. There's more to come.
Here's the article: http://hummingdinosaur.wordpress.com/2014/09/08/not-all-ferns-look-like-ferns-botany-for-paleoartists-part-i/

TF2 Contest-- THIS TRAIN IS OVERI have decided the winner(s) and have sent everyone their respective points--and I officially have one last point remaining for the sake of having the contestant prize a specific number. (Everyone knows what I'm talking about)TF2 Contest-- THIS TRAIN IS OVER1 year ago in Personal More Like This
The next contest will have items from the game as rewards--seeing as how I'm now broke in terms of dA currency.
These items can be anything from hats to weapons to tons and tons of refined metal.
I hope everyone had a nice time and has a nice rainbow-filled day.
Since I'm sick and tired at looking at over 2000 points that I don't plan to ever use (because after they closed down the shop... who really cares anymore. I don't want a premium so...?), I decided that I'm just gonna hold a TF2 contest and give someone literally almost a year's premium.
This is going to be a very casual one--not that many restrictions because it would be like taking away all new weapons and making us use stock for the rest of our lives.
Stock is fun--but only to an extent.

5 Comic Book Truths (that I don't think are true)There are lots of tips, chestnuts, and other pieces of advice that I've heard over the years--tidbits of wisdom passed on from one generation to the next, from professional to professor to prospective student. Some of them are drawing tips, some of them are tricks to dealing with publishers, and some are general guidelines on how to survive in comics. Most of them are useful and true and will stand the test of time, but a few of them have become hackneyed platitudes and have gone unquestioned for too long. Here are 5 that I'm questioning...5 Comic Book Truths (that I don't think are true)10 months ago in Personal More Like This
1. READERS WILL ONLY LOOK AT A PANEL FOR 5 SECONDS, SO DON'T SWEAT IT TOO MUCH.
I understand the intention of this bit of wisdom, and I mostly agree with it: drawing great interiors is important, but at the same time, you don't want to get bogged down with small details that most readers won't even notice.
But here's my concern with this: if you treat every panel like it's disposable, then you're less likely to make an impact with reader

Morrowind FeatureMorrowind Feature3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
The Elder Scrolls III Morrowind is my favourite game of all time, and it will always hold a special place in my heart. I've been planning for awhile to put together a game-inspired feature; unfortunately, it is very hard to find genuine fan art since most Morrowind-related deviations on dA are game screenshots (or manipulations thereof), and I found only a limited number of devs I could use.
For those unfamiliar with the game, Morrowind is an open-ended first-person RPG with an expansive and detailed world, released in 2002. The central plot concerns the deity Dagoth Ur, housed within the volcanic Red Mountain, who seeks to gain power and break Morrowind free from Imperial reign. In addition to the extensive main quest, there are detailed discursive quests for a variety of factions, including various guilds, religious organizations, and aristocratic houses.
Lord Voryn Dagoth had been a good friend of Lord Indoril Nerevar, but they tu
Top 5 Mistakes (I've made over the years)To many people in comics, I only arrived a few years ago with Joe the Barbarian. Then came Hellblazer (completed in 2008 before I began working on Joe), American Vampire: SOTF, and finally Punk Rock Jesus. Once in a while someone will mention Off Road (an OGN I did with Oni back in 2004), but for the most part it seems like I've been published only these last few years when in fact I've been published professionally for a decade now.Top 5 Mistakes (I've made over the years)2 years ago in Personal More Like This
This isn't a plea to have everyone go back through my previous work--in fact, I'm glad that a lot of the books I've done over the years aren't on readers' radars. I'm proud of it all, but the books above are a nice, tight group of titles to be associated with. They're all in a similar brand, they're all recent, they all have good creators/publishers associated with them, and the artwork is mostly consistent. Go back further than that, and you'll see artwork that looks nothing like the stuff I'm doing these days. (Although Off Road still holds up to some de

The Comfort of Mindless Obedience
When is information true and useful and when is it just “propaganda?” Why in fact is an image or phrase or animated art sequence “propaganda” rather than it simply being a “lie?” What about acceptable lies that define our society as much as they degrade it - - for example commercials that obviously hype a product with untruths or political advertisements full of unachievable platitudes.

Lots of artists on dA do Points Commissions, also known as PCs, which involve creating art or design for other people on request in return for Points. Here are just a few of them...
If you're looking for a specific type of commission, simply use Ctrl+F, type in what you want (literature, drawing, polymer clay, digital, animation, colouring, icons, logos, design, tutorials, stamps, emotes, vector, 3D, pixel dolls, photography, photomanipulation, space art, terragen, digital art, journal skins, journal scripts, wallpapers, comics, fractals, journal css, gallery css, cosmetic application, craft) and your browser will do the hard work for you!

The common misconceptionWhen giving workshops last weekend, I was confronted with something at least remarkable. The common misconception5 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
I had a random chat with a girl that apparently knew me from DeviantArt. We a friendly conversation about art such. It wasn't that strange, until she concluded her message with.
"It's nice talking to you. I always wanted to know what you were like. You know... since you draw so well"
And I was like... "Huh? What?"
Some people see me as a talented writer or artist, others (including myself) raise the bar even higher.
But regardless of what you see as skilled or not, I don't think there's such a thing as 'them' and 'us' in the art world. It's too small of a world. We're too alike. And I think most of us aren't exactly prone to living a celebrity lifestyle anyway. Bitches & bling don't match well with the usually quiet lifestyle an artist prefers.
When I started doing painting, I looked up to many of the lo
Titillation vs. SexismBoobs.Titillation vs. Sexism2 weeks ago in Personal More Like This
Guys are fascinated by them.
Through single-digit ages, they find the very concept of them hilarious, and when puberty kicks in the mere thought of lady-lumps generally causes some movement in the trouser department. These weak-willed creatures will follow them anywhere and they will do almost anything if it means simply being permitted to gaze upon them for a few moments more.
The entertainment industries, from the big movie makers to the lowly art whores (like me) know this, and have played upon it for years in order to separate males from their money. As a result, mass media is awash with the female form in all manner of provocative poses and dress.
Many women are fed up with this, but is the whole thing “sexist”?
Well, it’s impossible and indeed wrong to say a whole industry is one thing or another. Ultimately it’s all one, big, dumb organism that simply moves with the cultural winds. It perpetuates what sustains it. It’s only when you break it
"Legend of Korra" Series Review:...............................woah."Legend of Korra" Series Review:2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Well; that was rather good, wasn't it?
Splendid art, voice acting and a compelling narrative on par with any live-action, prime-time series.
The resolution at the end, though, felt a little rushed. While I'm glad there was one, it had an air of finality about it, as though it's uncertain a second season will ever transpire.
If there isn't one; it'll be a crime, given all the work that went into crafting Korra's world.

I have been waiting for this fanfiction to come out- well patiently, but still so excited that it's finally here
For those of you that don't know, Unleashing Hope is the sequel to a fanfiction called Letting Go of Hope. It was started by Comix28 on fanfiction.net and then was finished by :iconloor101: , who took this story to whole other level...Audio Narration on Youtube. This took me back to when I was little, listening to audio tapes of books on long car rides when I used to visit my family members two states away. It was a different experience than just reading and watching an animation (which I love both, don't get me wrong ) But this, was something that expanded my imagination on a level that for me being so young at the time, most likely helped my creativity get to where it is today.
