Hellsing - Scent Chapter 4Chapter 4: You
You sat there, listening to the strange woman tell her story, how she was transformed by the same man who had just tried to kill you a few minutes ago. How she had been accepted into the organization immediately because of this. How the organization was specially trained for the single purpose of hunting and exterminating vampires who posed a threat to people. As you sat there listening to her speak, you began to form the opinion that she was the type of person you could very easily become friends with. She reminded you of yourself in some respects, although she seemed to be a little more timid and soft-spoken than you usually were.
She finished her story with a small mention and description of the leader, Sir Integra Hellsing. She was the woman you had briefly met when being helped to the trucks by the soldiers. She seemed to be stern, strong, powerful. She seemed like the type of person who would be the leader of what was basically an assassin's organization. Even as S
Hellsing - Don't CrySeras awoke with a start, breathing in quick, startled gasps, as she looked wildly around at her dungeon room.Hellsing - Don't Cry4 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
When she remembered where she was, she relaxed, falling back against her pillow, and began to cry, red streaming uncontrollably down her face.
The orphanage, the evil people who didn't care, understand, except for their wages. She remembered it all. Her parents, gone. She knew that they would have understood her, unlike her master, who didn't even try, and treated her with annoyance and exasperation. Yet, she was tied with the curse of having fallen in love with him.
Her father, who she had been so proud of, gone. Gone, because of some thugs with a grudge. Gone. She was alone, with no one to go to.
Seras sobbed even harder, as his face swam before her eyes, burned forever into her mind by the horrible dream.
"Seras..." a voice murmured, and she gasped, startled. It was him, her master. She would have sighed, if she had been able.
"Y-yes Master?" she whispered roughly through h
Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 1Seras stood awkwardly in a dark corner of the dance floor.Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 13 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
She felt self-conscious, like everyone was staring at her in her silver high-heels and black satin dress. A bleach-white rose was pinned to the front, and her hair, instead of being pulled back into her normal spiky ponytail was let down, with some added shine thanks to a hair-care product she had bought earlier that week.
She shuffled around from foot to foot nervously, casting awkward glances around the room.
"I don't know why I let you talk me into this, Pip." she said to the mercenary who had just returned with drinks. She accepted hers but didn't dare take a sip, still not entirely trusting the Frenchman. 'Better safe than raped.' She thought to herself.
Pip took a sip of his brandy, and looked around too.
"I don't see what ze big deal is, I thought you'd like a night on ze town." Seras sighed.
"I know, and it's probably good for me, but I'm just not in the mood." now it was Pip's turn to heave a sigh.
"Alright, I understa
Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 8"Where were you last night, Alucard? Walter informed me that you were not in your room." Integra asked her vampire the next night when he appeared. He thought it over before answering.Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 83 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
"With Seras." Integra nodded, as if this was the answer she was expecting.
"Very well. I assume that you would have still come had I called you?"
"Of course, my master. Nothing is more urgent a priority than your call." An eyebrow raised skeptically on the blonde's face.
"So your mouth says, but your face betrays other intentions."
"Whatever my intentions or wishes may be, my actions will remain forever true." Integra waited for a moment, contemplating him; his words and expressions were slightly unsettling.
"Alucard, do you resent me? Are you resenting my mastery over you?" she asked him.
"Of course not, master. I have always had a very high level of respect for you." he responded almost immediately, like a reflex reaction. She sensed the falsity at once.
"I will not be lied to." she said harshly, then
Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 11Integra and Alucard had been interrupted in their conversation when they heard a sudden outburst of yelling and screaming from several floors down. Although neither of them could distinguish what was actually being said, it was immediately obvious that the person who was screeching was Seras. Integra shook her head, sighing.Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 113 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
"This was the problem when she first arrived, too." she said, waving forward Walter, who had been standing quietly in a corner. "Could you perhaps convince our dear sweet Ms. Victoria to quiet down?" she requested, and the butler bowed deeply.
"Of course, mam." The two others watched him leave, Seras' shrieks ringing through the halls for another few minutes before finally ceasing.
"What was that all about?" Integra asked when he returned.
"It's a bit hazy, but I believe Miss Victoria had some problems with the knowledge that Captain Bernadette bore witness to certain personal events." At this, Alucard stiffened visibly. Both humans noticed.
"Is there a problem Alu
Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 20Alucard awoke slowly from a dreamless sleep, becoming gradually aware of his surroundings. The first thing he noticed was the feeling of another's hand in his, loosely griping his fingers. His eyes opened slowly, and flicked in the direction the hand originated from. He saw Seras, eyes closed, face relaxed, the faint ghost of a smile on her lips. Her head rested next to his, but the rest of her was out of his line of sight, disappearing over the edge of the coffin-bed. Except her hand, which was entwined with his. He smiled. She must have woken up at some time, and fallen asleep again after getting up. He didn't want to break their careful bond, so he didn't make any move to get up, simply shifting his focus to directly above him, the underside of the lid of the coffin-bed, which had never been lowered.Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 203 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
He remembered sitting there next to her as she slept, holding her hand and just mulling things over in his head.
Things about his master and what she could have been dreaming about and
Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 2"I blew it. I forgot just how powerful her hearing is, and I blew it. She will never want anything to do with me now, unless I apologize, and fast." Pip was talking to his group of fellow mercenaries about earlier that night, and Seras stalking away. Some were looking at him with sympathy, and nodding in agreement; others were regarding him with pity at making such a foolish mistake.Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 23 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
"Um, captian?" He heard a small voice behind him, and his men stared at whoever it was. He turned to see Seras standing there, still in the outfit she was wearing at the dance. He stood, setting down his beer, not taking his eyes off her. She had a sheepish look on her face, and before he could open his mouth to apologize, she beat him to it.
"I'm sorry." She said, and he was taken by surprise.
"Eh...I...for what?" he finally asked, confused. He should be the one saying he was sorry.
"For reacting so dramatically earlier. It wasn't you, it was me. I overreacted." She admitted, and he blinked.
Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 9A soft knock sounded on Alucard's door.Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 93 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
"Enter." The door creaked metallically as it opened, and Seras was revealed. Alucard smiled upon seeing her. "Seras."
"Hi Alucard." she greeted him shyly.
"To what do I owe the truly great pleasure?"
"Well, I was just wondering if you wanted to take a walk with me. I just...I enjoyed our outing last night, and...um..." she trailed off. As she had spoke, his smile had grown progressively wider.
"It would be an honor." he stood, bowing and offering his arm. She took it, giggling a bit.
They walked in silence until Seras spoke up.
"Alucard, how old are you?" she asked, and he smirked.
"To be honest, after the first hundred and fifty years I lost track. But I would estimate...somewhere close to 560 years." Seras was quiet for a moment.
"Have you ever been in love before?" It was a long time before he answered.
"My inclination is to say yes, once. But it depends on your definition of being 'in love.' Have I ever been in love like this?" to make clear
Hellsing - Separation Anxiety"Master?" Seras asked sleepily.Hellsing - Separation Anxiety4 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
"Mm?" was Alucard's reply. It was dark, and they couldn't see each other, but that was to be expected when inside a coffin. They had both just awoken from a peaceful day's sleep. Alucard stretched slightly, as there was little room in the enclosed area, and gently wrapped his arms around her, sighing contentedly. There were fewer greater pleasures than waking up next to the girl you loved. Seras nuzzled deeper into his chest, perfectly content, but with just one little thing in the back of her mind.
"Master, when are we going to tell them? We can't keep this secret forever." She was referring to the fact that the other members of the Hellsing organization had yet to be aware that Seras and Alucard were romantically involved. Alucard sighed again.
"No, we can't. But we don't necessarily need to tell them. I don't know about you, but I'm perfectly comfortable with PDA (Public Displays of Affection). If they notice that, they will be able to find out for th
Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 23Seras didn't cry.Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 232 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
Well, that was not entirely true, she did cry. But she didn't cry all that much. Not nearly as much as she expected, as she felt she could. But no, only a few scarlet tears escaped her, and that was it. She had tried to do what she thought was the best thing to do, tried to take control and fix the situation, but all that had happened was that she created an even wider rift between not only them, but probably everyone. Mainly she just felt helpless. Helpless and hopeless. She may as well just die right then and there, considering that she didn't think that she would be of much use to the organization now. Emotionally scarred was not the best work mentality.
She was surprised when there was a knock at the door. She assumed it would be Pip or Walter, or maybe even Sir Integra. Anyone but him. So she was shocked when she opened the door and it was him.
"Hello Seras..." he said. She nodded curtly.
He winced at the use of his title instead of his name.
Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 21"Alucard." Integra didn't call her servant with her usual demanding tone, just a tired sounding order. It took a few minutes longer than usual before he appeared before her, glasses over his eyes and hat pulled low over his face. He didn't say anything, simply leaning against the wall, arms crossed in front of his chest, waiting for her to speak. If she hadn't been so tired and preoccupied, she probably would have noticed the deep scowl on his face, even with his eyes obscured. She just sighed, swallowing her comment about his unusually tardy arrival.Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 213 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
"Alright Alucard, it's nothing new for you. There's been an attack. Nothing to indicate it's anything special, just a typical case. It's just one vampire, maybe one or two ghouls if you're lucky." She said in what was almost a monotone. He didn't say anything, just nodded curtly. She looked up from her desk, which is what she had been staring at, head in her hands, and gazed at him with tired yet curious eyes. "What's troubling you, Aluca
Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 19Seras gasped, pulling back into reality, face glistening with blood-red sweat. She had no idea what had just happened, although it had definitely not been her own mind that had conjured such images. Putting her hand against the wall for support, she took deep breaths, trying to calm herself. She had no experience with such things, but she was 99% sure that she had just been in Integra's mind, watching her dream. She had no idea what it meant, but she could tell Integra had been severely shaken by it.Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 193 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
Walking forward slowly, the vampire stumbled and fell into the wall, leaning her back against it and slowly sliding down. Her heart would have been pounding out of her chest if it had still been beating.
"Oh god Sir Integra," she whispered, "what's going on with you?"
"Seras?" she looked up, seeing Alucard standing before her, a concerned expression on his face. She met his eyes for a second before breaking down into heavy sobs. She didn't know why she was so affected by this vision, it wa
Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 3The following night was a busy one. Pip's unit was sent to some small-town village overrun with ghouls. Of course after a night with nothing to do, Alucard went along as well, hoping for some action or at least a good show.Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 33 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
As the unit unloaded from the cars, Pip noticed him there, watching them, expressionless. A thought occurred to him, but he didn't have time to act on it. He shook his head and turned back to his men, shouting instructions. As soon as the others had begun their march, Pip about to follow them, Alucard approached silently.
"What is it you feel you should tell me, captain?" he asked, and Pip turned, only slightly surprised to see him there. What surprised him more was what he said, until he recalled that the vampire could read minds. He began to walk, sensing Alucard keeping pace right behind him.
"Oh, uhm...nothing Mr. Alucard. It can wait." He said, and he heard a low chuckle in response.
"It will have to, for now we must partake in battle." He pointed out, and Pip
Hopeless Pt. 24: The EndAlthough they weren't exactly sure what had happened, Integra and Walter were relieved when it seemed that things had been worked out between Alucard and Seras. The first indication of this was when, seemingly just out of the blue, the tension that they didn't realize was there slowly eased away. At first they weren't sure what it was, until Alucard appeared before them, looking calmer than he had in what seemed like weeks. He showed amazing humility as he apologized to them for everything he had done and everything that had happened.Hopeless Pt. 24: The End2 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
"I would like to apologize for my rash behavior. It was childish, not to mention uncalled for. I am truly sorry Master. And although she was not at fault, Seras would like me to reiterate to you that she is as well."
"Why didn't she come to say that herself?" Integra asked, not suspicious, just genuinely curious. She was also just a little worried that they may have decided to part ways and return to being master and fledgling, which she didn't think woul
Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 7Seras awoke to the pitch-black of the inside of her coffin. She lay there unmoving for a moment. Slowly, she reached over to grasp the remote, pressing the button to lift the lid. She dressed in silence, contemplating. She exited her room and walked up the stairs to the main floor of the mansion. She wasn't wandering, but she was also not entirely sure where she was going. It was as if an unseen force was guiding her.Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 73 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
She opened the front door and walked out into the night. The moon was in the sky, full. It was a cloudless night. She went through the front yard, barely glancing at the scenery. There was a path along the outside of the hedge, just beyond the boundaries of the Hellsing estate, which she followed. It was headed for the ocean.
When she arrived at a rocky cliff, where waves taller than she was attacked the steep shore, she stopped. The moon was over the water, casting a long, thin, silvery reflection on it. She gazed at it in silence. It was no surprise at all to her when h
Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 12Seras knocked on Alucard's door, tapping out a rhythm.Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 123 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
"Alucard! Are you ready yet? Usually it's the girl who keeps the guy waiting!" she called. The door opened. She gasped.
She had seen him in suits before, and a tuxedo wasn't really that far a stretch, but there was something that seemed really different about it. She couldn't place what it was. His hair was the same as it usually was. There was a blood red rose in the breast pocket of his outer jacket.
"You look lovely." he commented. She blushed, looking at her feet.
"You...you look great." she said breathlessly. He grinned.
"Shall we?" he offered his hand. She took it.
As she watched, all their surroundings began melting away, morphing and twisting until they became a street in the town. In front of them now was a dance club. They walked in, and Seras looked around, seeing all the other couples there. There were some bachelors too, all at one table, drinking and laughing a little too loud. A few of them had black eyes and bruises
Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 6"Are you in love with Seras Victoria?"Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 63 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
The question cut through all of the doubts and reasoning and denial Alucard had against the idea like melted butter. Yes, yes he could be...NO! There was no "could be" anymore! If it was so obvious people could see it, there was no doubt. He, the most powerful being in the universe, had fallen victim to the ultimate human trap: love. He didn't answer. He had no facial expression. He was a complete blank.
"Alucard?" Integra was worried. He didn't look at her, but he did answer.
"Yes," he said with absolutely no emotion at all in his voice, "yes I believe I am. Good night to you, Integra." And he vanished, appearing in his dungeon room.
He would not exit that room for quite some time, for he needed to think, to figure things out. He needed time on his own.
Seras stood in awkwardly in a corner of the dance floor.
This was familiar; she was wearing the same outfit as she had a few nights ago
Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 5"Oh my god." Seras said, shocked by her dream.Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 53 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
'Well, that does sum it up rather nicely.' Alucard admitted to himself. He didn't know why he had felt compelled to listen-in (or watch-in in this case) on his fledgling's dream, and he wasn't sure whether he was glad he had or not.
What struck him so much was not how he had been portrayed, or how Pip was the savior from him (although that did annoy him a bit in the back of his mind), but the second version of him, as the hero. As the tender, loving one. Never in his life or death could he remember ever being described or thought of as tender and/or loving. And although he was watching from Seras' mind, and therefore from Seras' eyes, a part of him liked seeing himself like that, not as a vicious killer, but as a protector. A lover...
'Wait, what are you thinking?! You are a vampire. You're a king, Dracula for God's sake! You were not meant to be like that. You were never meant to be like that...' but still, a part of him wondered if that
Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 10Seras awoke at 9:08 PM the next night. She got up, got dressed, like any other night. Also like any other night, she strode purposefully past the medical blood sitting on the table, doing the best she could to ignore it.Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 103 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
"Gets more difficult every night." she muttered, referring to the instinctual pull she felt towards it. Every night it was harder to resist.
She shook her head and walked to her dresser, opening the top drawer and pulling out a small, simple black book. It was about the size of a piece of paper folded in half. She made to sit on her bed, but couldn't help glancing at the table. Shaking her head again, she headed instead for the door.
Stepping out into the hall, her eyes wandered, searching for somewhere to go. Her eyes predictably fell on Alucard's door. She didn't know when he would be awake, just that he wasn't right now. There was something scattered and unfocused about their mind link which hinted at that.
Seras stood outside his door for a long while. At that poin

"Because we're in love, sweetheart."
"Knowing someone for exactly who they are, and accepting them for that and nothing more. Being in love is doing anything for them, protecting them, comforting them, dying for them."
"...isn't that what your job is?" her father laughed.
"Yes, that's my job. But being in love is a special feeling for that person, that no matter what you will never separate. It's...it's like nothing that you can describe. You'll understand someday, Seras."
The vampire smiled at the memory, stretched out on her coffin bed, looking at her now finished drawing. It was the one she had done a rough draft of on that napkin. The two hearts.
"Yes, dad. Yes I will someday."
"I finished it."
Alucard looked up, surprised. Seras was standing in the doorway, holding her sketchbook, a smirk on her face. He grinne
Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 15As they sat in silence, a particularly violent gust of wind whipped at them, and Seras shivered, wrapping her arms around herself.Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 153 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
"Ugh. Sometimes I don't like the wind." She said. She felt something around her shoulders, and when she looked she saw the red of Alucard's coat around her. She looked up to his face. He was faced toward the sea, but his eyes were trained on her, and his mouth was smiling. She smiled too, and moved closer to him, leaning into him again. "Thanks."
"Of course. It's just," he wrapped an arm around her shoulders, pulling her in and leaning down to whisper in her ear, "vampires don't get cold." Her eyes widened and she looked up at him. He winked. She grinned sheepishly.
"Can I help it if I like you?"
"No complaints here." He grinned too, pointed fangs gleaming in the moonlight. She studied his face for a few seconds. "What?"
"I'm still trying to wrap my head around this. You have to understand that I went through the longest time with just one version of you in
Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 14Seras sighed, leaning into Alucard and resting her head on his shoulder.Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 143 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
They had decided to leave the dance place early so they would have some time to just sit and be together. The cliff they had met on that first night had become a favorite spot of theirs, with the moon shining down on them over the water.
A salty gust of wind pushed and pulled at Seras's hair, and she decided to lift her head, pulling the band out from it and letting it blow free. Then she lowered her head again to her master's shoulder, sighing comfortably.
"I've been drawing again." She said, and Alucard smiled.
"Well, doodling actually. It's just a rough design." She reached into her pocket, fishing around for something before finally pulling out a napkin triumphantly. "I got the idea at the dance. When you went to go get drinks." Alucard took the napkin in his hand, holding in firmly against the wind. It was a simple drawing, done with a normal black pen. It showed to interlinking spirals, like tails
Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 13Pip sat in a dark corner, hat pulled low to hide his face. Seras and Alucard had never left the dance floor save that one time, dancing to every song that came on. Most of them were upbeat, quick. Right now, however, a slow dance song was playing, and she was leaning into him, her head resting on his chest, eyes closed. It appeared as if he was saying something, murmuring into her ear.Hellsing - Hopeless Pt. 133 years ago in Short Stories More Like This
The mercenary cracked a smile, watching them. One of the others he was with was watching the pair too, but not nearly as laid-back.
"Captain, are you sure we should be here?" the soldier asked apprehensively. Pip snorted.
"Why not? It's a free country, isn't it?" he asked.
"But are you sure they won't notice? If the police girl catches you spying on her here-" he didn't get to finish his sentence, for Pip had stood at the mention of Seras. He glared down at the soldier, who immediately looked down at his feet, nervous.
"Her name," Pip growled, "is Seras." The soldier mumbled a quick "yes sir" before fall

"I need to talk to you...about Sir Integra." At the tone of the vampire's voice as he mentioned the leader's name, the butler's face darkened, confusion and worry creasing it.
"Have you been noticing anything...different?" The old man contemplated, trying to think of something.
"She has been a bit more on edge lately. I assumed it had something to do with the recent discovery of Mr. James Fletcher, although to be honest I didn't expect her to be quite so run down about it." Alucard shook his head, face hard.
"It's not that."
"How do you know?"
"I...did you see her last night?" Now the human shook his head.
"No, actually. I went in to see if she needed anything close to three but she wasn't there."
"She would have already gone to bed by then, I talked to her at two thirty."
"You talked to her? Weren't you gone all night?"
"She contacted me." Walter's eyes widened in surprise.
"That's why I'm worried. She sounded desperate, she said she needed some
