For one of our [college] modules ~VonBrrr and I both had very similar ideas about what we wanted to do for our projects, so we decided to do a collaboration. The idea was for an illustrated storybook set in a historical fantasy/steampunk world in which the 100 Years War has dragged on for 300 years and military technology has advanced in great leaps.

This is one of the first illustrations I did for it. A young lady taken hostage by them dastardly French. :shakefist:

I wish I was better at coming up with names... :crying:

~VonBrrr and I decided that our skyships needed some form of close defence against attack, and found the ideal weapon in the Puckle Gun.

The Puckle Gun - properly called 'A Defence' - was a 1718 invention by James Puckle that was basically a large revolver on a stand. It fired three times faster than a rifleman of the time could fire, which made it the fastest firing gun of its day. For some bizarre reason it was never adopted by any military.

This is the crew of a gun nest on board the English skyship 'Swiftsure' blasting away at some enemy.

I revamped the sky, it was fun to paint! :iconhyperlarryplz:

After experimenting with cartooning, I wanted to try using my newfound line & wash cartoon style to create a more serious illustration.

This was inspired by reading about areas where so much depleted uranium ammunition has been used that military personnel only venture there in HAZMAT suits. The native children of course don't know about the danger, and play in such dangerous areas in blissful ignorance of the damage being done to them.

Although this was very rushed I think it might be my favourite of the cartoons I did.

ZOMBIE LLAMA! :iconhypnolaplz:

This would probably have been more pertinent had I actually submitted it straight after I'd finished it, which was several months ago, but oh well, it still has some relevance....

Painted whilst doing my duties as exhibition custodian before the start of the summer break, I finished it in a day. :meow:

This was done for a college project late last year, which revolved around experimentation. Some of you may remember the owls and fear of flying article illustrations I submitted back then. This cartoon was from the same project.

For the self-initiated part of the project I decided to create some political cartoons, and thought it ideal to illustrate what at the time was a current affair; the student protests in London (and elsewhere). Last year the government passed a proposal to raise the higher education tuition fee cap from Ł3,225 to Ł9,000, to come into effect starting in academic year 2012/2013. This obviously upset a lot of students and potential students, resulting in the worst genuine riots in London for decades.

All these people are drawn from photographs of the protesters, so they're essentially portraits. :aww:

Those of you living in the USA may recall an incident a while ago where the US Secret Service, providing security for the president on a diplomatic mission to Colombia, were involved in some serious misconduct of a carnal business nature. This was my reaction to the story.

I goofed on the guy's trousers though; the navy looks more 'bank manager' than 'bodyguard'. Ah well, that's what I get for ignoring how wonderful grey is.... :B

The final illustration for Swifture, Lady Hartenford on the deck of HMS Swiftsure, confident in her new environment after having spend so long aloft.

I was shooting for a classic 'happy end' picture; evocative, optimistic, and a little bit sad in a happy way. The entire thing was underpainted with a warm brown, which was left to show through in areas, to emulate the look of old paintings by the likes of Sir Joshua Reynolds and Thomas Gainsborough.

It was painted during an all nighter during which I consumed three litres of energy drink, which I later found out contained considerably more than the maximum safe daily dose of caffeine. This is why such things as a the warped railing, I was buzzing so hard that night! :high:
I'm going to repaint this one day, bigger and better, with airships in the background, and other people on deck! :iconhypnolaplz:
