Their laughter hurt.

I dreamed of a silly little girl who bounded down hallways, a whale spout of blonde hair on the top of her hair bobbing back and forth. Her spirit was as exuberant as her giggle; innocence radiated off of her and no one judged her for it. She trusted her mother and her father and her big brother, not only with her life, but for the comfort of real companionship. She wasn't afraid to talk to the other kids, nor did she wonder if she were pretty enough to share their gummy bears or swing on the swings next to them. Her grin was genuine and when she let another girl play with her Barbie doll, there were no ulterior motives. In the mornings it only took her a few minutes to get readysquirming into the dress her mom picked out for her and getting the oatmeal wiped from her animated face. In the evenings, before bed, she would stay up later than her mother knew, too in love with life to quite call it quits an

John had them all gathered in the living room, ten rowdy boys of varying ages. The oldest, Michael, lined them up like cadets with their hands up in salutes and the tiniest boy sticking his belly way out.
"Ten hut!" He shouted. The boys, as if hit by lightning, shot stiff. "Alright you good fer nuttin lollygaggers." He started up, prowling in front of the line with a frightening scowl, just as he had seen in the movies. "We've got to straighten ourselves out. Battleplan!"
"Battleplan." Came the soft echo of many voices. The kids pretended to shake, acting fearful of their 'commanding officer' with suppressed giggles. One was almost red with the effort of clamping his mouth shut.
John watched quietly from the kitchen, scratching in answers to his Sudoku, wondering where this was going. Sometimes the kids go

To mull too long on the inevitable song
In a raindrop's pallid flight.
By opening up to the minute flicker
Of water coursing from a tear
As concrete growing wearily darker
Damper, distance disappear.

Reflections from a watery star.

Never fought for food.
Never in a state of ecstasy,

But I have loved-
as one who has been alone,
Clung to the edge of a falling hope,
Built new dreams in a hurricane.
I blame the rain - I cannot sleep.
I spent too long on the tiny things
That did not care, I cannot sleep.
