When his body hit the earth again, he found himself lying beneath a beech tree, gazing out at the narrow road where two twisted hunks of metal smoldered. There was grass beneath him, prickling against his cheek. He'd never felt it before.
He heard the screaming from the roadside, but it sounded far away, as though he were wrapped in a blanket. His head was still spinning, but as his eyes focused, he saw his mother's face behind the crushed window of the automobile on the road. Her features were peaceful and expressionless. A man rushed to the crumpled machine, and two others followed close behind. His mother did not stir.
It was then that the boy took a breath, gasping, filling his lungs all at once. Immediately his chest and lungs burned. He coughed
